Tom Ford's "A Single Man" becomes first gay Oscar bait of the season

In what is great news for gay-themed films, Tom Ford's directorial debut A Single Man has been picked up by distributors The Weinstein Company for a major awards-season push:
A Single Man, which takes place in the 1960s and stars Firth as a gay British college professor attempting to cope with the death of his partner, seemed like the kind of film that could give a distributor a chance to enter the upcoming Oscar race, as critically acclaimed performances by Firth and co-star Julianne Moore are being called Oscar bait. The Weinsteins, of course, are famous for their awards maneuvering, so Single could be a good match. TWC plans to release the pic in a limited run to qualify it for the Academy Awards. Pic will then go out wider in early 2010.

The film already has a growing list of accolades, including winning the Queer Lion at the Venice Film Festival (which also honored star Firth as Best Actor), so hopefully this is just the beginning of another Milk-style run for a gay-themed film at the Oscars.

The purchase of A Single Man for a seven figure deal, marks the first pick-up for an indie film at the Toronto festival and its sale and ensuing buzz is drawing comparison's to last year's sale of The Wrestler which  went on to earn and impressive $32 million dollars and two Oscar nominations.

And in case you missed it, here is the first trailer for the movie.

"TWC plans to release the pic in a limited run to qualify it for the Academy Awards..."

does every film have to have a limited run to qualify for the Academy Awards? and if so, why?

    dsc's picture

No but every film must be released prior to Dec 31 in order to

be considered thus the need for a limited run.

    Artsy-Indie

A fillum has to qualify in the year it is entered; artsy-Indie fillums don't mix well with the holiday blockbusters normally scheduled for the end of the year.  That's why you see so many fillums at this time, but ONLY in Los Angeles and New York, and maybe San Francisco for A Single Man.  I bet we get it here in Palm Springs for our January Fillum Fest.

Then they are released in the winter doldrums, trying to find an audience in the snow (or sunscreen in our case) to build an Oscar campaign on.

BTW Liz, as an Icon of Hollywood, you should know this fact!  And do you remember that time we spent together in Puero Vallarta while Richard was sick?

you should know that i was getting married..again...and again...and again. it's hard to check facts when you're constantly getting new wedding dresses and husbands. As for that time we spent together....did we elope by any chance? I've gotten so old, i can't remember exactly who i married. ;-)

    Academy Rules

Academy rules state that a film must be released in Los Angeles by December 31 and play for one week. This is the idea behind "limited" releases: studios release films not considered to be as "commercial" as your latest Will Smith or comic book movie in LA and NY (because so many film people are also based in NY) in late December in order to qualify for the Oscars, then "platform" the film into subsequent cities (Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, etc.) if the flick gets critical praise and what are known as "pre-cursor" awards (NY Film Critics Awards, LA Film Critics Awards, SAG Awards, Golden Globes, etc.), then go wide once the Oscar nominations are announced.

If you want to under financially why

this is a smart move, you should look at the roll out for Brokeback Mountain:

     http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/2005/BRKMT.php

Scroll down on the page to look at the growth in revenue over time for Brokeback. It mirrors the award season. Indeed, an Oscar nominated movie makes more money before the Oscar winners are announced is what they claim.

Brokeback was a limited release film, and as the Award season and word of mouth buzz grew, so did the movies. The Weinstein's perfected this approach for marketing an indiewood (not truly indie, but a Hollywood and independent hybrid) at Miramax. Thus, they are a really good sign for the movie.

So, the process favors giving small indiewood or indie films a chance of obtaining the box off that will convince exhibitors to keep the film in the theatre versus Spiderman 27.

    It looks really good!

I have been looking forward to this movie since AfterElton first wrote about it several months ago. I liked Nicholas Hoult in Skins, he stood out from the cast. A film with Julianne Moore, Colin Firth and Nicholas Hoult really can't go wrong. The cinematography looks excellent too. It's more like an artsy-indie film though, so I don't know if it will be hugely popular in the box office, but I still think it will create a lot of Oscar buzz. Hopefully maybe even win one eventually!

Anyways, I can't wait to see it. I probably have to wait a while, since I live in Europe..

    It's so weird

Dev Patel stars in this year's Oscar runaway, Slumdog Millionaire, and now Nicholas Hoult is in a movie that's attracting an Oscar buzz. If this keeps up, Skins series one will become an Oscar touchstone.

Yes, you did!  I saw him

Yes, you did!  I saw him flash by, too, so went and looked it up at imdb.com.  He's listed.

I wonder if this will ever play in Oklahoma.  I'm not going to hold my breath!

The Weinsteins are wise to play it up this way

Colin Firth's a shoo-in for a Best Actor Oscar nomination -- and very likely the award itself from what I can tell. It has all the markings of a "prestige" item which means that audiences not drawn to films with gay content are simply going to have to see it.

    Matthew Goode...

I am totally looking forward to this movie! (Lee Pace, YAY!) Thanks for letting me know about it. This is why I try to visit this website every day or so... But I am not commenting just to say that. I must admit, I more so have a mini-rant in mind.

In your previous post, "Tom Ford's "A Single Man" wins Queer Lion...." you mention that Matthew Goode is from "Brideshead Revisited." Which, yes, he is.. but I was just wondering why you didn't also include "Watchmen." I ask this not only because Goode did a wonderful job in his part, but the movie version of Adrian Veidt was clearly gay, not to mention a rare display of a rather complicated and oddly flattering - to some, although a opinion like that is always up to debate - gay man at that.

Is it the whole stigma of 'gay men are always the villain' thing going on? Because I really don't think that was ever the case with him. He's not a villian, just a logical thinker, though somewhat cold, which is often times what the world needs at its most dire hour.

I just don't think the movie version of Adrian Veidt has gotten as much credit from this website as he deserves. Or the comic book Veidt either, as the first time I read it, I read it under the immediate assumption that he was gay and that was long before the film...

Mostly, I was just curious...Lend me some light on the issue?

Edit - I just did some more searching and found two articles containing hints to Ozy's sexuality, but I am still curious about why Watchmen wasn't mentioned with Brideshead. Just general inquisitiveness, don't mind the rant. Thanks, and sorry for taking up your time!

    I'm pretty sure...

This will come out on Christmas Day,getting it into theatres just in for Oscar consideration. Here,in the L.A. market,it will(mostly likey) play @ the Landmark 12 in West L.A. or Arclight Hollywood. The box office performance of the movie,in addition to awards show buzz, will play a deciding factor into how wide it will go nationally. In a year with not that many great leading performances by actors,so far,Colin Firth should be a lock for Best actor at both the Golden Globes and the Oscars.

The real question is whether or not Tom Ford(who has been an actor, model, clothing designer, etc.)can be taken seriously as a director.

Either way,i need to see this movie!

    David Ehrenstein's picture

I'm sure it will be well before that

There are plenty of people to do publicit y for it: Firth, Moore, and most important of all Tom Ford himself. You don't roll a spread like that out at the last minute.

I expect it'll be released late October or early November.

    but??????

Can'wait to see this movie BUT have it released in Asia countries?

    As Yet...

No overseas deals(except for the Weinstein deal, which,i believe, includes all German rights in addition to the US rights) have been announced.

On a somewhat related note(i.e.,TWC)I think i read somewhere the The Weinstein Company(which currently has cable deals in place with Starz and Showtime(selected titles released by MGM)recently signed a deal with the new Epix movie channel that is supposed to start next month(on Verizon FIOS only, for now)

Epix is the channel that Paramount,MGM and LionsGate started because they wanted out of thier Showtime deals that expire soon anyway. This means that, unless a miracle occurs and more cable & the satellite companies(both of which have said "No" to the channel)come on board,no "Star Trek",no Chris Pine/Zachary Quinto to ogle over.

    Whaaaaaa!?

That trailer was confusing. He's gay, he's straight. Theres a little girl. A gun. A guy floating underwater. It's all pretty stunning and artistically well-done, but if I were to see this trailer in a theater I would have no idea what the hell was going on. Just me? Not passing judgement on the film. I have high hopes for it in fact as I love Julianne Moore and Nick Hoult, but that trailer would be confusing if you didn't know about the films plot.

    Teaser

It's a teaser trailer, Morgan. It is supposed to seduce you like a handsome stranger  across the room... visual stimulation with an overwhelming sense of mystery that makes you want to see more than you can at the moment. Think of this as the kiss before you take him home.

Now a days they give you a trailer that tells all and you have no surprise or are just annoyed.
