"Hollyoaks" spoilerage: How would you end the Kieron storyline?
Fans of Hollyoaks have no doubt heard that TPTB have decided the fate of Kieron, the former priest and fiance of John Paul. You can read the MAJOR SPOILERS after the break, which are sure to provoke weeks of debate until the scenes air in early September (which is probably what the producers were hoping for, in releasing the info so early). We'd also like your thoughts on how you would end (or if you would end) the Kieron/J.P. storyline, so take the jump and let us know if you think the producers are doing the right thing. Again, there are MAJOR SPOILERS after the break!
According to the Hollyoaks website, Kieron will exit the show thanks to a murderous act by the increasingly loony Niall:
"Recently Kieron has been acting as Myra's confidante and trying to find the long lost son she left on the church steps when she was just fourteen. Kieron thinks he has hit the jackpot when he finds the woman who claims to be the adoptive mother of Myra's son. Events take a fatal twist however when Kieron discovers that his friend Niall is in fact Myra's son!" "A shocked Kieron realises he has to confront Niall and tell Myra, but Niall had other ideas. Furious he has been discovered, Niall suggests he and Kieron share a beer together to talk things over, but evil Niall laces Kieron's drink with a deadly dose of drugs..." "Kieron is horrified as Niall reveals all of the wicked actions he has taken since he arrived in HOLLYOAKS. But having heard Niall's confession, it's too late for Kieron, who has already consumed the deadly drink. Kieron's lover John Paul arrives to see Kieron taking his last breath and is left to assume that he has taken his own life!"
There are two ways to look at this. Hollyoaks is a soap opera, and as far as dramas go, this exit is classic. I'd put it up there with Rosalind getting the (elevator) shaft on L.A. Law, or Kimberley blowing up herself on Melrose Place (but it doesn't quite reach the insane high of the "Moldavian Massacre"). My point ... is that this sets up a lot of juicy drama for J.P. and the rest of the cast as Niall's plot starts to unravel. On the other hand, it's disappointing that Kieron's departure is being used as just another plot point for the Niall storyline. After getting to know the goodhearted Kieron, and really caring about his relationship with J.P., to have him leave in this way - drinking poisoned beer! - leaves a bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended). I suppose it you think of Niall as the evil stepbrother and Kieron as Snow White, then poisoned beer does make a perverse kind of sense, but still, what a way to go!
We'd like to know how you would end the Kieron storyline. Are the producers doing the right thing, or would you do it differently? Take the poll below and let us know!

I think it usually would
I think it usually would be a good soap ending. As dramatic as one could wish.
It's more the story leading up to the ending that leaves much to be desired. Lots of potential not much of it used.
I'm not sure though how JP or any of the others will honestly be able to believe that Kieron killed himself. If it's going to be the usual amnesia that accompanies Niall wherever he goes than I'll be more than annoyed.
Other than that I suspect that there are some sadists in the Hollyoaks writing departement who invented this ending just to see how far they can drive the feud between the two "ships". Maybe someone is doing a study about soap-fans at the moment ;-)
btw. snicks -are you going to post the little conversation between Myra and Kieron? it doesn't do much for the whole story but was some more nice character-study. I actually understand where Myra's coming from now.
I think you're right
LOL. I bet that's what it is. Up until now, I've managed to avoid all the ship wars, so I'm a little amazed at the vitriol on both side of this one.
A Waste of Character
I agree with you
You know...
I have no problem with his going, even though I think he's great. And even when I read the spoilers that he was getting killed off I was like, "eh, it's a soap, and he's really there to move along the regular characters' plots anyway".
But then I saw those pics, and I no likey.
I no likey one bit.
It makes no sense
Those pictures are disturbing; the vomit on the carpet really isn't needed, but they do drive home the point that this is being done for shock value in an attempt to drive up ratings. There's no other reason that the pictures and spoilers are being released a month before these events will play out on screen.
The sad part is that it all seems rather pointless, since not only will Kieron die, but this ruins the possibility of Craig and John Paul leaving as a romantic couple. James Sutton is scheduled to leave just three weeks after Kieron dies, so how can the writers write a believable sunset ending for John Paul and Craig. Pretty much every scene will be, or at least should be, John Paul coming to terms with what happened to Kieron, so when will John Paul and Craig have time to sort out their problems and renew they relationship. And who would believe that the character of John Paul, who has been shown to have a heart, would start up in a relationship so soon after the death of the man he loves.
Agreed
kieron exit alternate version
okay... you wanted the perfect ending for Kieron and I'm going to tell you one.
I would like to sincerely excuse myself for some of the following fangirling in advance. It's not contagious, so don't worry.
So just to make clear where I'm coming from:
I haven't been so completely knocked out of my
knickersshoes by an actor/character-combination since Richard Armitage as John Thornton and before him Ciarán Hinds as Captain Wentworth. Given that they are also tall, dark-haired with impressive noses and gorgeous voices I started to detect a pattern. (No comments please on how it comes that the older I get the younger the fancied actors become, I don't even want to start thinking about it)I was even tempted to include the firth/darcy combination but I guess one has to draw the line somewhere and the thing with the large nose wouldn't have worked out.
So - similarities detected in the actors (please no discussion about acting skills or merrits here - would be unfair to young Mr Hendriks) - what about the characters? How dare I to compare two iconic fictional characters who have swept women of their feet for almost two centuries with one rather poorly written gay soap-priest? Well, because I can ;) and because there are similarities like brooding, gentle, restricted, honest, reliable, even authoritative (not what I mean exactly but don't know another word) behaviour.
But of course there's one crucial thing lacking and that's:
exactly: sideburns!
So anyone who has ever read anything by Diana Gabaldon (don't! ) would know what to do. Bring dying Kieron to the next stone circle - put him in there and he will wake up alive, well and sound in around 1808.
Then let him grow some nice sideburns (Jake Hendriks would be delighted he has already said he would like to do some nice period drama) and add either some cute little valet or some nice girl with a bonnett - everyone according to their own taste - and let them go on having adventures or let him aquire a new parish (they loved vicars back then) or anything you want him to ;-)
Love those actors
Lily - I love those two actors, so "thank you" for making mention of them. I'm not sure if you're watching the 2008 Olympics, but the US swim team has an Olympian, who looks like a blonde version of Jake Hendriks.

No full-body shot/photo of Matt, but he's 6'8" tall.
So just to make clear where I'm coming from:

Yes, the nose is
Yes, Matt's nose is more "streamlined" than *our* Jake's, but he just really reminds me of him.
hm - maybe
better - but I'm still not convinced ;) He looks more like Prince William on those pics
we're getting slightly off-topic here - but something in those pictures makes me think the guys won't mind too much
none of the above
I've been thinking since Kieron was introduced that he should leave the Catholic church and become an Anglican priest. I mean, they are in England, and the transition between one and the other (in either direction) isn't unheard of. He could have to go back to seminary for some doctrinal training, or simply be assigned to a new CoE parish, and JP could go with him as, you know, his fiance. It leaves it open for JP and Keiron to come back and visit every once and a while, and gives them a complex, realistic, but still happy ending.
This poison mishegas is just stupid. (Like anyone poisons people anymore!)
I thought the Anglicans...
I thought the CoE was still singing the "Gay priests are okay but must be celibate" line, especially after the ugly ruckus the Africans have been raising lately? There's no shortage of gay Episcopal priests with partners in the U.S. (indeed, that's what triggered the uproar), but I am unsure how this is working out in England.
This is not to say it's not a hot idea. As it is I'm prone to having inappropriate fantasies about our church's priest.
Yep
The English Anglican Church is currently on the side of it being a sin. A couple of years ago there was a big issue over an openly gay bishop being appointed in the Oxford diocese. He ended up choosing to resign after a whole lot of outrage, and then there was some further outrage over this resignation from within the church. But hey, Scotland says it is fine and Ireland is coming around, so I reckon England will be next.
On the note of Kieron's departure, as annoyed as I am about him not ending up with J.P and dying, I really hate that J.P has to believe it is a suicide. If it doesn't get cleared up, I'm not going to be happy. Honestly, how long has Niall been rampaging around being evil? Is he ever going to be caught?
I don't mind the story
I don't mind the story itself - it actually sounds like it could be a lot of fun if done well. I do think they're wasting Keiron, though. With JP, Craig and Keiron all gone, the only queer presence will be Kris, and they've never really known what to do with him. Keiron would have been a good addition to the cast, long term.
But if it were me... and I *had* to get rid of him... heh heh heh. I'd go totally evil. Get Niall to seduce Keiron away from JP first, in order to both break his brother's heart and get info on Myra, then kill him in some really over-the-top way - like give him a drug that would drive him crazy and convince him that Myra was really a demon, so Keiron would try to kill her, but be thwarted by Mercedes or even Niall himself. The more byzantine and improbable, the better. This is a soap, after all [grin].
A different kind of SE
What a waste of character development, wonderful talent and beautiful manflesh! I got hooked on this storyline bec of Kieron and I couldn't get enough of it.
You know what, they're killing him off, fine. They're making JP and Craig get back together, fine. But please don't use Keiron as just a route to getting JP and Craig together or a part of Niall's storyline. That's such a waste!
How I would like it to end given we know the spoilers already? Ok, JP and Kieron break up bec JP got the jitters. He sees Craig and they get it on. While they're doing the nasty, Kieron is dying. See the cell on K's hand? That's Niall texting JP as K, "If you still love me, come see me at Niall's." JP realizes he still does and rushes back to Niall's to find K dead. He cries and cries and cries. After K dies, C will be there for him. In the end, he'll show how much he loves JP by being there to heal JP's heartbreak that was caused by another man. Whatever happens afterwards, whether they fall in love or stay friends, I don't care. And that's their SE. Tah!
Hollyoaks Rocks
Because this soap does NOT shy away from drama. In my opinion Kieron ( who I adore by the way) was always going to die- he was the device by which Niall and the McQueens would have their epic clash..later down the line I presume. Reading Jake Hendrick's interviews, it seems the producers and writers were always going to go down this route.
I am upset that Kieron's going to die but the drama will keep me glued to my screen. I love Craig as well and I'm curious to see how his relationship with JP will play out after the murder.
I think Hollyoaks got it right. I know a few people who are Kieron fans are gutted and some on forums positively hysterical with grief :) but IMO this storyline alone will boost ratings for HO. At the end of the day, Brian Kirkwood ( the producer) is one happy man and I'm one happy viewer.
Bad, Bad ending
Does anyone think JP will
Too much
The producers really should not have released such detailed spoilers. There's really no point now for Kieron fans (like me) because what is the point in watching? Seeking the ghastly details of how my beloved Father Freakon bites the dust? Ew.
And as others have said, will JP really start up with Craig, who I hope by now realizes he is gay and not just JPsexual, so soon after his fiance's death? That's completely out of character for JP. How in the world could the SE that McDean fans have been getting themselves wet over happen under these circumstances? Is JP that much of an insensitive bastard? I guess the writers are or could be, but still...
Surely Jake Hendriks could have stayed on and maybe he and that Kris character could have become a couple. Or he could have gotten involved with another student. Or we could have actually gotten to know more about Kieron and who he was pre-Hollyoaks and pre-JP -- his family, his upbringing etc. Kieron is very much like Noah Mayer in this aspect; while Kieron has a little bit of life and airtime outside of JP, at the end of the day, which is coming soon, Kieron, we hardly knew ye.
holy moly
WHYYYYYYYYY
So I didn't know that it was a really detailed spoiler. Why does he have to die?!?!?!
Craig chose what he wanted to do! They should've left it at that. Seems like everybody's dying on hollyoaks. Either dead, injured, or physically abused. Great formula for succesful ratings, I guess? As other peeps have said, so much time on character deelopment's going down the drain. Like seriously, maybe the prods thought that people wouldn't be glued enough if they see K and JP happily married and such.
Team Kieron FTMFW!
