Ten gorgeous reasons to love tennis

It happens every year at this time. From the end of May til the middle of September, everything else becomes meaningless, and my entire being is focused on one thing - tennis.

What is it about tennis that makes it arguably the most popular spectator sport for gay men? I don't have any statistics to back that up, but from personal experience, most of the gay men I've known (even the ones who generally detest watching sports) follow tennis. For me, I think it comes down to the personalities and the drama.

There was Martina Navratilova, who took the harassment and scorn of homophobia and triumphantly turned it around, becoming a legend and one of the greatest gay icons of all time. Monica Seles (my all time favorite), who brought power to the women's game, who was well on her way to becoming the all time best, then watched it all disappear in one of the most horrific moments in sports history. The Williams Sisters, who brought much needed diversity to the sport, and the sexpot campiness of Anna Kournikova and Maria Sharapova.

On the men's side, there's an added appeal for gay fans. In addition to the personalities and drama, tennis has the hottest men of any sport. There have been plenty of hot tennis guys in the past, like Patrick Rafter, Mark Philippoussis, and Bjorn Borg. Here are ten active players to add to the list, and if you weren't a fan before, maybe this will help convince you.

Andy Roddick - USA

I have to admit, Andy Roddick is not my favorite player (he can be very obnoxious at times), but I also have to admit that he's still the sport's reigning male pin-up. I also think he's so much hotter with a little meat on his bones.

Robby Ginepri - USA

Robby Ginepri (aka "my mountain man") is not as well known as his fellow Americans Andy Roddick and James Blake, but he's every bit as hot.

See more tennis hotties, and a clip of a big Russian in his underwear, after the break.

Tommy Haas - Germany

Tommy Haas is over 30 now, but his good looks are ageless.

Janko Tipsarevic - Serbia

Janko Tipsarevic is my favorite new player, and the only Serbian player I like. He's best known for taking King Federer to five sets at the Australian Open.

James Blake - USA

Sweet baby James Blake has had to endure a lot over the years. That gorgeous smile and sexy bald head make me melt.

Novak Djokovic - Serbia

I'm including Novak Djokovic because he's tennis's new "IT" boy. He won the Australian Open, and has talked a lot of trash, especially about King Fed. Personally, he gets on my nerves, but I can't deny that he strikes an imposing figure.

Arnaud Clement - France

Let's hear it for the sexy little guys! Arnaud Clement may be one of the most diminutive player on the tour, but what he lacks in size, he makes up for in hotness.

Roger Federer - Switzerland

Roger Federer is the greatest player of all time, not to mention one of the hottest. What else needs to be said?

Rafael Nadal - Spain

I'm torn when it comes to Rafael Nadal. On tennis messageboards, I refer to him as either "Evil Rafa" or "The butt picking wedgie boy" (for his constant adjusting of the underwear around his bubble butt). I've never warmed to him because he has the nerve to thrash my Roger on clay, but I can't deny the fact that he is an awesome specimen.

Marat Safin - Russia

Temperamental Russian Marat Safin has been known by many nicknames, "Ivan Drago", and "the horniest horndog who's ever played the game" (he used to show up at tournaments with at least two or three blonde bimbos with him). He's not the player he used to be, but he's just as hot. You can see a clip of Marat below, when he was in his prime

    My favourite

To me the most handsome tennis player is the almost newcomer italian Simone Bolelli

Rafa needs to learn some manners

The butt-picking thing is an irritant, but I'm surprised no one has ever called him on his grunts.  How can his opponents concentrate?  I've wondered if it might be his way of psyching them out.  And what's with those pedal pushers?  I believe they're called capris now, but I'll always think of them as pedal pushers.  Be that as it may, he looks extra-fine here.  No wonder Roger seems to have a soft spot for him.

    I don't think

there's nothing wrong with Rafa's grunts, he is a lot less noise than Sharapova. I don't like his fists or his contantly vamos, but the truth is that he is a nice and humble guy, and do't do this to offend his rival (like Hewitt for example)

Roger has a great problem with Rafa, because Nadal's game suits exactly to make trouble to Roger's game, and Nadal is one of the most strongest physically and mentally of the circuit

By the way i don't find Rafa attractive at all, i hate his hair, and he is a nice guy but he is not exactly an intellectual (well in some sports being intelligent is not seeing like a gift)

    Grunts

Yeah, they're pedal-pushers to me, too, and I'm not very fond of them.  The grunts don't bother me, though.  If you want REAL grunting, go back to Monica Seles.  Her grunts were very loud, and often ended with a shriek.  Very annoying, even over the TV.  I wonder if it was worse in person.  There was some talk that she did that partially on purpose to throw off opponents, but I doubt it.

    Oh Rafa...

Didn't one of the guys Rafael was playing last year make fun of him? They were playing a match and when it came time for his oppnent to serve he pretended to be Rafael. I don't remember the guys name, but I remember hearing and watching clips about it.

    Djokovic

Probably Djokovic, he use to imitate other players

It was at last years Wimbledon

and it was Robin Soderling.  That was the match that lasted five days because of horrible weather.  Tennis is my co-favorite sport along with football.  I have to admit that I'm more of a women's tennis fan, but that was because I really enjoyed watching Justine Henin play.  Now that she's retired(hopefully not for good), I just watch tennis for the sake of it.   Speaking of hot guys playing tennis, you forgot Richard Gasquet, he's extremely good looking.

    Tennis Players & their rituals

If you are a serious tennis player or fan, you already know grunting is very normal and not really used to psych out opponents.  Each tennis player has their own ritual, some superstitious such as Djokovic's ball bouncing.  Rafael Nadal is actually very polite and humble.  His results are amazing.  His shotmaking, not his grunting is what intimidates.

Anyway, the hot list should definitely include:

Richard Gasquet, Mario Ancic, Tommy Robredo & Fabio Fognini

you could actually add tons of names!

tennis really does have the hottest guys of any sport. And because it's a singular sport, and not a team sport, it's easier to get to know their personalities.

Oh..and i really can't say anything about grunting, considering my all time favorite player is...Monica

    Sorry to disagree, but...

I am a serious tennis fan, and grunting is not normal.  Monica Seles used to bug me too.  I have seen Rafa interviewed, and I've heard him talk about his supportive family.  I am very fond of the guy.  I just want him to quit with the grunts!

    Honorable Mentions

Jo-Wilifred Tsonga, David Nalbandian, Fernando "Gonzo" Gonzalez (huge thighs...sigh).

I will always have fond memories of Pete Sampras in his prime. Since he is no longer playing Roger Federer has taken his place in my heart.

    Good choices!

Ginepri, Safin, Djokovic, Haas, and Tipsarevic are all yummy.  And I wouldn't kick Roddick or Clement out of bed.  Unfortunately, a couple of these guys have already knocked a couple of the other guys out at Wimbledon as Safin took out Djokovic and Tipsarevic knocked off Roddick.  Other favorites of mine include Dmitry Tursunov, Richard Gasquet and Tommy Robredo.

When it comes to the actual game of tennis, I prefer to watch the women, although I'm not a big fan of all the players that just try to knock the cover off the ball now.  I am seriously mourning the loss of Henin, who had a beautiful game.  With Mauresmo seemingly on her way out and Hingis having retired again, women with games that are worth watching seem to be an endangered species.  I fell in love with tennis watching Martina Navratilova win her final Wimbledon title, so the women's game will always have a special place in my heart.

As for the grunting, I think the title for the loudest may have to go to Sharapova.  She is the only player I know that ever had a complaint from a player on a different court.  She seems to have toned it down a bit, but she used to shriek like a banshee!

    Based purely on

Based purely on looks...Ginepri, Hass and Tipsarevic are all gorgeous guys; and when Pete Sampras was playing, he was tops on my list.

As great a player as Nadal his...I find him quite unattractive. He doesn't appeal to me at all. And Andy Roddick does nothing for me. I also find Roddick very cocky and normally root for the other guy to win whenever he's playing.

    How large is Andy Roddick's...

...birthmark? (What, you thought I was asking about something else?) I've only seen it from the front, never the side or back, and it appears quite sizable. I think it's really cool of him that he doesn't hide it.
