The closet door swings open again on "The Howard Stern Show"

Mike Morales, Howard Stern

Shock jock Howard Stern is infamous for his own brand of lowbrow entertainment, but he's also become a surprisingly strong gay supporter.

He helped George Takei begin his late-in-life career as everyone's favorite eccentric gay uncle, even throwing him a bachelor party (in typical Stern fashion), and George's many appearances on the Stern show are always fun and occasionally enlightening.

Last year, Stern regular Joey Boots came out on the air, and while jokes were made, Howard told him it was a "heroic thing to do."

The closet door has swung open again, as Stern news producer (and on-air regular) "High Pitch" Mike Morales has publicly come out on the show:

Howard told Mike he was very brave ("I'm very proud of you and happy for you.") and asked if Mike had ever been with any guys. Mike said he had: "My mom will listen to this...I don't want to get too explicit." Mike said he first knew he was gay in sixth grade and didn't act on his desires until college: "I haven't been dating actively." Howard asked if Mike felt different, and Mike said he just hoped his coming out could help other people.

There will no doubt be jokes made at his expense in the future (it wouldn't be The Howard Stern Show without them), but it's obvious that Mike has a lot of support from Howard:

Howard then predicted that Mike's voice would eventually become lower, as high-pitched voices are usually the result of stress – and Mike has freed himself from its grasp. Mike welcomed the idea: "I hope you're right."

For someone who's made a career out of lewdness, crudeness, and shock, who would have thought Howard Stern would turn out out be such a gay ally?

    Shock Jock Support

Hey this is such GREAT news! I really don't know much about the man, but used to listen to Howard's moring show a lot, and always had a sneaky suspicion that he was a good guy under it all. Thanks for the scoop! :)

    Go Howard!

I just listened to this segment on youtube and it was actually really touching. I actually teared up a couple times. It would get really intense and Howard would break the tension with a little joke but he was incredibly supportive and sensitive to Mike.

I've always liked Howard and this makes me like him even more.

    Howard is very pro-gay

Nothing is off limits as far as his humor goes, but Howard is very pro-gay. When Brokeback came out he urged all his listeners to go see it. He's had gay dating games on his show. He's supportive of gay marriage. One of his best interviews recently was with Neil Patrick Harris. He's very supportive of OutQ on Sirius. He's often spoke out against hate crimes.

It's easy for ppl to hear one gay joke and label him anti-gay...but to listen tot he show and hear him when the jokes are laid aside shows his true character.

Lewdness, crudeness and shock - II

Chi Chi LaRue with a microphone and snootful of Jägermeister would make Stern look like a choir boy.

Lewdness, crudeness, and shock A CLARIFICATION

My point was that the kind of lewdness, crudeness, and shock that Stern made famous usually doesn't include anything gay positive. Not all lewdness and crudeness is created equal.

    Howard Stern

Like a lot of people, I lost track of Howard Stern when he went satellite, and I was never a regular listener, but I always kind of liked him.  Yeah, sometimes he went a little further than I was comfortable with and I tuned out, but on the whole I "got" his schtick, which was just to say whatever came into his head without any self-censorship.  Yeah, his mind is sometimes a little too gross (but then, so's mine), but he's also not Don Imus.

I've liked him pretty much since I saw Private Parts, where he came across as quite likeable while being fairly honest about his flaws.  This news doesn't really surprise me at all.
