TiVo in bed with Focus on the Family? Delete, please!
From Jeremy at Good As You comes a disturbing report about the relationship between Tivo and the rabidly anti-gay Focus on the Family. Both Tivo and FOF are sponsoring a father's day contest, and as Jeremy points out, the fact that FOF works diligently to deny gay fathers the same rights as straight fathers makes this whole "contest" pretty sickening. The thing is, it's not the first time that Tivo has aligned itself with James Dobson's group. Last year, they teamed up to start a service to help decide what broadcast imagery is appropriate for kids: "Focus on the Family is teaming with TiVo, the maker of the popular digital video recorder, to protect children from harmful television programming. The ministry is dedicated to meeting the needs of parents, and that includes helping them make wise media choices." Hmm ... a quick glance at the stuff I have recorded makes me wish they had consulted me, because it would make their heads explode. The terrific romance Shelter, from HERETV. Shortbus, which I recorded from Sundance Channel The "proposal" episode of Brothers & Sisters (yes, i still have it) Four episodes of Sexy Urban Legends from Playboy TV, as well as almost an entire season of 7 Lives Exposed (a soft core Real World). The David Decoteau epic Beastly Boyz My five favorite episodes of The Golden Girls (including the two with Nancy Walker playing Sophia's sister). The last one they might not have too much of a problem with, although it is about women living together, so they might think it's like The L Word. What I'm interested to know is what goodies all of you have recorded that would cause the folks at FOF to run screaming from the room, and does finding out this kind of info about a product you own change how you think about it? Would it cause you to stop using it? Submitted by on Mon, 2008-06-09 12:53. |

Hmm...
I would think that the combination of America's Psychic Challenge (clearly paganistic), Yo Gabba Gabba (clearly acid-induced), The Boys in the Band (when it mercifully aired last year) and every "gay episode" of any television show since 2006 would be enough for them to send someone to exorcise my set.
And I never thought I'd say this, but thank heaven for Time Warner Cable DVR. TiVo can suck it!
I have the same thing!
The Time Warner DVR, that is...not your choices

FOF not posting submissions on Gay Dads!
I know--Shocking, right??? Well, my 8 year old tried entering me in the contest on Thursday. As yet, they haven't posted it. I contacted Family Equality Council and Jennifer Chrisler said that others are having the same experience. Although at least 30 families have cc'd FEC on their entries, none have been posted by FOF. Clearly discriminatory... Imagine a group promoting family hurting my son's feelings, just because our family doesn't look the way they want it to... Appalling.
True
To make a point, I wrote an essay about my Dad (Vickie), who's courage in the face of trans-hate has inspired me. . .but I believe they're automatronically regected/deleted if the word Gay or Transexual comes up in the text. Much the same as when they re-routed links from gay websites to unrelated pages . .ie: a survey then that sends you to another site for "ex-gay enthusiasts".
But then, my Grandson had the same problem . . .probably because he used the word Gay in his entry talking about his Grandpa (Me, his Dad is Straight).
Kind of embarrassing
I cleared a whole lot of material off my tivo recently (including some gay material) so I don't have much left of interest on there, for this list. Let's see... There's the NewNowNext Awards, an episode of the Click List: Best in Short Film, and---um... Okay, the most embarrassing thing I have recorded is an episode of the documentary series "Pornucopia" titled "Same-sex Sex." (A short history of gay porn from the silent days to the present.) There really is nothing particularly edifying about this show! I, uh, just haven't gotten around to deleting it yet...
I would think another way of protesting tivo's Focus on the Family connection would be to record as much gay programming as you possibly could on their machines, rather than getting rid of the system entirely....
I'm like a superhero, with no powers or motivation...
Hmm
I know this probably more of an insult to the designer than FOF. But am I the only one who think's the Dad looks like a dildo?

Samantha Jones ...
I have Dish DVR, so I don't
I have Dish DVR, so I don't have LOGO, or almost any other program with gay inclusive content that's not mind numbing. Then again, on Thursday, my DVR lights will once again be turning rainbow
TIVO can suck it!
