"Ugly Betty" (3.04) recaplet: Betty Suarez Land

There were a lot of developments on this week's Ugly Betty, as we may have seen the last of a number of cast members. Find out who's staying and who's going after the break!

We start off with Suzuki St. Pierre (Alec Mapa) making one of his "Fashion TV" reports (aka helpful exposition) about Alexis being arrested for pushing Christina down the steps.

Daniel arrives at the jail to speak to Alexis, who tells him "You're not Rafa Jr's father...I am", which causes Daniel to channel Elliot Stabler and launch across the interrogation table to get at her.

Betty walks off the elevator at Mode to see a blast from last season, Gio! For some reason, she thinks he'll be happy to see her (Betty is a smart girl, but sometimes....) and is shocked when he says how upset he still is that she dumped him and he had to go on a romantic trip to Italy by himself. He goes on and on about finding some special "cheese", and frankly, he was starting to creep me out a little, when he lets Betty know that he had an epiphany...he hates her.

In the history of unfortunate product tie-ins, the "Showgirls Coloring Book" is near the top.

Betty is discussing Gio with Daniel, and she convinces him to try and find some of Gio's "special cheese", but Daniel is preoccupied with his son, who's now his nephew.

Wilhemina and Mark are livid that it looks like Alexis is only going to get a slap on the wrist for her crime, so they hatch a plan to keep that from happening (and they both are perfectly color coordinated today...in hideous shades of green. She looks like a lizard who's halfway through the molting process, and he looks like a big gay bullfrog).

Claire, Daniel, and Alexis are informed by their lawyer (played by Barry Bostwick, and I'm going to fight mightily not to make a Rocky Horror reference in this recap) that the charges have been upgraded to attempted murder. Claire says "I'm not putting the future of my daughter in the hands of twelve people who are too lazy or too stupid to get out of jury duty" (that reminds me...our own Associate Editor Brian had jury duty a few months ago...I wonder how that went?).

Anyway...Claire calls the district attorney to argue her case, but he says his hands are tied...literally, as we see Willie doing her best Dana Delaney in Exit to Eden, and is delivering some corporal punishment to the hot D.A. (who's played by Christian Hoff, the TONY winner from Jersey Boys). It's clear that Willie will be getting her way this time.

Hilda and Tony are having a picnic in Betty's apartment, and she's still upset with the whole "sneaking around cause you're married" thing, when he breaks the news that he's going to tell his wife about them that night. After he leaves, a woman comes out of the shadows to check the name on the apartment door. She almost knocks, but walks away instead, so she's either his wife, or a very timid Avon lady.

Later, the same woman shows up at Hilda's beauty shop, and asks her to tell her "sister" to stop seeing Tony. Hilda realizes that the wife doesn't know that the woman who's been having an affair with her husband is standing right in front of her, and is mortified when the wife reveals that she's still in love with her husband, and doesn't want to leave him

Daniel is informed that the grandparents are on their way from France to pick up Rafa Jr. (they found out that Daniel isn't his father, and were granted temporary custody). If they take him back to France, there's no way he can get custody, so he asks Betty to pick him up from school, and keep him occupied.

That works out well for Betty, who has received the "special cheese", and tricks Gio into coming over to her apartment. Gio wants to take the cheese and run, but Betty insists they work out their differences. Gio accuses her of living in "Betty Suarez Land", population, one. Their arguing is interrupted when someone rings Betty's buzzer. It's Rafa's grandparents, who found out that she's harboring him.

I gotta go. I'm doing the commentary on the director's cut DVD of "Megaforce"

After Betty, Rafa, and Gio make their escape, they head to Coney Island, where Daniel meets up with them later. He tells Betty that he needs to take Rafa out of the country, because the grandparents have a court order for him, and admits to Betty that he's not really the father. Unfortunately, his son/nepew overhears, and runs away.

Betty convinces Daniel that he needs to take a step back and decide if he really wants to become a fugitive, and he realizes that the best place for Rafa probably is with the grandparents. They eventually find the tyke under the boardwalk, down by the sea, and Daniel tells him that it's time to go back to France, but he'll always have a "cool uncle" looking out for him. SEE YA, RAFA!

Meanwhile, Willi and Mark arrive at the jail to talk to Alexis, and offer a deal. The charges will go away if she signs over her share of Meade Publishing. Alexis says she'd rather rot in prison than betray Daniel again, so Willi goes to Claire, who offers another deal. She'll convince Alexis to sign over half of her shares to Daniel, and half to Willi, and the two of them will have equal power in the company.

Can't I at least shower one more time?

Tony comes over to see Hilda, who has decided their relationship has to end. She can't handle knowing that she's responsible for breaking up a marriage, and tells him goodbye. As he leaves the house, I can't help but wonder how sad his nipples must be right now...they never even got to say goodbye to us. SEE YA, TONY!

Gio comes over to Betty's and she hands over his "special cheese" (which was like the Macguffin of this episode), and she admits that she was acting selfish, and is sorry she hurt him. They make amends, but then say their official goodbyes. SEE YA, GIO!

Claire and Daniel meet Alexis at the heliport, where she's about to leave for France. Daniel advises her to try and get to know Rafa if she gets a chance, and then they all have an emotional goodbye. SEE YA, ALEXIS!

The episode ends as it should, with Betty and her family, pulling together for Hilda.

Jeez..people come and go so quickly here! I'm pretty sure Rafa Jr. is gone for good, as well as Gio, but hopefully Alexis will be back after Rebecca Romijn squeezes out her little O'Connell. About Eddie Cibrian, I'm not sure. Hopefully he'll stick around.

I am glad that they're paring down the cast to the essential players, though. We need more of Marc and Amanda (who wasn't given anything to do in this episode except obsess over some Healthy Choice dinners), and Daniel and Willi competing for the company.

Let us know what you thought, and be sure and come back next week for the return of Lindsay Lohan, and Justin finally getting a story!

    Great recap snicks!

Two strong Ugly Betty episodes in a row. I agree with you about Amanda needing some face-time but she did look AMAZING in her whiny Kenley from PR meets Olivia from Xanadu retro office attire.

I loved evil Gio and wish that they would keep him around if only tangentially. I could have done without the Hilda doing the right thing and the Charlie-lookalike wife of the Eddie Cibrian character. I like my Hilda in her beauty shop talking smack.

I want more: Whilmenina (German for Guillermo btw ;-), Clair, Amanda and Marc together, all that is MODE, and campy crazy-soap elements. I really liked the Alec Mapa "exposition" (and drawings, esp. the shoes on Alexis) as well as yet another throwaway comment about Betty's appearance. Something about a hunchback....

I am glad that the kid is gone, bummed that Alexis is gone (but they did a nice job in sending her off (hopefully only for a while unless the show gets canned). I again realize that I enjoy this show the most when it's NOT about Betty. I'd not be too bummed if they got rid of Christina either.

I think that Gio's own over the top description of the Betty character is not so off-base. I wish that the show would be less deferential to Betty (maybe trying too hard to be PC with her?) and let her in on the fun as both the butt of the joke and also as someone having some fun, not learning/feeling/crying OR having ANYTHING to do with guests stars. A post-Mean Girls Lindsay Lohan? Not such a coup and her acting has been pretty wooden. I don't think that she's been helped by the scripts.

I am still rooting for the show to continue to get enough viewers so to keep going. With the across the board under-performance of ABC's Wednesday line-up, I would think that there is a good chance that Betty will still be around. Shake it up mamacita Suarez!!!

I agree that rafa Jr. will not be very missed. he didn't bring much to the table anyways, and with Alexis gone there wasn't anywhere his story could really go...besides Daniel becoming a father was jumping the shark.

Alexis' exit was shoddy at best. If Rebecca Romijn Lettuce wasn't with child, she would probably still be in the mix, but her exit was hasty and obvious...

"unless the show gets canned"....ooooh blasphemy....never lose faith in UB, this show cannot be cancelled...sure ratings may be down but we can get through this rough patch in the end...

And you may not like Betty-centric episodes, but she is sorta...idk...in the show's title...Betty is the show's moral compass and if anything Im glad they cut some of the riff raff....Betty needs to stop helping Daniel so much(when the F will he ever learn btw) and not have a freakin' love interest....she is the underdog character however they aren't showing as many obstacles or challenges for her...everything ends up nice and clean...therefore their is no big pay-off in the end....

but i love scenes with the family...and marc and willi and amanda....others not so much

I do agree with you about Betty needing to stop....

helping Daniel so much. While she's his assistant, and without a doubt the moral compass of the show, the combination of way too many unreasonable requests by Daniel and initiatives by Betty, give Betty quite a Mother Theresa element that at times borders on martyrdom. As long as it's really funny and makes Betty smile (like helping Daniel escape from the media at the courthouse), I am all for it.

I also don't want the show to focus on a romance at the expense of all the other elements that I like about the show. Crushes and dates? Sure, but the whole Gio vs. the accountant brings out a whiny element that I think makes Betty less lovable than she's supposed to be.

I used to be a huge fan of the scenes with the family, even the crazier ones in Mexico, but recent ones lack the charm and impact of those that were alive and kicking until Santos got murdered. The first episode of the second season was brilliant it was framed in such a way that it was honest and heart-breaking. Hilda and her married lover? Not so much. Cibrian is hot, but Hilda got white-washed. I want her to be the family tigress again.

They need to be very careful with Justin as his recent "gay" punch-lines have been weak and pale in comparison to the joyful and truly innovative choices they made with the character. I was happily surprised by how the writers made Santos' love for Justin so great that he got over his stuff and even embraced his unique son.

Mr. Suarez to me is the hardest character to write for as the whole immigration bit did not work for me. I'd limit him to comforting his family and watching his "telenovelas," which used to be a show staple that only came back in the latest episode. Sometimes what is on TV is so funny and downright Simpsonesque in that it has it's intended connection but it also throws a bunch of little things that I find hilarious. Watch for cameos that rarely get billed.

Bottom line for me is that while I prefer the action at Mode, I am not against more Suarez, but only if it does not come off looking like a bad imitation of Happy Days. I think that it might be easier to mock the fashion industry, the upper crust, and its aspirational groupies than writing for the Suarez clan and to do it well; however they've done it before and can do it again. I'd also like for the show to continue mining the fun of old school Queens as we know that Hilda and Betty have rivals, friends, and who knows what else. Justin might serve as a good second-generation bridge to new neighborhood tales.

As long as the show keeps Betty for whining, being too much of a martyr, or juggling men, I will be happy. The show is indeed called Ugly Betty, but most incarnations of the show have used Betty as its eyes and earns to look at the world around her and how it sees her. For me a little Betty "wisdom" goes a long way. It's still the show with the gayest sensibility on TV and is not yet another boring procedural crime-drama, as the latter genre not only dominates that ratings during the season, but their dominance is only heightened during the off-season.

    Agreed

I pretty much[hands down] agree with your reflection of Betty as a martyr. Her relationship with Daniel is almost formulaic: Daniel do bad + Betty help = happy resolution....repeat ad nauseum. It can get annoying. And Betty? She is a saint, and can do no evil. Which isn't very realistic...we all have our bad sides....

Don't get me wrong, I love this incarnation. You are correct about the gay sensibility. I have seen one complete Betty series ( La Fea Mas Bella: Mex) and parts of the Columbian and Spanish versions. Those were very much lacking in the gay department (I mean they had a gay, but a cliche gay!). Those were pretty much Betty focused unlike this series that delves into the lives of all the other supporting characters...which is not to say a bad thing. But when there are too many, the show loses its main focus...Betty. Also I kinda wish that this version (UB) would have followed the Ugly womens squad archetype at MODE so as to be a foil to Marc and Amanda when they would poke fun at betty. Christina isn't cutting it for me. But as I said, with the inclusion of all the other characters, (and even Lindsay now), I guess that would be a bit much.

The Suarez family does need to kick it up a notch. A cute and funny running gag would be if they were always at Betty's apartment even when uninvited. Betty would get home  and ask how they got in, and they would never tell her and instead change the subject. That way they could be around more often. And knowing Latino families, thats not to far of a stretch. I would love it if they did that.

I am still excited to tune every week though, just to see which turn it will take.

    Cast Shake-Ups

As we're talking about how the cast is changing, and who we want to see more of, I'd like to see more of Marc, Amanda, and Betty as the Assistants Three.  I do like the Marc/Amanda pairing, but I think they come most to life when they have Betty as a straight man (ahem).  Their quasi-insincere joy at seeing Betty again in the season premiere, and their half-effective detective work last week are the highlights of the season to date for me.

I like Justin and look forward to a return to more prominance, but I'm not really upset to have him sidelined these last few episodes.  The producers were right that the cast was overstuffeed last year, and that means not only cutting some deadwood, but that some of the good secondary characters need to take a backseat while they re-establish a focus on the core characters.  Even Christina's role has been somewhat on the backburner, especially considering how prominant the baby plotline has been the last couple of weeks.

That said, with quite a bit of paring down having now happened, I definitely think it's time to return to some of those characters who've been waiting in the wings!

    One More Thing

Does anyone else think that Wili needs to be doing some reassessing of her goals at the same time as Marc?  The failure of her recent takeover of Mode clearly showed not just that she was outmanouevered by the Meads, but that her skills don't actually suit her to running a fashion magazine.  Her first issue flopped on her own merit.  Is she just trying again anyway?  Is she dropping that goal and just going for straight-up control of the business from a non-creative position?

Or are we just supposed to forget that happened and return to the status quo before her takeover?  I really, really hope it's not that.
