"Ugly Betty" (3.09) recaplet: "When Betty met YETI"
I have to admit to being a tad disappointed with last week's frenetic episode of Ugly Betty, but this week's stellar outing is definitely in the running for "best of the season". It has laughs, tears, a gaggle of Zac Efron clones, and the return of Max Greenfield as Nick Pepper! See it all after the break! We start with Amanda still working Betty's last nerve as the roommate from hell. She's stealing money (it wasn't her fault, though ... Betty had the $60 out in the open in her bottom drawer for anyone to take), and now she has a bell she rings to summon Betty (it was for her dog, but it seems to work on roommates, too). Over at Mode she runs into Nick Pepper, played by the multi-talented Max Greenfield. We haven't seen him since the second season, when he was Alexis's conniving assistant.
To the horror of Betty and Marc he announces that he's now the "deputy culture editor" of the New York Review. Since he wasn't at Mode that long, and he was kind of sucky as an assistant, Betty is perplexed how he could have gotten an editor job so easily (okay, now would be the moment when I usually make a cheap "editors" joke at the expense of my bosses at AfterElton.com ... but because next week is Thanksgiving, I'll refrain). Nick informs her that it's all due to his graduating from Y.E.T.I. (Young Editors Training Initiative). Almost everyone who graduates goes on to become a successful editor, but the hardest part is getting accepted into the class. Hmm ... this sounds suspiciously like the training I had to go through to get this job. It was called S.A.S.Q.U.A.T.C.H. (Smart And Sassy Queers Undergoing A Terrifying Chimpanzee Hazing) and let's just say, I'll never look at a banana the same way again. Nick tells her that it won't be easy getting in: she's going to have to find a sponsor, show an entire magazine concept to a bunch of judges, but once she does get in the sky's the limit. Needless to say, she becomes convinced that this is her big break, and after asking Daniel to write a recommendation she heads off to the YETI office to apply. Unfortunately, she's told that if she wants to apply this year, her presentation will have to be ready in ... two days. At home with the family, she decides she only has time to come up with a presentation for a fashion magazine, which garners the same dumbfounded looks from both Justin and Hilda, and at Mode, Daniel and Christina. Ever the best friend, Christina tries her best to help out, but it's a lost cause, especially when Betty finds out that Marc is also applying to YETI ... and they never take two people from one magazine. Distraught, Betty pays another visit to the family, who convince her that if she really wants to make her mark with the presentation she has to be herself, and a fashion magazine is not it. Inspired, she stays up all night and finishes the new presentation, and when Daniel walks into Mode the next morning she looks like Roseanne Roseanna-Danna on a caffeine bender.
She asks Daniel if he had time to write that recommendation, and he mumbles his way through a "no", and when she asks him to help her out with the presentation dry run, he agrees. Now what do you think the chances are that it'll actually happen? If you said zero, you were right. When it's time for her to leave for YETI, Daniel is nowhere to be found, and she stares daggers of ice at his empty desk. She arrives at the YETI office, and is ushered into a room for her presentation, and OMG, I swear it is the exact same room they used in the climactic scene of Flashdance. There's a long cavernous distance between her and the table of judges, a hardwood floor, and I'm positive I saw a turntable in the corner. I was expecting to see an America Ferrara stunt double in the presentation scenes, but if there was one, it was edited perfectly. She gives the presentation, for something called B Magazine, which has pictures of women like Hillary Clinton and Princess Diana on the cover. It's a lifestyle magazine for young women who care more about what's on the inside than superficial qualities. It's a very noble concept, but it's something no one would ever, ever buy. The judges are impressed, though, and Betty leaves the room elated. Hilda and Ignacio are there to celebrate with her, but it's short lived when they see Marc coming down the hallway to give his presentation. He has a posse of Mode staff with him, and his magazine is called A List, which is about celebrity culture and why we're so addicted to it. Unfortunately for Betty, his presentation is an entire finished magazine, and worse yet, his sponsors are iconic design guys Mark Badgley and James Mischka (who plays themselves, badly! They're like two fashionable blocks of wood dropped in the scene).
Betty is crushed, and takes it out on Daniel the next morning by giving him the silent treatment (except for texting). He asks what he can do to make it up, but she's still too furious with him to answer. She's convinced that she lost YETI to Marc, but the phone rings and she finds out that she got in! She can't believe it, and neither can Marc, who she tries to comfort but should have left alone. He tells her (in a wonderfully played scene by America and Michael Urie) that the only reason they picked her was because they needed to fill their quota of token ethnic girls. Betty is stunned, and so was I, frankly. This was the first time I really wanted to smack the character of Marc.
Hilda and Ignacio visit Mode to celebrate, but when Betty tells them what Marc said, they're livid. Unfortunately, Marc may have been telling the truth. Betty called the YETI people, and they didn't deny the "quota" angle of her acceptance. Her sister and father try to convince her that it doesn't matter why she got in, but it does matter to Betty. She tells Marc that he deserves it more, and that she's dropping out so he can go. He accepts, reluctantly (but not too reluctantly), and apologizes for what he said before. He wants her to know that he's not racist, in fact, some of the hottest guys he's dated have been Latino. Betty is dejected, but resigned to her situation when Daniel calls her into his office. To make up for what happened, he contacted the YETI people and told them that Betty worked at Player Magazine earlier in the year (which means that accepting her wouldn't clash with their "no two people at the same magazine" rule). That fact plus the six page recommendation letter he wrote means that she's been accepted into YETI!
As she sits at her desk, jubilant, Marc calls from across the room to congratulate her, and they have a seriously giddy conversation about what to expect. This is probably the closest they've ever been, and I was glad to see the warmth in Marc come out (and it made me forget that just minutes earlier I wanted to smack him). Meanwhile, Wilhelmina and Daniel are having troubles of their own with the engaged couple of Connor and Molly. Willi is convinced she can woo Connor away from the "do-gooding gremlin", and hatches a plan to separate them. She tells Connor that she needs his help at an advertisers meeting in Florida, and he's forced to leave his fiance behind ... with Daniel. Molly asks him if he can fill in for Connor in her kindergarten class. He was supposed to show up and talk about working for a magazine, but Daniel agrees to pinch hit. What follows is one of the most terrifying scenes ever filmed, as Daniel stands on one side of the classroom while the kids recite a disturbing chant about a demon named Red Rover, and then swarm all over his body like nose picking locusts.
Somehow Daniel in unfazed, and actually seems to enjoy the experience. It's obvious he's carrying a torch for Molly, and there's just no way this is going to end happily. Willi (who is at her poisonous best in this episode) is down in Florida with Connor, and turns on all of her spidery charms to try and seduce him. Unfortunately, not even wine and promise of "Willi and the hand jive" can convince him, and he tells her, in no uncertain terms, that he loves Molly and that Willi is wasting her time.
Back at the office she takes out her frustrations by being testy towards Marc, and when she tells him she knows that he applied to YETI, he looks terrified. However, after chewing him out, she says "I can't think of anyone more deserving. Congratulations." and we actually see the hint of a smile. It's a great scene, and I'm glad they show us these occasional glimpses of humanity from both Willi and Marc. And now we get to the best, and most heartbreaking part of this week's episode. Justin and his ballet buddy Randy have become best friends, and have made plans to see the school production of Little Shop of Horrors together.
Unfortunately, Randy runs into his school friends at the production, who look disgusted when they find out that he's watching the show with Justin. Randy is obviously embarrassed, but doesn't say anything. Later, Hilda presents Justin with two tickets for him and Randy to see In The Heights on Broadway, and he can't wait to tell his best friend the news. Sadly, when he approaches Randy at school, he's given the brush off, and when Randy sees that his friends are watching, he shouts at Justin, "Dude, stop following me around, it's pathetic! get a life!" Justin is stunned and crushed, and it's a scene that will be recognizable to many, many gay kids who lost friends due to peer pressure and homophobia. When Justin finally breaks down and tells Hilda that Randy hates him because "I don't fit in with his friends," she says, "That's their problem, because you are perfect. But you're going to meet a lot of stupid people in your life, and they're just not going to get you. Screw 'em. All that matters is that you never, for a second, change who you are."
Did I mention that Hilda is my favorite character? She and Justin decide to go see the show together, and it's clear that with a mom like her, Justin will be okay (but I was secretly hoping that she'd go Brune Hilda and hunt down Randy and his Effin Efrons). That's it for this episode, but I was sorry to see it end. Along with the "Crush'd" episode a few weeks ago, I think this is the highlight of the season. It had tons of great moments:
Amanda Telling Betty "I don't just think of you as an assistant, but also a roommate ... and sometimes a maid." Willi describing all the ways that she and Connor are similar, and Marc declaring "he's the man-himina!" When Betty tells Marc that her magazine idea is about fashion, he asks, "what is it called, Clashing Patterns Digest?" She responds with "no need to be so snarky." Hey! Snark is a good thing! Sometimes snark is all you have!
There won't be an episode next week, but we'll be back in two weeks for the next recap. I'm hoping they can find some way to have Randy come to his senses, and that we'll see him again, and I like that Betty is making real strides in her career without having to sacrifice who she is. And that was the real theme of this episode: "Be Yourself". What did you think? Do you agree that this was one of the best of the season, or did it disappoint you? It seems like a perfect opportunity to write in a 'crush' feeling and an official acknowledgement of Justin being gay and all that can bring with it. He's certainly at the age where these things begin to happen, at least nowadays.

I think there is still so much fleshing out they could do with those characters. Seriously - spin off show anyone? I adore the little 'MODE after hours' clips that are on the ABC website. They are pure wonderfulness. Amanda and Marc are like the new Jack & Karen, only hotter. Also - my favorite line of last nights ep: "Betty, You know fashion means clothing, right?" oh mandy. DaisyViolet (20 points) (4 posts) on Fri, 2008-11-21 13:39.It was an awesome episode of an excellent show. I have loved Marc and Amanda from the beginning and it's nice to see them develop some nuances (and nice to see Amanda in the bathtub, but maybe that's just me...) I also love Justin and am glad they seem to be finally getting him on the yellow brick road, as it were. I think that this Ballet Boy is not just going to be a 'crush' storyline, but he's going to turn out to be Justin's first boyfriend, after learning a valuable lesson about life, etc. Keep up the good work with the recaps too!

Javi (265 points) (52 posts) on Fri, 2008-11-21 14:39.This is definitely one of the the best episodes of the season. It was absolutely amazing. I so had tears in my eyes during the Justin and Hilda talk in the kitchen. I too wish she would have gone to school and opened a can of whoop-ass...but maybe she didn't because of coach hottie? Either way, the potential is still there...Hilda will protect her child like a fierce lioness if need be, Also the whole Betty getting accepted because of a quota dilemma hit especially to home...and I could def understand her decision to let mark have it. But in the end, they BOTH got in so it was lovely. And usually i'm the first one to hate on Daniel for ignoring Betty, but the scene with the 6 page recommendation was very cute and endearing....so he get's left off with a warning this go around.... Willi was awesome in her devilish schemes and am glad she congratulated Marc in the end... such an awesome episode! Best Episode so farSubmitted by

I love how were finally seeing different sides of Marc (even if they're not all pretty). I hope they really play out Marc and Betty's burgeoning friendship. Also, the Justin story line was good too I hope this is not the last will see of Randy, I think the potential for a love story between him and Justin is there.. Overall an amazing episode.

"Get Real" LiteSubmitted by
Dave Doty (485 points) (99 posts) on Sat, 2008-11-22 00:27.Loved the YETI plotline. Of course, this means that if Betty isn't an editor by the end of season 4, she's the biggest loser in publishing. Ticking clock on a basic premise shakeup, or shark jump. In other news, I didn't notice Marc's hair at all this week, and sincce it usually bugs me, that means it must have been his best hair yet. I'm not sure, I didn't notice it.
The Connor/Wili/Daniel/Molly plot? Snore.
I liked the Justin plot okay, despite the "Get Real" lite aspects that inspired my subject line, but I was thinking that we'd actually get to see a tertiary character learn a lesson, rather than simply existing to enable a primary or secondary character's learning. Silly me.
I agree. The Justin plotSubmitted by
Michaelangelo (576 points) (113 posts) on Sat, 2008-11-22 09:20.I agree. The Justin plot could have been stronger. That cutesy little scene at the end was sweet but hasn't Hilda continuously indicated that she supports and loves her son for who he is? I was hoping to see more than what they gave us. The "straight" jock succumbs to peer pressure, ridicules the girly-boy and girly-boy runs home to mommy who tells him that he's the sweetest, most special boy in all of Oz. How about we give the "straight" jock some balls? When the fight or flight reflex kicks in, we too often take the latter option. I'd like to see what happens when someone steps into the ring.

Jamie (80 points) (18 posts) on Mon, 2008-11-24 13:50.It would be great to see the "straight" jock get some balls and stand up for his friendship with Justin. But, how realistic is that? How often does that happen in real life? (been there!) I liked that this happened to Justin, especially since we know this isn't the end of the jock... I'm interested to see where they take this, and how far they go with delving into Justin's sexuality.

But I adored the phone conversation between Marc and Betty at the end of the episode. Great work by both actors. On a side note, I always end up getting so hungry after the episodes. starri (35 points) (8 posts) on Sat, 2008-11-22 08:12.I've set it before: Every gay teen needs a mom like Hilda Suarez and every gay adult needs a mom like Nora Walker. That aside, I had a really hard time keeping from getting verklempt in the last scene between Justin and Hilda. I've had a lot of favorite gay and gay-adjacent scenes from this show, but everytime I think they've reached their zenith, they manage to surprise me. Why is everyone so willingSubmitted by
Michaelangelo (576 points) (113 posts) on Sat, 2008-11-22 09:05.Why is everyone so willing to forgive Marc? That schmaltz-fest closing scene between Marc and Betty rang so hollow to me. It didn't make me forget that I wanted to smack Marc for calling betty and odious cow and the ethnic girl. It just reinforced my opinion that the writer's are trying to make mark a little less like the bitchy gay stereotype but fail miserably because his initial actions are so absolutely irredeemable. I find it very hard to like him. His hatefulness sort of ruined for me my favorite Betty episode this season. I'm also a bit worried about the characters' lack of growth. While this season has gone back to what worked initially for the show, the characters haven't evolved much. Daniel continuously shirks his responsibility and disappoints Betty but then does the right thing after the damage has been done. Shouldn't he have learned by now? Two weeks in a row we've been forcefed this storyline. I'll throw you under the bus Betty but, don't worry, I'll pay for your surgery. Marc has bullied Betty from day one, usually until he gets what he wants, and then is humanized with soft lighting. Amanda is Amanda and will always be Amanda(I can handle this one). What worries me most is Betty. I can't fathom that a girl who lives with a hairdresser(and a seemingly good one) would not be open to at least slight improvements. I can't imagine that a girl who works for a fashion magazine, someone continually beaten down for her lack of fashion sense and someone surrounded by fashion resources wouldn't at least inquire as to potential improvements. I can't imagine why someone would subject herself to braces when her teeth couldn't be straighter. I don't think that tweezers and some Manolos would compromise Betty's integrity. They don't have to completely take the ugly out of Betty but let's see some growth here.

darcolover55 (1101 points) (283 posts) on Sat, 2008-11-22 12:08.BETTY's FASHION As a thriftstore dresser myself, I actually love Betty's fashion sense and the way she combines things is funky and unusual but not unknowing. She's changed somewhat in that now she works the fitted/belted suit jackets and A-line tops look which suit her figure nicely. But, she LIKES clashing patterns. She LIKE crazy hats. She's works the fabulous leggins and heals thing. Clothing is supposed to express who YOU are, not what the folks around you THINK you SHOULD wear. Not, it's not MODE fashion but originally she didn't want to work for a Fashion magazine at all. She just wanted a job where she'd get to write and learn to be an editor. Betty's way of dressing would be completely fashionable in the East Village of NYC or Williamsburg Brooklyn or some other funky thriftstore clothing wearing environment. I think it only stands out because she placed in the environment to of "High" fashion. Which is kind of the point. Betty dresses the way she wants to dress which is true to herself not because she doesn't KNOW folks think she dresses crazy, but because she LIKES it and refused to care. Obviously she COULD dress like everyone at MODE but I think the point is she doesnt want to. Even Christina is a bit funkier in her dressing than the rest of MODE staff. Also, America Ferrera is a beautiful girl so I think the braces and hair and the colored glasses are mean to tone that down abit. I'd love to see her in chunkier square colored frames. Still nerdy and funky but cuter and more modern. BEING TRUE TO YOURSELF AND SAYING "F YOU"! I think part of the episode was about being true to yourself but I also think it was about understanding that being who you are (even being Latina in a sea of non Latinos folks) comes with a price. When you are the odd person out because you're being yourself, you will constantly be presented with the choice to conform or go along with and that's when you really know who you are, what you're made of. It's a central theme of the show that every character has had to go through Justin and Betty and Randy this episode (but Daniel, Alexis, Willi even Marc are constantly dealing with that reality) JUSTIN and RANDY I loved Justin and Randy and I think Randy is going to make a mends. Justin is a lot more self-aware and self-posessed than most kids his age because when you're not part of the status quo, you have to be. I just hope they resolve the issues quickly and that Rand redeems himself in a way that is real and public and unabashed. It's a lot to expect for a high schooler but still, I have high hopes. Randy's words were harsh but not unforgiveable. We'll see. MARC, UGH. I normally love Marc. But his behavior with Cliff last week and this week with Betty makes me worry for the character. After everything Betty has done for Marc, for him to say what he said was just 87 kinds of wrong. What happened to the Marc who begged Betty to help him with mama Patty Lupone? WTF? "odious cow" was SOOOO over the top. Did he even properly apologize? Seriously?! ONLY ONE SYNDROME I think the issue of being the "token" is a real one for those of us of color who have to operate in a mostly white environment (for school or work or whatever) and I'm sure Selma Hayek et al. wanted to make that point. There is always going to be that tension between wanted to be seen for your own talents and individual contributions and frequently being seen as a "representative" of a group regardless of your individual talents. Heterosexuality is not normal, it's just common." (Dorothy Parker) prefectSubmitted by

The scene at the end with Justin and his mom was so sweet, perfection, really. I don't care if it's been done before, or if Hilda has shown her support in the past. Every teen needs parents who will love them for who they are. And I expect his friend Randy will find out how shallow his friends are and come back to apologize to Justin. One thing they never explained is why Randy was so upset at losing the audition. I expected there to be a back story, like over bearing parents that would only allow him to dance if he could prove himself -the opposite of Hilda. Having a boy crush? Justin is only 14, perhaps a little young to come out? I would think that Randy is jealous of Justin. I loved this show, but I agree that the story is starting to flat line. After seeing this episode I imagined season 4: Betty and Marc go to Yeti to compete and graduate, Season 5: Betty loses the braces and she and Mark each take over a magazine at Mode And Willhelmina and Daniel take a back seat or are fired as Betty and Marc become the new Dan and Wil, respectively. Daniel should settle down with that school teacher and Wil should move to Oz to be with Conner, the kind of man that could get even willi to move half way around the world.

Raiden251 (120 points) (28 posts) on Sat, 2008-11-22 14:53.Is it just me or did Betty ultimately being elated and accepting the YETI orientation package from Daniel kinda made no sense? I mean, throughout the whole episode, she was going on and on about how she wants to make it in by her merits blah blah blah. Then, at the last second, she was more than happy that she made it in after all despite the fact that it wasn't her merit AT ALL? The quota was still intact, and on top of that, it was string pulling from a man in a powerful position. The whole thing rang false for me and it made no sense. Ugh. But despite all that, I do have to say that it was one of the best episodes this season, I'm gonna push it and say that it was even possibly one of the best of all three seasons. Betty's Yeti Application Processed Required a RecommendationSubmitted by
darcolover55 (1101 points) (283 posts) on Sat, 2008-11-22 15:23.I seemed that having a strong recommendation from someone in the publishing field was actually a BIG part of the application process. The fact that the initially accepted her without the recommentation I think was part of why her getting in made no sense the first time around. Obviously she's qualified to participate in the training program based on how hard working she is and the fact that when she has had the opportunity to write or be in charge, she has always been successful (despite the antics of others) I don't think getting a strong recommendation means she didn't get in on her own merits. If she'd been a horrible applicant who wasn't qualified, even being Latina couldn't have saved her. I think given how much Betty has done for the Meade family (above and beyond the call of duty for sure) you'd think Daniel would have been totally on top of the recommendation from the get go (even despite his fears about losing Betty). It was selfish and undermining of him not to have done what Betty asked to begin with. I'm glad he made a really big deal of recommending her at the end. She deserved to get in. I believe Marc deserved to get in as well, though he was AWFUL to Betty and I'm not sure how I feel about the character now. We'll see. "Heterosexuality is not normal, it's just common." (Dorothy Parker) Still lacking sense.Submitted by
Raiden251 (120 points) (28 posts) on Sun, 2008-11-23 01:14.I'm in no way implying that she didn't have the merit, I'm saying that in the context of the episode/story, the judges implicitly chose her because of their quota and wasn't based on her merit or quality, hence, they chose her over Marc. And also, in no point in the episode did anyone from the panel of judges/YETI reassured her of her talent or, here it is again, "merit". She was outright against the whole concept of it, and yet, she still took it? If anything, despite Daniel's reccommandation, his string pulling made it even less so about merit. And yet she was still ELATED to take it in the end? I'm just still scratching my head over that one. Also, her dad pushing her take advantage of of the fact that she's Latina to get ahead when possible seemed a little bit out of character. He was always her moral compass when her's got wonky by the people she works with. And even with all this pushing, she still gave the position to Marc, which established the fact that she wants to make it on her own terms and merits, and not just because she is nice. Does she deserve it? Yeah, I think so. But ultimately, I think a Magazine Premise/Project that was magically whipped over night would seem like crap compared to one that took 3 months to make. Which is why I loved that twist about the quota. Puts a new twist on the whole David vs. Goliath angle. some of it's senselessSubmitted by
Nukely (2470 points) (711 posts) on Sun, 2008-11-23 10:40.Quota systems are in place to ensure that ... well, do I need to explain why?
After electing Obama, I fear that people might think that the quota system is irrelevant or only protects one class of people. In this show, Betty was faced with the very personal reflection of quotas. The conflict was not over her making the grade as a minority, but taking away the opportunity from someone else who might be more deserving. That is a sticky issue. The way they played it was faulty. The focus was on Marc's considerable merit, not on the desire of the YETI staff to include everyone. Technically that's done with numbers. Sometimes those numbers look ugly. While I enjoy the conflict between Betty and Marc, I am disappointed to see it de-evolve to this. The crux of the story was that only one person from a magazine could be accepted. If Marc had not applied, Betty's merit would not have come into conflict. If Betty had worked for any other magazine she would have merited over other applicants. Wanting to have diversity in a school is not a bad thing. It's a very good thing. Something I hope we never lose sight of.
