Was NUKE among this morning's Daytime Emmy Nominees?
The nominations for the 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards were announced this morning on The View, and there was good news for As The World Turns fans. Of course, getting to the announcements meant we had to endure the shrill ramblings of Elizabeth Hasselback and flat-earther Sherri Shepherd (the things i'm willing to do for my Luke!) Things got a bit testy between Elizabeth and the always fab Whoopi Goldberg, and I kept expecting (hoping for) a split-screen to pop up, but the also fab Joy Behar managed to diffuse things. Then, in one of the strangest segues I've ever seen, they suddenly drop the heated political discussion, the scowls and stare-downs disappear, and it's time for the nominations. But first, the always entertaining (and slightly cuckoo) Tyra Banks shows up out of nowhere and chatters like a magpie about, well, I'm not really sure. By the time they say "the nominations are next!", the show is already half over, and I've only caught a brief glimpse of Van Hansis, who's one of the stars announcing the noms. After the commercial, Van shows up with some girl to announce the Younger Actor & Actress Nominees, and The Girl Who Reminds Brian Of Haley Joel Osment (also known as Jennifer Landon) is the only nominee from ASWT (which i don't really get. This actress gave the absolute worst "evil double" performance I've ever seen). The girl with Van announces the Younger Actor nominees, and Van is nominated! (and he gets a huge cheer from the studio audience). There's another nominee from ASWT, but it's not Noah, played by Jake Silbermann, it's the character of Will, played by Jesse Lee Soffer, who was part of the "baby mama" storyline. Supporting Actress & Actor are announced, and both Henry, played by Trent Dawson, and Emily (Kelley Mehighan Hensley) receive nominations. They move on to the talk show category, and power lesbian Ellen Degeneres leads the pack, and then Leading Actress is announced, and Quaker Oats Lady (Maura West) is nominated (as I recall, she won last year). No nominees from ASWT for Leading Actor, and the show is shut out of the big award, for Best Drama. Here is Van announcing the nominees and getting nominated!
Well, For the second year in a row Van is nominated for Younger Actor, but next year he'll have to compete in the regular Supporting Actor category, which is a lot tougher, so this is probably going to be his best bet to win that much deserved gold statue. You can see the entire list of nominees here and be sure to watch the Daytime Emmy Awards on ABC in primetime on June 20th. Keep your fingers crossed for Van, but don't be surprised if a certain disgruntled non-nominee decides to crash the party

The lack of a best writing nomination may say it best
With regard to Jen Landon, it's a case of a nomination of paralysis, being well-liked, and performances given years ago. This may be her 3rd or 4th consecutive nomination, with at least 2 wins. I am sooo glad she's gone as the triple punch of Cleo/Baby Mama/being on every day for years made me never want to see her again.
It's awesome to see Henry's portrayer nominated as comedic performers rarely get a nod. He's is 100 times better than what he is given and I hope that a gay heart beats in the man who portrays him. I would have liked to see Austin Peck recognized for his portrayal of Brad as manages to bring some real humor to the even the cheesiest comedy or maudlin scenes written by the current scribes.
I am happily surprised that Van got a nod as they have to present two full episodes (not clips) and the actor is not only rarely on period, but even when he is, he was not rewarded with a Luke-centric episode that writers generally dish out during the year for these purposes. Go Van!!!!!
After watching yesterday's show, I would love to see Luke continue to grow a pair so that maybe he can become a character that is worth watching and can at least serve as a relf-respecting gay role model that some of the show's defenders want America to see.

The Writing Sucks
I couldn't agree with you more about the writing on ATWT. You mentioned previously that you've watched the show for years. I watched steadily for awhile on both sides of 1990, and I think you'll agree the writing then was very good. (I think they won writing awards a few times.) I was lucky enough to be watching during the period when Lily discovered that her father (who had recently come into her life) had raped her mother, and that her conception was a result of the rape. There were some literally edge-of-your-seat episodes then, which is very rare in soapland. The acting was also superb. The guy who played her father (William somebody) has gone on to do great character work in movies. And the woman who played Iva, her mother, did a fantastic job, balancing her horror at the return of her rapist, and his efforts to get to know Lily, with her efforts to protect Lily. Soaps don't get better than that.
The writing was great until head guy Doug Marland died, and then went downhill. In the past two years there has been a bit of great writing (some of Luke's coming out stuff was really good), but some horrible dreck as well.
Regarding Henry, Trent Dawson at one point went to the PTB at the show and suggested his character become gay. They turned him down. Some have suggested that Trent is gay himself, but he's apparently not, at least based on his dating history. I doubt if he were gay he would date women, and then suggest that his character be gay. Interestingly, when he started on the show he was a very unsympathetic character, and they gradually made him lovable.
I watched yesterday's episode last night, and it really feels to me like they're trying to run through the Ameera storyline as fast as they can (in the old days Luke would have lived with them for weeks before deciding it didn't work). And I also get the feeling they WANT to get Luke and Noah together. I know you and a lot of others disagree with that, but that's my prediction. And I'm sticking to it!
We agree on many things......
I also agree that it was obvious that Luke's move-in/move-out was executed in what is now becoming standard ATWT faster than the speed of light video game mode, but I don't see it as any big step other than than up the gay baiting as there three almost open mouth kiss fake-outs must have been wrapped with a bow to the AFA.
I hope that your predictions of a Nuke pairing is what the writers want, but I am afraid that these two characters have been given the burden of carrying a banner of hysteria to earn free publicity as there is little else going on that can move anyone when it comes to actual story. So what I see happening is that if they wind up going to second base, it will be done in the most exploitative of ways and that they will break them up almost before either climaxes. That will bring more noise and we'll hear that it's just old-fashioned story-telling as no one likes to see happy couples.
I hope that I am 100% wrong and that the show reels in its act and simply moves these two characters along without using them to create noise until they earn it. They have so many other pairings to piss off the viewers and Carly and Holden is an interesting start. Luke and Noah deserve better. A quiet pairing may not bring in viewers or cause all this commotion, but could cement a relationship that people get so involved in (a la Douglas Marland) and THEN they can go ape sh!t with crazy obstacles.

Damning With Faint Praise, Or the Reverse?
I don't know if the following opinion is damning with faint praise, or praising with faint damnation, but I don't think the ATWT people are smart enough to have created and manipulated this storyline to exploit ratings while sticking it to the queers. I think they thought they'd create a nice little gay storyline that would generate publicity and ratings, but that they could keep it restrained and gradual enough to not alienate their old line audience. They completely misjudged the gay community, PLUS the younger straight women (their largest demographic, which also made up a large portion of the Queer As Folk audience). From what I read, the younger straight women have been protesting the lack of intimacy rather strongly.
So now they're kind of stuck in that they still don't want to alienate the conservatives, but they want to do a better job of satisfying the new audience. They thought the Ameera storyline would be great because it would keep the guys out front, while providing an excuse for buttoning up the sex. (Like I said, they aren't very bright.) So it's more miscalculation than calculation. I think the speed of light Luke move in/move out might be reflective of them trying to get out of something that totally backfired on them.
I completely agree with you that I'd like to see Nuke move ahead with a common sense "normal" relationship for awhile, with the story being just in that. Again, the lack of smarts will, I'm afraid, result in their fate being the same as all couples. There's no drama in happiness, so they'll have to break them up. It will probably be temporary the first time, followed by a dramatic reconciliation.
Can you imagine what Doug Marland would have done with this situation?!?! It pains me to think of what we're missing.
I have to admit that Henry
The Nomination
Great for Van (miss the blond locks).
I can't, however, concur more on the writing; and the directing isn't any better. I wasn't aware that daytime television had directing by committee. It is so all over the place, perhaps the dirctors rotate on a weekly basis. The director(s) need to step up to the plate and grow some balls himself. But maybe he is only playing chess (moving actors around) and has no real involvement in actually telling a story, most of the episodes have no real tension and I am not referring to will they kiss or won't they kiss. That near kiss yesterday was as believable as Al Reynolds marriage to to Starr Jones. Whatever happened to the "act the truth" axiom?
It is the soap tradition to mix things up when couples get too happy until you have been on the show for 30 years and are too old to have sex. But if NUKE breaks up where will they go with two gay characters. Jake could be in trouble, I doubt P&G will approve two more gay characters -- hell the boys don't much interact with other Oakdale gays. How many young healthy gay men in love stay home and worry that Mom is going to completely change her identity in a couple of weeks. It is 2008, the love that dared not speak its name, is now in a sharing from the rooftops mode. Just because Luke didn't pick up a gun and kill himself at the end of his coming out arc doesn't mean TV producers have embraced gay culture.
Van's acting
Maybe it's my theatre background, or maybe it's just plain obvious to everybody, but with writing this bad, it's easy to see who has actual acting chops, and who are just pretty faces, and Van has got the goods.
He consistently tries to bring something to every line, whether it's on the page or not. He really deserves this nomination, and hopefully the win.
Jake on the other hand, as adorable as he is, certainly hasn't earned an Emmy nod, at least not yet, so there was no suprise there.
Thankfully they got rid of the guy playing Dusty who was possibly the worst actor I've seen in a long time.
I'm still undecided about Austin Peck who plays Brad. He's either really bad, or actually brilliant at playing an idiot
