Watch and Discuss: Previews of Guillermo Diaz, Joel McHale and more in the new NBC lineupAbove you can see a preview of NBC's upcoming fall series Mercy, which follows the professional lives of a group of hospital nurses. Although you don't see much of him in the preview, one of the nurses is played by out chameleon actor Guillermo Diaz, and though we don't know yet whether his character Angel is gay, Guillermo is sure to make the nurse fascinating. From the preview the show looks to be a standard hospital drama, with the novelty being that it's shot from the point of view of nurses. We get the expected nurse vs. doctor showdown, the "tough nurse" (who was in Iraq), the newbie (played by Michelle Trachtenberg!), and a startlingly hirsute James LeGros. I love Guillermo so I'll probably check it out, but It'll have to be pretty damn special to hold a candle to the greatest show about nurses ever made: Nightingales. Please tell me I'm not the only one who remembers this short-lived drama from 1989? C'mon ... Suzanne Pleshette? ... Kristy Swanson? ...Gil Gerard? If Mercy doesn't interest you, we've got a couple of other previews that might wet your whistle ... Day One From executive producer/writer Jesse Alexander (Heroes, Lost, Alias) and director Alex Graves (Fringe, Journeyman), Day One tells the story of life on earth following a global catastrophe that has devastated the world's infrastructures. Beginning with the immediate aftermath of the cataclysmic event, an eclectic band of survivors -- played by Adam Campbell, Catherine Dent, Julie Gonzalo, David Lyons, Derek Mio, Carly Pope, Thekla Reuten and Addison Timlin -- strives to rebuild society as they unravel the mysteries of what happened and face their uncertain future. The group, all residents of one apartment building in suburban Van Nuys, Calif., embarks on a quest for survival and discovers that hope is found in small victories -- and heroes are born every day. Well, the press release had me at "global catastrophe" and "cataclysmic event", and the "behind-the-scenes" clip was interesting. I love end-of-the-world stuff, so this might be a must-see. Community From Emmy Award-winning directors Joe and Anthony Russo (Arrested Development) comes Community, a smart comedy series about higher education -- and lower expectations. The student body at Greendale Community College is made up of high-school losers, newly divorced housewives, and old people who want to keep their minds active. Within these not-so-hallowed halls, Community focuses on a band of misfits, at the center of which is a fast-talkin' lawyer whose degree has been revoked (Joel McHale), who form a study group and end up learning a lot more about themselves than they do about their course work. In addition to McHale, the series also stars Gillian Jacobs, Yvette Nicole Brown, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie and comedy legend Chevy Chase. The press release had me at Joel McHale. The other previews for the new shows run the gamut from predictable, standard medical drama (Trauma), to predictable, standard sitcom (100 Questions), plus ... The Jay Leno Show. Ugh. Any of these previews pique your interest in watching the shows? Submitted by on Tue, 2009-05-05 11:28. |

Okay, so actually, I hated Nightingales
I remember watching the original pilot (remember back when networks did summer pilot burn-offs, good times) and was really excited when it got a late pickup but they dumped the storylines I was most interested in. The vamp nurse was gone along with the one with a dual personality. The series lost a lot of fun from the original to the revised pilot. (IIRC, they also quickly got rid of the guy who was using the naive nurse to steal drugs.) Maybe I would have liked Nightingales better if I hadn't seen the original pilot, but it was like going from the first glorious season of Grand to the second blandcom season.
Joel McHale
I love Joel, and would really like to see his new sitcom do well!! I'm skeptical though...I hope I'm wrong. I'll be watching!
Isn't Day One, just Jericho but with less people??
Day One
Day One
Day One sounds interesting the others not so much... worn out on the hospital drama's. I'm hoping NBC brings back Chuck and Medium because I think they are two of the most unique shows on TV. Chuck is by far the most entertaining show from a comedy/drama standpoint. Medium - I can't put my finger on why I enjoy the show so much but I do (plus it's a rare show that actually takes place where I live... Phoenix).
Love me some Guillermo
Really?
Really? A medical drama called Trauma?
Wouldn't it have been cheaper to keep ER on, with a firm fanbase and consistent ratings over picking up a show that's probably going to suck and die a horrible death?
(I love Southland, but I so miss ER dearly. Plus, a 16 season would probably have added Gay Pratt Brother Chaz as a regular.)
