Watch and Discuss: Matthew Fox and Jimmy Kimmel's "staring contest"

Above you can see a comedy bit from The Jimmy Kimmel Show last night featuring Jimmy and guest Matthew Fox.

The clip involves the two of them in an extended "staring contest", in which they remain oblivious to everything around them while staring each other down.

So far, so good. It goes on a bit too long, but it's a perfectly serviceable late-night comedy bit. It ends with the two of them in the shower, which brings up a few urgent questions; Was it necessary to throw in a "drop-the-soap" scene? Is this "drop-the-soap" scene offensive, or is it possible that not all "drop-the-soap" scenes are created equal? Why the hell is Matthew Fox shaving his body? Is it wrong that I find Jimmy in the shower ... hot?

Your thoughts?

    Ugh

Yes, it is offensive.  Not a major issue, just annoying.

I will never understand why straight men think male-male (I refuse to call it gay) rape is so hilarious.

You posed the question Snicks whether all "drop-the-soap" jokes are created equal.  Have you ever come across one that was actually funny?

The only one I can think of is from an episode of Family Guy where Peter says to Brian, "It is so true what they say about dropping the soap in prison.  I could barely hold onto the thing."  The only reason it is funny is because it is showing how stupid drop-the-soap jokes are.

    Yes ugh! To gay stereotyping!

Especially when gays do it! Shame on you! Drop a a soap in any context goes knee-jerk into rape in prison. How totally politically incorrect. What has "funny" have to do with it? It can be ironic, satirical, sociopolitical - but hardly rates a rant! Get a life!

    Is this personal for you?

If anyone compares our two statements, I am pretty sure they will conclude you are the one ranting.

Speaking as a person who was almost raped (it was in a dorm room, not a shower) I can say rape should never be a joke.  I have never come across a rape joke I found funny.  If one exists, tell me about it.  Otherwise leave me and any other person affected by rape alone. Thank you.

What does he say at the end?

At the very end, while they're walking out of frame, it sounds like he asks the guy holding the manhole cover "Do you want to have sex?". Kinda random...maybe it's just my ears.

    In context

Is it only a "drop-the-soap" joke if it is in the context of a prison? Becasue in this case, the scene does not take place in a prison but instead just a regular shower. I don't think "male rape" was implied in this clip. If you look carefully, I think Jimmy smiles when Matthew drops the soap because he would have to bend down and break eye contact. I mean why would Matthew Fox have any qualms about bending over in front of Jimmy, they are already both "naked" and in the same shower together.

However, I do take  issue with the fact of using the idea of two men naked together in a shower as a joke because "hee hee look they are naked and in the shower together....that is SO GAY". I think I was more annoyed about that fact. Well I guess when it comes to our country anything to do with nuidty is still grounds for a cheap laugh so I will let that one slide.

So yea a little cheap gay panic I suppose but not too much to get bent out of shape over. The Ben Afleck/Jimmy Kimmel big gay bit was even worse.

    To address the questions

    1. Whenever Matthew Fox is willing to do a shower scene, it's necessary to do the shower scene.  And as low as the camera went, he seemed to be wearing at most a modesty pouch.  Plus.
    2. Was the drop the soap gag necessary? Not really, but in the grand scheme of Kimmel gay humor, this wasn't bad.  The addition of the soap-on-a-rope? Funny. I call the scene neutral.
    3. Maybe he's sharing a stunt doublewith Ashton Kutcher? Minus
    4. Yes, snicks, it is wrong you find Kimmel hot in any way. Minus.
Doing the math, the overall scene came out negative, but only because snicks' question caused me to have to take my eyes off naked Matthew Fox and look at Kimmel.  I'll be over at the sink with some bleach if you need me.

    Snicks, snicks, snicks...

I'm going to have to revoke your gay card for that last bit.  Jimmy Kimmel hasn't been decent looking in over five years!  As for the shower scene, I really don't care seeing as its Jimmy Kimmel and no one ever watches him anways...

    Friday the 13th

There was a scene in one of the Friday the 13th movies where a guy in the shower makes a drop-the-soap joke and then gets his head smashed into the wall...that was funny

umm, I don't even think it was a rape joke

I actually think the joke was... you dropped the soap, now you have to pick it up, breaking the stare... which means you lose.

Call me crazy, but that's just regular humor, not anything gay or straight funny about it.

    I don't think so

As a few others have said... I don't think it was a "gay rape" joke.

I think it was just a "I have to bend down to get the soap and break my stare" joke.

As an aside...who still uses soap anymore? Haven't we all moved onto body wash?

Ill tell you, I started to groan

Ill tell you, I started to groan when the soap was dropped, then I stopped when I saw the "punchline". This is not that kind of "drop the soap" joke, because it has complete lack of panic in it, it stayed within the context of the entire video...oh crap Im going to loose, oh wait not so fast, there is no notion of rape here. So yes, maybe not all this jokes are the same.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar

And dropped soap is just soap.  As I was forced to point out to one of my friends, they're not whispering because they know you're gay, they're whispering because you have a string of toilet paper stuck to your shoe.

    My 2 cents worth

I actually thought it was funny. I'm of the opinion is the drop the soap routines are not funny in the context of prisons, or gay rape.. but as this did not suggest either one its perfectly acceptable. I think some of you were missing the point of it in any case, it was to see if they would stop staring, not have sex. Come on fella's stop reading more into things than what they actually are. It's to easy to be offended by things these days with out making shit up.

    Good "clean" fun

    afhickman

It was funny and inoffensive.  But if you think "dropping the soap" in any context doesn't suggest gay panic, I think you're being naive.  However, here the joke is clearly on Fox and Kimmel, so it's fine with me.

    Is it just me or

Jimmy Kimmel didn`t have enough sleep and looked really tired in the clip? Not Hot.(Not that it matters anyway since he totally lost my interest last time he f*cked Ben Affleck.)
