"Weeds" recaplet ("Till We Meet Again"): You Don't Mess with the Gaydar

Early in this season of Weeds, a semi-recurring character was surprisingly outed when we learned that Captain Till’s partner was actually his partner. As in, "tub of lube on the nightstand, making out to a pop song during an episode-ending montage" type of partner.

The scene ignited a debate on the site, including on Michael and Brent’s vlog, about its purpose. Was it thrown in for mere shock value? Or was there a more strategic storyline being set up? As weeks went by with these characters relegated to “barely there” status, it seemed like the former.

And then came this week’s episode, "Till We Meet Again", in which the gay set-up paid off big time, and even managed to involve the show’s other “barely there” gay character, Sanjay (Maulik Pancholy).

That sound you hear is Michael shouting, “Ha! Told ya so!”

Find out what went down — and why no one should ever underestimate the power of gaydar — after the jump.

Last week ended with Nancy (Mary Lousie Parker) cutting a deal with DEA Captain Till (Jack Stehlin) because she couldn’t condone the trafficking of young women that was happening via the tunnel in the back of Maternity World, the phony storefront she was managing.

This week found Tillman’s partner, Agent Shlatter (Andrew Rothenberg), coming into the store undercover as a married man accompained by his pregnant wife. But no one counted on the mighty power of Sanjay’s gaydar, which led to a fairly hysterical dialogue with Nancy, who couldn’t let on she was working with the Feds …

Sanjay: That man is gay! Gay! Gay!
Nancy: The guy in the couple?
Sanjay: Not a couple. There’s weirdness. I think maybe she’s a surrogate, but he called her wife. It’s a puzzler … Maybe they’re not a couple.
Nancy: Get your gaydar checked.
Sanjay: Listen, breeder, my gaydar is never wrong. That man hearts cock.
Nancy: Clearly he hearted her vagina at some point.
Sanjay: You ever hear of in vitro?
Nancy: So, what? Religious and societal pressures have forced him to live the lie?
Sanjay: Maybe he’s a cop. That’s it! He’s an undercover cop here to scope us out and bust us … And then ask me out!
Nancy: Of course, that’s got to be it …
Sanjay: I’m going, but know this: No straight man knows what a drop-waist is. And if he does, he denies it.

Unfortunately for Agent Shlatter, Sanjay isn’t the only one to make him for a narc. The episode ends with a shockingly grisly scene worthy of Hostel as Shlatter is taken prisoner and tortured until he gives up Nancy’s name. Then he’s shot, and we also learn that Sanjay’s been shipped off by the feds. So that makes two barely there gays suddenly not there at all.

However, it looks like establishing Captain Tillman’s love interest all those episodes ago was ultimately working toward raising the emotional stakes in the finale. Scenes from next week indicate a distraught Captain Tillman is pretty intent on avenging his partner’s death. It will be interesting to see how that plays out.

Did anyone else catch the episode? Was it an "I told you so!" moment for you, too?

I say to Michael:

Even a broken clock is right twice a day! (Actually this makes me think WEEDS hasn't gone completely off the rails just yet...)

Yea that was brutal. But a

Yea that was brutal. But a really great way of giving Agent Till a more fleshed out character and emotional motive. I can't wait for the finale.

Oh and I LOVE how they finally addressed the fact that Celia's other daughter disappeared after the first episode and was never spoken of again. I thought they were just pulling a Family Matters on us.

I say next season, more Sanjay and less Doug. He is WAY funnier. And about a trillion times more likable.

Yes, totally agree

I can't tell you how many times throughout this series run, my partner and I have screamed at the TV, "Where the eff is Quinn?"

This week's episode was really like somebody took a serious look at the big picture and all the continuity gaps and plot holes and decided to do something about it. And it made for the strongest plotted episode in ages on this show.

And I also agree about Sanjay and the way Maulik Pancholy plays him -- he often steals scenes and has from the start been given tragically little to do (much like with his role on 30 Rock). He was so funny in this scene with Nancy this ep. -- I wanted to see more.

Clever plotting, slowly

Clever plotting, slowly laying the groundwork, letting it percolate, and wham! Nice stuff.
