Six reasons to save "Ugly Betty"

We'd heard earlier reports that Ugly Betty would be moving to a more hospitable Wednesday night time slot. However, E! Online reported earlier this week that Ugly Betty might instead be limping toward cancellation.

Why, Ugly Betty? Why?!

There's no doubting that Ugly Betty's third season was a debacle in almost every way — but the first six episodes of this season have been the best Betty ever. I think it still has life, and apparently ABC does too. There's been lots of talk lately that the network is going to move the show to Wednesday nights and partner it with the breakout hits Modern Family and Cougar Town.

Here are six reasons I think Ugly Betty deserves a save:

1) Ugly Betty is still the gayest show on TV — Somewhere between the 78th and 79th time I heard "Don't Stop Believin'" on Fox this summer, I thought Glee was going to snatch away the Gayest TV crown, but as the fall season has progressed, I've decided that Glee is kind of a poor-man's Betty.

All the things Glee does well — the camp, the nuanced gay-teen pathos, the pratfalls — Ugly Betty does better. And with Betty, we get the gay with authentic story-telling and characters we've grown to adore.

2) Singing and dancing? — Oh, Betty's got that too.

(I can't decide whether Glee or Betty has a better villain until I see Wilhelmina and Sue go head-to-head in a fisticuffs cage match.)

3) Ugly Betty is the one of the most ethnically and racially-diverse shows on TVAmerica Ferrera and Vanessa Williams keep bringing home the Emmy nods, and Anna Ortiz continues to be one of the most underrated actresses in Hollywood.

4) Betty's writers are queens of mean one-liners — Here are some of the season's most awesomely caustic quips so far:

"Oh, I’m sorry; I couldn’t hear you over your loud shirt." - Betty to Marc

"Now, 'Hot Flash' is just an insert, so you might have some staples in your face. Oh, but you’ve had that before." - Claire to Willy

"Thanks. I feel better. And at least I’ll always have that cold sore." - Amanda to Daniel

"So what?! You’re a chewer! I’m a yeller! We all got something!" - Hilda to Betty

"Don’t be sorry. Being sorry takes time. Just spit it out." - Willy to Betty

"I’m not double-booking haircuts to make money to get you into private school just so you can get rejected ’cause you’re too stupid ’cause you skipped public school." - Hilda to Justin

"That psychedelic misfit toy is living my dream!" - Marc to Willy

5) Betty is finally learning to dance with herself — One of the show's problems has always been finding the balance between Betty's love life and her career. This season, Betty is making her own way, with or without a plus one.

6) There's no denying the power of America — Much has been made of Betty's fourth season makeover, but it has been a seamless transition. It's authentic to the character, and America Ferrera still brings a clumsy affability to role. Besides, the moral of this story has always been that beauty is a state of mind.

What do you think of this season of Ugly Betty? Has the show run its course, or is there life left at Mode?

I really hope ABC does move the show to a new night

I feel like the writing and acting have never been stronger, and it's a shame that the ratings continue to fall. It's just not a great night for this type of show. I dvr it, because I have to work. My friends also have to record it or watch it online later, because they usually like to go out on Friday nights? I mean, who doesn't? I think ABC just needs to give the show at least one final chance, and move it to a new night. They owe the show that much. ABC's Wednesday comedy night would fit perfectly in my opinion!

    Real Time

The notion that you can actually gauge an audience is completely out of touch with reality. Does anyone actually watch anything in real time...Most TV's today have recording equipment of one sort or another, so to think that moving a program is going to make any difference is just silly. Like all media, TV is a state of flux, unable to comprehend how to truly measure a shows audience. There have been so many good shows that disappear overnight without explanation while shows like Lost, which seem to come and go at will (does anyone really follow or care about those islanders who have dazed us with enough time travel as it is?). My sense is that whoever programs television is clueless, really. Glee has the makings of a cultural and popular hit, and what does Fox do, they shelve it for two weeks to show a Simpson special and a football game. Betty will survive. But they cannot move it about again, it's just too much work to switch it on the recording device on our televisions.

    I like Betty and Glee

and don't see any need to promote one at the expense of the other.  Even if they end up running opposite each other on Wednesday nights there's no problem because I haven't watched a regular television broadcast since the Tony Awards last June.  In the intertubes age why should I let a network decide my viewing schedule - unless it's a live event?

As far as I'm concerned the much bigger problem is the networks screwing around with the broadcast schedules until audiences give up and shows die.  Fox is probably the worst -- the did it to Firefly, Dollhouse, Sarah Connor Chronicles and now, possibly, Glee.   I just read on Ain't It Cool News that after the "sectionals" episode on December 9th, Fox is putting the show on hiatus until APRIL 13TH!!

Oh, and by the way, April 13th is a Tuesday, so even if Ugly Betty moves to Wednesdays, Glee won't be there any more.  Way to screw your audience around, FOX.

    ABC better keep Betty!

I dont know what the hell ABC was thinking when they moved it to Friday nights. If ABC decides to ditch the show why dont they give it a second life on their cable network ABC Family. It would fit right in with the rest of their programs. I really hope that they find something to do with Betty to save it but then again they were the same morons who canceled pushing daises.

    Does it still matter...

In this day and age of Tivo and DVR, etc. does it even matter when a show is on anymore? I almost never watch something "live."

    Dave Doty's picture

    I agree, but I disagree

In principle, I agree.  Not only do I never watch anything live anymore, once it's programmed into the DVR, I don't even bother to remember what day, time, or even network it's on.  I just turn on the DVR and check to see what manna has fallen overnight.  Although having completely lost my mental schedule, it's HELL on me when something happens to wipe the series recordings and I have to A) remember what shows I watch, and B) find them on the schedule to set a recording.

But I also disagree, because Friday as a graveyard is still a fact of TV life.  And as long as Friday night is a ratings death sentence, I guess it does matter.

For me the main reason to

For me the main reason to save Ugly Betty is the story line with Justin. Never before on TV has an clearly gay teen played a flamboyant gay teen struggling with coming out. It is a powerful story that can help millions of young people in their struggle to accept who they are.

    I love Ugly Betty, but...

There is no reason to knock Glee to build it up.  Both shows are wonderful on their own terms.

Another reason to save the show.

I still love the whole *look* of the show.   Their art and set designers never fail to impress.   The visual of the recent butterfly scene is a perfect example. Like the telenovela concept it's based on, I never expected Betty to go on for years and years; yet, as someone who's watched every season, I sense these characters have - or actually need - one more year to get where they're going.  Maybe even half of a fifth season would do.  But ending it now would just seem so rushed and unsatisfying. Like a trip that ends too soon and all one can think about is what one didn't get to see.

If I'm reading correctly, ABC co-produces the show with Silvio Horta's Silent H Productions, Salma Hayek's Ventanarosa Productions and Ben Silverman's Reveille Productions.  Can Horta, Hayek, and Silverman try to take the show elsewhere, if ABC bails?

    Four words

    NOT ON YOUR LIFE

UGLY BETTY still has so much potential and has run for years in other countries to great success.  I am always amazed that the density of entertainment executives, they buy a show and then interfere with it, often distorting the original concept. When the changes then affect the ratings they move the time period - or cancel it out right.

Even without being the gayest show on Television, UGLY BETTY has an amazing cast, strong writers and a real heart.  Too bad ABC doesn't get it.

    That's all I am saying...

    Save Betty!

Ugly Betty is a must in our house and this season matches Season 1 in greatness. The show really has captured the essence of Betty and the writing has been so strong in its plotting and seamless transitions from story to story. Even weaving in newer characters has worked and the acting has been raised even higher in quality. The show deserves 1 more season to bookend Betty's rise and so we are confident she is on her way! Vanessa Williams and America Ferrara have really made this show and kept it going. Michael Urie has been the surprise since Season 1 and Judith Light's addition has really given a reaally great stage actress some fun comedy to do.

    Superior Bahamas Episode

When an episode of Ugly Betty is great it is really Great.

I just caught up with the Bahamas Episode and it was excellent. The visuals alone were outstanding and the show well crafted and expertly written.

There is no show currently on TV that is anything like Ugly Betty. Granted not every episode is a winner but I did fall in love with the characters and the show again in this terrific episode. The gay inclusion was well handled and spot on. Betty continues to be superior and many of the supporting characters are finding their groove. Lots of sexy men in that episode too!

PS: Glad that cult stuff is over....  just wish we could see more of sexy Connor....
