AfterElton Briefs: "Coming Out In The 50's," Bye Bye Buju, Chris Colfer wants a "Princess Diaries" Reunion, and More!

Lady Gaga doing stuff last night at Madison Square Garden

  • Speaking of Gaga, below you can see internet sensation Maria Aragon performing "Born This Way" on today's Ellen. Counting her, Will Phillips, Zach Wahls, and the other young people who've spoken up for equality, I have renewed hope for the future of society.

  • George Washington University has suspended transgender basketball player Kye Allums for the rest of the season because of "concussion fear," but some are crying foul.
  • USA Weekend has a nice interview with Chris Colfer about his love life, winning the Golden Globe, and his determination to get Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway on Glee for a Princess Diaries reunion.
  • As I said, it is a sweet interview, but I almost didn't get past the article's first sentence, "It has been almost 20 years since we've seen a gay teenage character on TV." Wha-wha-wha-what? I think Marco, Riley, Zane, Justin, Moosh, Other Justin, Andrew, Calvin, Billy, Luke (Those are just off the top of my head, I know there are plenty more) might disagree about that.
  • The new issue of Miller-McCune magazine examines efforts to place a referendum on the November city ballot to ban circumcision in San Francisco. It's an interesting pro-circumcision piece, followed a lot of anti-circumcision comments.
  • Below you can see the fascinating video "Coming Out in the 50's," in which three gay teens interview gay elders about their experiences in coming out during the McCarthy era, when there was no visible gay community. Stories include Hadley Hall, an ROTC member who was outed and discharged; Ron Rebholz, who gave up a promising relationship because of fear; and Phyllis Lyon, who helped found the first lesbian organization in America, the Daughters of Bilitis.

  • "Murder music" star Buju Banton is facing up to 20 years in prison after being convicted on drug charges today. Naturally, many of his fans believe that it was all a conspiracy between the gays and the DEA. Because we're BFF's like that.
  • Oh for pity's sake. Below you can the ad that's running in select movie theaters proclaiming that the new "Dr. Pepper 10" is not for women, it's for manly men only. Because it contains 10 manly calories. Well, I know I certainly enjoy a good 10. And they really need to bring back the dancing David Naughton.

  • Finally, my love for Judith Light knows no bounds, and below you can see her "It Gets Better" video, in which she talks about the AIDS pandemic, and how young people can empower themselves by learning about gay history.

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...
