AfterElton Briefs: E!'s "The Daily 10" To Apologize, Stephen Fry Is 90% Gay, and Jonathan Groff Comes Out On Top of NPH
Plus meet Derek on The A List: New York, honoring Alexander McQueen, and Law & Order: SVU tackles a touchy subject.
I was taken in by the Photoshop on the left.
- Over the weekend, I was taken in by the above picture Simon Pegg tweeted out of Sir Ian McKellen marching in protest of Pope Benedict's visit to the UK. Sir Ian was marching, but the shirt Simon had him in on the left was fake. Well, the shirt is fake no more, and you can buy your own. They should send Sir Ian one for free.
- E! has told GLAAD that it will issue an on-air apology tonight on The Daily 10 for the horrible "joke" that guest host Michael Catherwood made about Adam Lambert possibly enjoying prison. No word if Catherwood himself will make the apology.
- Law & Order: SVU is having guest stars Kevin Alejandro (True Blood, Southland) and Michael Gladis (Mad Men) play victims who were branded and sodomized on the sixth episode of the season. I'm trying to have a positive attitude about the ep, but it's tough as L&O doesn't always do well with touchy subject matter. .
- The Glee Season One guest stars have been ranked by their fabulousness, and gay men take the top two slots, with Jonathan Groff edging out the performance that earned Neil Patrick Harris an Emmy Award.
- As long as we're talking about Neil Patrick Harris, here he is discussing Jennifer Morrison's sex life on How I Met Your Mother this season.
- True Blood's Denis O'Hare will be hosting the Ali Forney Center's annual "A Place At the Table" fundraiser. Go, enjoy, and raise money for homeless gay youth. Or he'll rip your spine out.
- In Stephen Fry's new book, he says he's only 90% gay as there have been two women in his life that might have given him pause. The first is Sunetra Sastry, wife of his Blackadder costar Rowan Atkinson, and the second is novelist Caroline Oulton.
- I've taken more than a few swipes at Arizona politicians over the last few months, but this article about Matthew Salmon, the out gay son of notorious anti-gay politician Matthew Salmon gives me some hope for the future of politics. It just a shame a gay son didn't change his parents for the better.
- Adam Lambert is looking forward to the new leg of his tour. Here's the fake private jet they're not using, with the fake custom tail fin.
Oddly, I ran it past an AA employee who said they did leasing with the paint job.

- Michael Petrelis takes "Gay, Inc." to task for their defeaning silence on the arrest, drugging and detainment of Russian gay activist Nikolai Alexseev last week. The New York Times says he was kidnapped to pressure into withdrawing his complaint with the European Court of Human Rights.
- Germany's Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle entered into a civil partnership with his hunky long-term partner Michael Mronz late last week. The ceremony was presided over by Bonn Mayor Juergen Nimptsch. Congratulations!
- On the latest clip from Logo's The A List: New York has us getting to know Derek, who works in model management and is addicted to spray tanning.
- Sunday Times columnist AA Gill has been nominated by Stonewall for their Bigot of the Year after referring to TV presenter Clare Balding as a "dyke on a bike, puffing up the nooks and crannies at the bottom end of the nation." Gill has also been called out by the Press Complaints Commission for his words, the same group that cleared last year's Bigot of the Year, Jan Moir. Hero of the Year nominees include Balding, Gareth Thomas, Joe McElderry, Kath Gillespie Sells and Dr Jeffrey John.
- The fashion world stopped today to hold a memorial service for Alexander McQueen at St. Paul's Cathedral. Sarah Jessica Parker, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss were in attendance as Vogue editor Anna Wintour called him "a complex and gifted young man." Björk sang Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Monday."
- Tonight is the beginning of Dancing with the Stars with out pro Louis Van Amstel dancing with Margaret Cho. Louis wants to make sure everyone knows their call in number to vote for them is 1-800-868-3405.
- How To Punish Your Homosexual Child by the always brilliant Christwire.org. They still sound saner than Tony Perkins.
- The Daily Show has assembled their favorite Don't Ask, Don't Tell clips up on the same page on their website. This excites me because usually when they do this, it means they intend to do something big on the subject and they want everyone thinking about it. Of the ten clips, my favorite is "Dan Choi Is Gay" which sums up Senator John McCain's argument perfectly.
- New York Governor David Patterson vetoed a bill that would have provided rent relief to more than 11,000 HIV/AIDS sufferers by supplementing their rent so they paid no more than 30% of their income. He says he vetoed the bill at the request of billionaire NYC Mayor Bloomberg as it was unclear where the money would come from. If you recall, the bill passed the New York legislature by a large margin after a passionate speech by state Sen. Thomas Duane that may have been one of the greatest speeches made in support of a bill in decades.
- Frank Kameny of the early Matachine Society credits Cuba's roundup of gays in 1965 with the first major gay protests, which later led to the Stonewall Riots and the gay rights movement.
- A new Associated Press poll finds that 52% of Americans now favor marriage equality. But the trick is how it's phrased. They avoided "gay marriage" and instead asked "Should the federal government give legal recognition to marriages between couples of the same sex, or not?" and scored 52% yes. Scoring even better was "Should couples of the same sex be entitled to the same government benefits as married couples of the opposite sex, or should the government distinguish between them?" That got a 58% yes response. Words matter.
