AfterElton Briefs: "90210"'s Trevor Donovan Loves His Story, Scott Evans Bombs On "Rubicon," and Fran Drescher's New Talk Show

Just a few Canadian things I'm thankful for.

  • Today is a special day north of the Yankee border, and so we wish our Canadian readers Happy Thanksgiving, and in the United States it's National Coming Out Day and Columbus Day.
  • GLAAD has issued an action alert to pressure Universal Pictures remove the "electric cars are gay" joke from The Dilemma. This is an issue we first voiced a concern about three weeks ago. But industry insiders say that Ron Howard is a big enough name that he probably has the final decision on what gets cut. Honestly, I'm less concerned about it being in the film than I am about having the joke showing up in a green band trailer for all audiences. So Tom Ford couldn't have a gay kiss in his green band trailer for A Single Man, but you can have a nasty gay joke and still get the okay from the MPAA? Talk about priorities.
  • Last night's The Simpson's couch gag was storyboarded by high-concept graffiti personality Bansky. It was pretty gruesome by any standards, and even I found the cat bit to be a bit much for an 8 PM show opener. That doesn't mean I didn't like it.

  • USC Libraries announced it has acquired the ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives, the largest collection of GLBT activist magazines, documents and footage in the U.S.. The archive will support research and teaching at USC, but will also be available to the general public starting this week.
  • News out of New York Comic Con we're still confirming says the Archie Comic's will be devoting a four part mini limited series to Kevin Keller, Riverdale High School's new gay character. Keller's first appearance sold out and is going to Archie's first ever reprint.
  • Habitat for Humanity will holding a 5k Fun Walk fundraiser in Pacoima, CA this Saturday, October 16. Special guests include 90210's Trevor Donovan, Dancing With the Star's Mark Ballas (of the Joey Lawrence tango), and unnamed stars from Modern Family and Glee, making it the gayest non-gay fundraiser in history.

Speaking of Trevor Donovan, he's a 32-year-old high school student today, and funny lady Dawn French is 53.

He's battling with himself. He's creating his own problems and... there's going to be a lot of external struggles from other people mostly caused by his frustration, his anger, his denial and confusion.
  • Jonathan Katz is a professor at Washington University who famously wrote "In Defense of Homophobia." Now his 22-year-old son Isaac Katz has come out as gay. Isaac has written a beautiful editorial about his coming out, and I hope that with some time his father can be supportive.
  • Scott Evans had his episode of AMC's Rubicon air last night. He was evidently in a lot of scenes, including one involving some rather intimate action. But snicks isn't sure he had any actual lines to say the entire episode. This behind-the-scenes video from the "Wayward Sons" episode shows some of his provocative storyline.

  • Celebrity photographer Mike Ruiz has written a letter to his 15-year-old self telling him that not only does it get better, but in his case "things are going to work out so freaking great, that you wouldn't believe me even if I told you." Bonus points for the picture of young Ruiz.
  • Sir Ian McKellen will be touring secondary schools in the UK over the next three months to share stories from his life as part of Stonewall's anti-bullying effort. Seeing a star of his caliber carve out that much time for the cause it truly great.
  • The Fran Drescher Tawk Show is going into a three week preview on six Fox-owned stations in November before moving into syndication. Fran is incredibly gay friendly and was even married to a gay man for years, so this could be fun.
  • I don't really have a gay angle for this dairy commercial beyond the men in it, which really should be enough. The one in the tan t-shirt will be mine!

  • October 28th at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles Kenny Ortega is staging the Rocky Horror Picture Show to benefit Paul Newman's Hole In the Wall Gang camps for seriously ill children. Starring are Billy Idol, Glee's Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison, HIMYM's Jason Segel, plus Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito, with more performers to be announced.
  • George Michael was released from jail today for his driving under the influence offense after serving half his sentence. Let's hope he just hires a driver from now on.
  • How I Met Your Mother is doing a race to Brooklyn tonight, and E! talked to the cast about who would win that race in real life. Neil Patrick Harris is evidently pretty competitive, but he thinks if you put Alyson Hannigan's baby at the finish line, she'd break the speed of light. Me, I'd be having a sandwich and a nap with Jason Segel.

  • Reader Gareth points us to a court case in Australia where a Christian ministry has been fined $5,000 for refusing to rent their facilities to Way Out, a youth group that works with GLBT teens. The courts said that while businesses were entitled to their beliefs, they had to show that a discriminatory action is required and necessary to practice their beliefs. Not renting a camp to gay teens isn't necessary to being a Christian.
  • The MPAA is now specifying "male nudity" for the first time as part of the reason a film gets a rating. They say they're doing it because parents requested it. But why is male nudity any different than female nudity (a descriptor that has never been used)? I can't wait for the possible gender discrimination lawsuits.
  • Bryan Safi takes time out from his comedy shows to explain Michigan Assistant Attorney General Andrew Shirvell's harassment of out University of Michigan student body president Chris Armstrong.

  • MTV's quirky new movie site Next Movie has launched, and one of the first features looks at the 15 Worst Hairdos In Movie History. Taylor Lautner's long locks may have looked ridiculous in Twilight, but everyone knows that nobody beats Nic Cage for bad hair in movies, and they agree.

The one on the left is just "wow!"

He's a big dude.

  • Adam Lambert has agreed to the standard performing contract in Malaysia which requires him to tone down his show to meet local standard. But the opposition Islamic party is still threatening protests if the show goes on. They think he's promoting the "gay culture." Maybe not promoting it so much as showing how much it sparkles.
