AfterElton Briefs: Richard Chamberlain Drops In On Saul, DADT Enjoined, and Clint Eastwood Talks "Hoover"
Today is the 12th anniversary of Matthew Shepard's death.
- U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips today issued a worldwide injunction against the investigation or enforcement of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. This leaves the Department of Justice 60 days to appeal, which conveniently falls after the election. Many are saying that if President Obama was truly a 'fierce advocate" for GLBT rights, he would announce he doesn't intend to appeal before the election.
- That seems unlikely since the Department of Justice just filed a notice of appeal in Gil vs. Office of Personnel Management which struck down certain provisions of the Defense of Marriage Act in Massachusettes. The DoJ also filed notice of appeal in the related case Commonwealth of Massachusetts vs. Department of Health and Human Services.
- In response to the DOMA actions, Dan Savage will probably be able to reprint his response to the White House co-opting It Gets Better at the HRC National Dinner Saturday night.
- In perhaps the most disgusting lapse in judgment the Washington Post has ever displayed, they allowed Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council to pen a column talking about "'anti-gay' bullying" with the"anti-gay" dismissively quoted, then say that "Christian compassion requires the truth about homosexuality" as if his hate speech wasn't the a contributing cause of these teen suicides. The list of voices calling out Perkins and the Washington Post grows by the minute.
Roses are red, violets are blue. Ian or Silver... what's Teddy gonna do?
- You know that gay joke from The Dilemma that GLAAD is upset about? Believe it or not, it was much, much worse in the original script. It's unknown if the current version is a rewrite, or just Vince Vaughan ad libbing.
In Allan Loeb's screenplay, dated a year ago, Vaughn's character goes on to say "Not homosexual gay ... but soft gay, unmanly gay, quiet and small gay" (in the trailer, the line was "my-parents-are-chaperoning-the-dance gay") and that "if you're a real man ... you don't want an electronic car," which tries to swerve [around accusations of] homophobia while still taking the word as a slur, and at no point is he reprimanded for his stance by any other character.
- Bravo is launching four new reality shows, including Dean's List following out celebrity hair stylist Dean Banowetz. They also have an untitled fashion series around Project Runway fan favorite Chris March.
- OK Cupid likes to take information from their member's dating profiles and draw charts with it. Today is Gay Sex vs. Straight Sex. By their count, gays aren't any more promiscuous than straights, gay men do not prowl for straight men, and 45% of gay men have had five of fewer sex partners compared to 44% for straight men. So there.
- I hope they take better care with their data than this article about men with HIV, which contained quite the typo.
I think her data is still wrong.
- HBO's Too Big To Fail has landed an all-star cast that normally isn't assembled unless the Oscars are happening. Included in the cast is Dan Hedaya as out Congressman Barney Frank.
- Even if some didn't like the title, for the Times of India to publish Matthew Mitcham dives with gay abandon I think is fairly clever and risque for the publication. And Mitcham is tallying up quite a number of interviews to go with his three silver medals, including one again taking retired Aussie Rules Football asshat Jason Akermanis to the carpet again.
- The Gorillaz, who last week worried their nautical costumes for their tour might make them look gay, have done a second interview saying that while no one has asked them for permission to let Glee cover their music, they wouldn't let them anyway.
- In the new Ask the Expert segment from 365gay.com, we cover the question every teenager and college student worries about at one point or another: Am I a Sex Addict?
- Book Chic is covering GLBT literature this week, and one of the authors they interviewed is our own Brent Hartinger, which Brent conveniently forgot to tell me.
- As long as we're talking about dead trees, Dear Author is having a book giveaway of GLBT authors.
- Out speed skater and all around nice guy Blake Skjellerup has penned a column on bullying being more than an GLBT problem. It's definitely worth a read.
- John Polly has a great video recap of The A List that can save you the trouble of watching the whole show, or possibly entice you into watching it depending on your personal predilections. We certainly learned a lot about Reichen's predilections last night.
- Gay Irish hurler Donal Og Cusak is being wooed into a life of politics by multiple parties. Pick the one with the disco ball, Donal.
- To the editorial staff at Rutgers' The Daily Targum: Stop talking, you look worse to the world at large every single day. We're beginning to see just how alone Tyler Clementi must have felt on your campus. Plus, future employers will read this, and it's just as embarassing as the kegger at the Tri-Delt house.
- San Diego's Gay and Lesbian Times has gone out of business. Not only have we lost another voice for the community, it's sad for me because I used to read it every week when I lived there.
- Clint Eastwood turns 80-years-old this year, and personally remembers J. Edgar Hoover. He intends to draw on that as he directs Leonardo DiCaprio in the Dustin Lance Black-penned Hoover. But as for Joaquin Phoenix starring as Hoover's rumored lover Clyde Tolson, that's not happening, "No. I don't know where that came from...didn't he become a rapper?"
- There's been a sequel to G.A.Y.S. (Guys Against You Serving). It's not quite as funny as the first one, but Kate Walsh really sells her part.
- Richard Chamberlain is joining Brothers & Sisters as someone from Saul's past. It's unclear if a friend or a lover. But wouldn't it be interesting if he turned out to be the lover Saul seroconverted with so many years ago? That would be a daring story to tell, and both actors have the chops for it.
- The ninth suspect in the brutal Bronx torture of gay men has turned himself into police after acquiring a lawyer.
- Lance Bass will be hosting the red carpet of the American Music Awards. The nominations were announced today and featured Eminem and Lady Antebellum with the most nods. Lady Gaga received two nominations. Adam Lambert is nowhere on the list of nominees or performers - I wonder why?
Backstage at the AMA nominations - Why is Danny Gokey there?
- City courts have ruled that St. Petersburg, Russia must allow pride parades to proceed. The city has said it will comply with the court order.
And today's Briefs are brought to you by...
