Wiki may be able to help with your list
Wiki list helps and hurts!
Hey thanks for the link! I plowed through that list on Wiki and added a bunch of stuff. It's hard to tell where to draw the line though -- have left out adding things like Japanese anime characters and characters which might be gay but have never declared as such (Ugly Betty's Justin is a good example - definitely a favorite but not on this list.)
Even though the Wiki list is impressively current (Dumbledore is on there!) it also seems to have some holes -- for instance, none of the Noah's Arc guys (or the Dante's Cove guys for that matter) were on the Wiki list. I went ahead and added them above. I'm sure there are still some things missing even with the Wiki stuff added, so if anyone sees anything....
You know what I hate about the Wiki "gay" database?
A: That it's community based and people who have uneducated opinions can just post stuff there.
At the bottom of the page that I linked above there is a Wiki link to TV episodes with gay themes...there's a ton of TV shows listed that have characters in drag listed as gay. A good examples of what I'm talking about is they listed Quantum Leap. Now, I've seen the reruns and there was one or two gay themed episodes but they have "Sam leaped into a woman's body and had to wear a dress in this episode" as drag and gay themed.
Save me from stupid people! That's not "gay"!
Capt Jack and Ianto are not gay

A correction and some possible additions
One minor correction to the current list - I'm pretty sure that Philip Charles MacKenzie's character on Brothers was named Donald Maltby rather than Maulpey.
And, while I probably wouldn't include the 1-or-2-episode arc boyfriends on Will & Grace (Taye Diggs as James, Patrick Dempsey as Matt, Dan Futterman as Barry, etc.), I would probably include Bobby Cannavale as Vince D'Angelo, since he was around for a couple of seasons, and he and Will did wind up together. Then there's Beverly Leslie (Leslie Jordan) - even though he'd protest, I think his long-running "business partnership" with Benjy (and subsequent pairing with Jack) would qualify him as a gay character.
Other possible additions:
I seem to recall a gay teen in a number of episodes of Everwood's final season - a piano student of Ephraim's. I think the character's name was Kyle, and IMDB has a character named Kyle Hunter listed, as played by Steven R. McQueen.
Since Dante's Cove is on the list, the four main characters of Here! TV's The Lair could also be included - David Moretti (Thom), Jesse Cutlip (Jonathan), Peter Stickles (Damian) and Dylan Vox (Colin). Unfortunately, Colton Ford's character Sheriff Trout hasn't exhibited any romantic or sexual interest as of yet, gay or straight - hopefully that'll change in the upcoming second season.
Also, the three Tales Of The City miniseries were initially produced for and shown on either PBS or Showtime, so Michael Tolliver (Marcus D'Amico/Paul Hopkins) and Jon Fielding (Billy Campbell) would probably also fit the criteria.
Maltby or Maulpey
Hey giovanni - thanks for the correction re Phillip Charles mackenzie's character in Brothers. Even though IMDB has it listed as Maulpey, we're inclined to agree with you that it's Maltby and have made the change here. Definitely agree about the four main Lair characters and they have been added. Also the Everwood addition and adding Beverly Leslie and Bobby D'Angelo. Actually, Bobby D'Angelo wound up 25th in our recent readers' poll of the top 25 Favorite Gay TV Characters - so he's definitely a glaring ommission.
As for Tales of the City. Unfortunately, that was a miniseries and we limited this list to characters that made recurring appearances in a regular scripted series so that's why they aren't listed here.
Thank you very much for your contriubtions!

Doctor, Doctor
Doctor, Doctor was I believe a CBS sitcom from 1989 to 1991.
Matt Frewer played the lead Doctor Mike Stratford of a group of doctors.
Tony Carreiro played the role of Richard Stratford, Mike's gay brother who was a college Professor and was a reoccuring character.
Can remember a very good / powerful episode where the two brothers try and confront their father's homophobia and rejection of Richard.
Oh, just looked it up on Wikipedia and Doctor, Doctor is also listed as winning GLAAD Media awards for Outstanding Comedy Series in 1990 and 1991.

What about ....
Father Kieran on Hollyoaks? Not only did he kiss JP, he also told him that he's gay too.
And didn't Coronation Street have a gay storyline too? I'm at work right now and cannot look it up. But I'll have a look for the names tonight at home.
There's also Dr. Carsten Floeter (Georg Uecker) and Käthe (whatever his real name is) from Lindenstraße.
And the gay couple from Il cuore de la ciudad (or something like that, the translation is 'The heart of the city').
And Leo Kraft (Henning Baum) from 'Mit Herz und Handschellen', my fav cop.
For anyone interested

And what about recurring gay characters from sketch comedy shows (The Kids in the Hall, The Tracey Ullman Show)?
Here are a few you overlooked
And a second nod for Christian Campbell as Tim Sherman on THE $TREET back in 2000. He was teased about the size of his cock and in an unaired he came out in drag. His sister played by Jennie Garth, seemed aware of his sexuality but the show was canceled before the character was fully developed.
Speaking of Jennie Garth her husband, Peter Facinelli, played gay in THE PRICE OF LOVE alongside of Jay R. Ferguson as Beau.
Peter Frechette was gay in the 1996-2000 TV series, PROFILER, his character officially came out near the end of the series. He was nominated for an Emmy for his performance as Peter Montefiorre, the man in bed with Richard Weller (David Marshall Grant) in the famous episode from THIRTYSOMETHING.
David Marshall Grant has played gay numerous from originating the role of Joe Pitt in Tony Kushner's ANGELES IN AMERICA on Broadway to AND THE PLAYED ON and Jerry Harmon in the Nicole Kidman re-make of THE STEPFORD WIVES. More recently he has been working as the story editor and writer on BROTHERS & SISTERS. Who says you can't have a career after playing gay. Also on BROTHERS& SISTERS you have Michael Nouri as Saul's lover, Milo Peterman, and David O'Hare as Travis March, Senator McCallister's campaign Manager.
Can we leave out Hal Holbrook and Martin Sheen as, respectively, Doug Salter and Gary McClain in the truly groundbreasking TV film THAT CERTAIN SUMMER way back in 1972.
Some more tv characters
You listed Todd Grimshaw (Bruno Langley) of Coronation Street but forgot his love interested Karl Foster, played by Chris Finch. Then there's Sean Tully (Antony Cotton), who is probably the gay character with the most appearances on Coronation Street. Sean's current boyfriend Marcus Dent is played by Charlie Condou. A former boyfriend, Sonny Dhillon, made a few appearances for a storyline.
In the recent Best.Gay.Week.Ever blog entry, j U d E posted about another UK soap "Doctors" which featured gay characters Dr. Greg Robinson (Ben Jones), Rico Da Silva (Felix D'Alviella), Dr. Oliver Berg (Laurence Penry-Jones), and Tom Devlin (Mark Healy). I watched some of the clips of "Doctors" on YouTube and they're quite entertaining.
Do tv movies count?
I don't know if he counts,
You have a pissed off queen on your hands.
Now you've done it.
I showed this list to some friends last night...much much older friends, ummm...err...I mean seasoned - "experienced", if you will. Anyway, they were outraged that a site that claims to be all about gay tv would forget the couple from Thirtysomething. It's even mentioned in some replies here.
Now that I think of it
there are a couple of Will & Grace recurring characters that haven't been mentioned - Joe and Larry, played by Jerry Levine and Tim Bagley (referred to by Karen as "Mo and Mary"). They're the gay couple in the game night/poker night episodes, with Will & Grace later attending their commitment ceremony as well as their daughter's birthday party. Larry is also the one Grace called on to date Will's dad's mistress. They weren't regulars, but I believe they did appear at least once or twice in every season the show was on the air.
