The Gay Geek (May 6, 2008)

Either there’s a fashionista who really knows their gay comics or a certain space tracker is on the verge of a revival
Well, this sounds like a true combination of gay and geek, The Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is showing an exhibit titled “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy” exploring the “symbolic and metaphorical associations between these fictional characters and fashion”.

I love the idea, especially since, as The Legion Omnicom notes, Dawnstar is one of the inspiring heroes. The only problem — this picture doesn’t make me think of Dawnstar.

I mean, shouldn’t the look of Dawnstar scream 70’s retro-chic in some way?
Also, if you want to check out some photos of the exhibit, Geeknerd has some pix to check out.

Is the experiment over?
This week reports surfaced that The CW's reality series Beauty and the Geek is going on a long hiatus (nothing official, of course; that’s not how Hollywood works) unless producers come up with a twist that’ll make the series feel “fresh”. Ratings were down this season – the season premiere lost half of the previous season's viewers and a quarter of those viewers have bailed since then. It should be noted this season also recieved far less promotion than previous seasons, not even getting the encore airing the show got in the past.

Here's what I'm thinking: if The CW wants to see a fresh take on the show, they could try mixing the gender and sexual orientation mix up a bit. In the last couple seasons, the show has brought on one male beauty, one female geek, and one gay geek.

Beauty and the Geek's Sam, Nicole and Greg

Why not take a real sledgehammer to the formula and mix up the cast beyond one "twist" team? Instead of "beauties vs. geeks" why not give us a twist where pairs of female geeks and male beauties compete against the usual male geek/female beauty combination? And why not throw in a few same-sex pairs, too? That would certainly make the show fresh and it's a twist fans of the show have imagined since the show began.

Sadowski returns
It’s been awhile since I’ve last seen openly gay artists Steven Sadowski’s work but the former JSA artist will be working on the upcoming Avengers/Invaders maxi-series at Marvel and Dorian has scanned a couple panels from the recent preview. Taking a quick glance, I’d say the former JSA artist has still got it:

One thing I can't tell from these scans is if Sadowski's amazing sense of visual storytelling comes through. I remember on JSA, he was the only artist who could surprise me with a last-panel revelation. He just knew how to lay things out so that my eye just wouldn't glance ahead and spoil the surprise before I read the prior panels.
