News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

The Gay Geek (June 12, 2008)

Think Pink Lady in satin tights:
We’ve been called “list obsessed” here at AfterElton and The LA Weekly’s Topless Robot blog certainly got my attention with a list of “Ten worst superheroes to ever appear on TV”. CBS’ failed attempt at adapting the Giffen/DeMatteis Justice League tops the list. I've long wanted to check out that failed Justice League pilot (along with Bette Davis as Madame Sin) and I’ve often wondered if the show can be as bad as its reputation (particularly since all the bad reviews I’ve seen don’t discuss how the comic its based on is more Tick than well, Justice League).

Justice League cast Gossip Girl dad Matthew Settle as Guy Gardner

On the other hand, every list inspires a list of what’s missing, getting me to think about other bad superhero shows. Fox’s failed Generation X pilot comes quickly to mind, if only because I was looking forward to seeing a live action Emma Frost (especially with Finola Hughes in the role) and was disappointed to see her not live up to her usual comic fierceness. Plus there’s the whole thing of putting a non-Asian actor to play the Asian-American Jubilee.

Generation X

And then there’s Automan, where Desi Arnaz Jr played a programmer who accidentally creates a computer-generated crime fighter. Besides its so-bad-its-good quality, Automan sticks in my gay pop culture memories for an episode where Laura Branigan appeared, and for the time when Automan went undercover as a male stripper and managed to drive the audience wild despite not having a ripped physique to show off.

Automan

Man from Atlantis gave us Patrick Duffy in a tiny swimsuit but also gave us that ridiculous swim and utterly forgettable plots. On the other hand, it gave us Patrick Duffy in a tiny swimsuit.

Man from Atlantis

I remember really, really trying to like superhero Britcom My Hero when I spotted it on BBC America. A sitcom about a superhero family has plenty of possibilities but the jokes all seemed so obvious and irksome.

My Hero

And, of course, there’s Manimal, a show so bad even in my younger days before I had any taste I turned the show of midway through and did my best to forget the experience.

Manimal

What do you think? Does Justice League (if you've seen it) deserve the top spot? What bad superhero shows would you say was missing from the list?

okay, Lyle...you've officially won my heart.

by mentioning Laura Branigan (my 2nd favorite singer) and her appearance on Automan. For a refresher, here you go

I have seen Justice League, and it's really bad, which is why i love it...and Mathew Settle was hot! what about the 70's live action tv version of Spiderman? I loved it when i was a kid, but watching it again was jaw dropping.

visit my personal blog!...NOW!

Well, you...

reminded me that one of my favorite Laura Branigan songs was a Stock Aitken Waterman number. And you mentioned Misu America from Battle Fever which is one of those memories I never thought I'd see anyone else recognize...

Not Alone

No Lyle, you're not alone. I found out about the new Sims expansion pack late last week and have steadily been getting giddier and giddier since. I'm nearly to the point that I can't go out with myself in public because I embarrass me so badly. GIDDY!

Your Forgetting

One of the worst Super Hero shows ever, Black Scorpion, a Sci-fi network original.. Oh dear god I still have nightmares.. For those of you who can't remember follow the link...

Roger? Corman?

OMG, I am so glad this show aired during a period when I owned no TV and had to watch TV at a "video bar".

That Justice League pilot

That Justice League pilot was all-around horrible! Now, what about Streethawk? I haven't seen that one in ages, although I loved it as a kid.

What about Birds of Prey?

Ugh...Batgirl in a wheelchair, Batman and Catwomans daughter and mousey psychic girl. Sooo bad. Its only redeeming quality was Shemar Moore.
Lyle Masaki's picture

Birds of Prey...

actually was number ten on the list I linked, though I disagreed with the reason why it was so terrible. I loved the concept (save for the Huntress having super powers) but realized the show wasn't going to be watchable when they spent the first fifteen minutes (okay, maybe it was two, but it felt like fifteen) explaining the backstory instead of incorporating it into the dialogue.

Batgirl in a wheelchair is an amazing idea in the comics, but the show didn't seem to understand how to handle a hero who was entirely cerebral.

Is there a name for a fetish for men in masks?

After seeing that photo of Matthew Settle I think I might have it.

Drama Queen, an all yaoi

Drama Queen, an all yaoi publisher in Texas, has apparently also gone out of business. Their books were really beautiful and most were "harder" stories featuring mature-looking guys and cutting edge stories, including the classic "Lies and Kisses."

Anyone else remember this one

Anyone else remember this one, The Phoenix ?

Seems it only lasted about 4 or 5 episodes but I do recall it. Alien astronaut has to find his missing partner. From either 1981 or 82. Its male lead and the male leads from Manimal / Man from Atlantis should be filled for me in the other blog, missed coming out clues from the 80s.

There was also a show in the 80s, Otherworld, pretty good ...almost the same idea as Sliders, family moves from different world to different world each week. However would not count as a super hero show.

Oh, and Snicks, is this the Spiderman you mentioned ? Vague memories of it, would have been, what, 9 yo at the time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUcktiQxC9Q

Yep, I remember this...

...The Phoenix- 5 episodes in 81 and 82 starring Richard Lynch, one of the most prolific guest stars that gets killed during the 70s and 80s. I loved him, creepy, blond, gravelly voice. He was in a campy vampire movie called (duh) "Vampire" in 1979 which I am not ashamed to say sits on my movie shelf. He was also in Galactica 1980 for 3 episodes as Xaviar, a bad German dude.

I say we take the warning labels off everything and let nature take it's course.

I remember Otherworld...

I remember really liking it at the time, tho some eps are now in 'so bad its good' territory (the one where they discover the bubble where men are slaves to women stands out for its camp factor and abundant beefcake). Still, I wish that show got more of a chance.

Justice League & Birds of Prey

I have the Justice League pilot on video tape (!?!) adn it is so, so, awfully bad. I don't know, maybe I'm misremembering...I'd give it another try but we no working VCR anymore...oh well...not too upsetting! Birds of Prey was interesting, and I think, much better than Smallville (which is still on????), aside from the Tom Welling beefcake... and yes, it definately had troubles, but it seemed to be finding its' footing much more, right before the end...oh well, again. And I also quite enjoy the Sims. But only for periods. Every couple years I'll go 'ooh, what's out for Sims?' and buy every sim expansion I find, and play for a month, then I lose interest...oh well, for a third time.

Mutant X, JLA

This one ran for 3 seasons in syndication and was a pretty bad attempt to clone X-Men for the tv audience.

I've seen the Justice League of America pilot. If it had come out in the '70s, it might have been consider pretty good but it came out in 1997, and for that time, it was terrible.

I remember Black Scorpion and it was crappy too. The live action tv series, The Amazing Spider-Man, starring Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich in the Sound of Music!) was incredibly campy and cheesy but for its time period in the late '70s, it was fun.

There were also the two Captain America tv movies in the '70s starring Reb Brown. At the time, I thought they were kinda cool, though now, they'd probably be considered really cheesy and lame. I never saw the 1990 direct-to-video version starring Matt Salinger but its rating on IMDB is even worse than the Reb Brown efforts.

I actually thought Birds of Prey was decent. Certainly no worse than Smallville.

For fans of superheroes on tv, ABC Family just debuted a new series called "The Middleman", starring Matt Keeslar ("Urbania"). The show is being presented as a comedy. Think "The Rocketeer" meets "Get Smart". First ep was ok but it needs to get better to survive longterm.

I thought Automan was hot

I thought Automan was hot when I was a kid - and Manimal (must be the jawline). Whatever happened to Wonder Warrior and Captain Wonder, the male versions of Wonder Woman...? http://scifihunks.blogspot.com/
Richard Ashcraft's picture

Yes, they were pretty awful

What was so strange about the JLA pilot was how they wasted a mostly good cast (the guy who played the Flash was pretty bad). Green Lantern using a helicopter blade to fly was just tacky beyond belief.

Actually the Justice League animated series on Cartoon Network has some major plot problems in virtually every show. Lots of destructive fighting and wild characterizations. The worst episode had to be when criminals wasted their time having the female super-heroes battling in a cage instead of turning all of the JLA members into slaves. Gee, if I could control the world's greatest heroes by sending messages through their ear pieces, I think I might do that instead of watching a stupid cat fight. Of course, I am a gay man, so my choice is obvious.

Now I love My Hero. Granted, it's stupid, but George's comments on the human condition just goes to show how stupid earth beings really are. I really loved the Christmas episode in which Janet complains that you have to spend X-mas with people you hate. And George promptly invites everyone that she can't stand.

The Shadow live-action 1959 pilot was awful to watch. No Margo Lane and it had a weird mentor for Lamont Cranston.

The Superboy TV show from the 1980s is pretty bad. First they changed the actor playing Superboy. Then they kept changing the situations from season to season.

Shazam/Isis does not hold up well, though it would have been interesting to see Mark Harmon play Captain Marvel as C.C. Beck originally wanted. I found this out from Bostwick Jackson at a sci-fi convention.

Mr. Terrific and Mr. Nice are available on youtube. Only the very brave should give them a look. Also take a look at the Wonder Woman TV pilot in the 1960s from the Batman TV producers at youtube. Absolutely jaw-dropping.

The Greatest American Hero was a washout. And let's not forget--though try as we might--Who Wants To Be A Super-Hero? Though I'm a fine one to talk. I auditioned as Inside Man in Dallas for season two, lol.

I forgot Misfits of Science

This lame X-Men wannabe series actually starred Courtney Cox as the telekinetic character who wanted to be normal. Give me telekinesis anyday and a bus ticket to Las Vegas anyday. Otherwise, the show is only memorable in which Dean Martin's late son died shortly after it was cancelled. And the black guy who could shrink in size was gay and died of AIDS early in the crisis.
