Morning Meme: "Captain America" Not Amazing, Simon Doonan Promoted, and Trevor Donovan and the Three Bears

Maria Elena Walsh,
Argentine author and poet (and according to Balbbeando, proud lesbian) has
passed away at the age of 80. She wrote for
television, children and
adults, and was politically active against the dictatorship in the 1970s. Our
thoughts are with her friends and family.
Relativity Media has announced they intend to release Immortals, a battle between Zeus and his humans against King Hyperion and his evil army, on 11-11-11. The film stars hunky Henry Cavill, along with Kellan Lutz, Luke Evans and Stephen Dorff. That’s a lot of beefcake.
According to CNN, Florida is the only U.S. state without snow right now. 49 out of 50 have snow on the ground. And climate change has doubters?
When I started looking into gay super heroes yesterday in relation to Conan’s Flaming C, it was pointed out to me that last week DC'sTasmanian Devil (not to be confused with the Looney Tunes version) had a one shot comic. This Devil isn’t battling Bugs Bunny, and he’s gay.
Sir Ian McKellen took
time to respond to reports that he held out so long on The Hobbit over money. It turns out it’s more about time. He’s had
his life on hold for this movie for two years, and at his age, wasn’t sure he
wanted to commit another two-five years to the project.
The first GLBT History Museum has opened in the United States. Located in San Francisco's Castro District, it was built with the support of corporate partners like Walgreens and Levis.
New Zealand McDonald’s have heard the complaints and have begun lifting the blocks on their WiFi on GLBT news
sites. They claim their objection wasn’t with the news, but the ads. I can
almost sympathize, because I was worried about a Manhunt ad on the beginning of
a video I used the other day. Some things just don’t fit a business model.
My old high school mate Morgan Spurlock has a new movie called The Greatest Movie Ever Sold about product placement. I’m curious about the film, and Morgan brings his success home to this small town, so I feel I have to support it.
What a difference 35 years makes on how a gay hero thwarting an assassination attempt is treated.
Toy Story 3 took home a Golden Tomato Award as the best reviewed movie of the year. In other news, the only major critic to log a bad review of the movie, Armon White, disrespected nearly every actor and movie as he hosted the NY Film Critics awards, including Annette Bening for her win for The Kids Are All Right.
November 9, 2012 is the return of Daniel
Craig as 007.
When I first saw the pictures (particularly the third one) of an affectionate Stephanie Seymour and her 18-year-old son on the beach, I admit I was a little confused. But yesterday, he responded to the press speculation, which was more than a little tacky for public discourse, and I discovered he’s openly gay. So to that, I say welcome to the gayborhood.
The official Oscar pre-show has been expanded to 90 minutes, though hosts haven’t been announced yet. I’m not sure I can get enough TVs in one room to mock that many red carpet broadcasts at once.
You have no idea how old I felt when I heard that Tia Mowry (Sister, Sister) was pregnant.
I’m not at all sure that we can blame the Arizona shootings on right-wing rhetoric alone. Though I do find it telling that the president of Fox News directed his talking heads to “tone it down” in the aftermath.
Republican Pete King
wants
to ban guns within 1000 feet of members of Congress. On Tumblr, a smart man
asked “what about guns within 1000 feet of me?” Why is a Congressman’s life so
much more valuable than mine, or a nine-year-old girl.
Simon Doonan has been “promoted” away from his position as Creative Director at Barneys. That’s a seismic shift for the company and indeed the street views of New York.
Everything you know about drinking? It’s wrong.
James Franco is planning a surprise art performance with Kalup & Franco on Golden Globes Day.
The first trailer for Captain America: First Avenger has been delayed indefinitely. Reportedly, the “footage isn’t amazing.” Obviously they didn’t just film Chris Evans walking around shirtless for 90 minutes. That would be amazing.
An original script for Modern Family has been unearthed (in the second season, how deep was it buried?), and it has their original casting hopes. Claire was to be played by Lisa Kudrow, Jay was Craig T. Nelson, and Tony Hale and Andy Richter were Mitchell and Cameron. I think we can all agree we dodged a bullet there.
