Morning Meme: A Visit To John Waters' Home, Perry Moore Is Still a Hero, and Adam Lambert and Sauli Hit the Red Carpet

John Waters has always been one of the more interesting figures in queer culture for me, possibly because he has always embraced the edges of popular cult
ure. And like me, he worries about gay culture becoming too mainstream. ""'I miss it … I’m for gay marriage. I don’t want to do it, but I certainly think people should be allowed to, and I wouldn’t vote for anybody that would be against it. But at the same time, why do we have to be good now? Why can’t we be villains in movies?' He says it’s good that more people are able to come out of the closet, but adds: 'I wish some gay people would go back in. We have enough.'"
You have to wonder about the future of our democracy when people like Charles J. Kelly, a former Baltimore Police Department lieutenant who wrote the department's use of force guidelines reviews the pepper spraying at UC Davis and observes "at least two cases of "active resistance" from protesters. In one instance, a woman pulls her arm back from an officer. In the second instance, a protester curls into a ball. Each of those actions could have warranted more force, including baton strikes and pressure-point techniques. 'What I'm looking at is fairly standard police procedure."
Then there's presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, who thinks that the child labor laws are outdated. "These schools should get rid of unionized janitors, have one master janitor, pay local students to take care of the school." That's right – poor kids should clean their own vomit up at school, as young as 9 years old.
Breaking Dawn
failed to break the box office opening of New Moon, but still managed to suck $139 million out of people's pockets in a bad economy. Happy Feet 2 must be feeling sad with only $22 million for an opening weekend.
Those "real Americans" NASCAR fans booed First Lady Michele Obama, Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden and military families when they appeared at Homestead-Miami Speedway to raise awareness for military families.
Ronan Farrow, son of Woody Allen and Mia Farrow, has been named a Rhodes Scholar. Ronan graduated college at 15, and started Yale Law School at 17, so high achievement is nothing for him.
Kendra Wilson thinks that it's very impressive that Perez Hilton went from the biggest bully in Hollywood to a nice guy. Personally, I'm not so quick to forget all the evil, and his kindness sounds fake to me. But maybe I'm wrong – is Perez a good person now?
Hunter Hill, the partner of late author Perry Moore has established four scholarships for GLBT youth to be awarded annually the writer's name starting next year.
Is anyone reading the comic Escape from Terra? It sounds like it's got a very Ayn Rand-bent on self reliance, but this review says that the mining colony welcomes "immigrants of all abilities, races, religions, sexual orientations and gender identities" so I'm curious as to what people think.
I generally find Megyn Kelly to be the best part of Fox News (a low bar, I know), but she's now done a story citing a non-existent article of the Constitution which tries to float the idea that Justice Kagan needs to recuse herself from the Affordable Care Act appeal.
Salon has done their list of the Sexiest Men Alive which is full of slightly less conventional choices than People Magazine. Their top man is Gregg Breinberg of PS 22 on Staten Island, but it was their #13 that caught my eye with Andrew Luck. What can I say – I'm on a beard kick.
Truth Wins Out ha
s decided how to respond to Marcus Bachmann's collections action for missed appointments in their sting operation: Bring it. Let's do discovery.
As long as you're viewing their list, take a look at their discussion of putting that list together, with a gay man and a straight woman arguing over what's sexy.
Finally, Cyd Zeigler over at Outsports really loathes Tim Tebow constantly forcing his religion on sports fans. "We hear people say they don’t have a problem with gays as long as they’re not flaunting it. Well guess what: I’m OK with Tim Tebow as long as he’s not flaunting his religion. But he can’t help it. He appears in national TV commercials to promote his religion. He makes a spectacle of prayer before, during and after the games."
