"Girls Will Be Girls" Review

It helps that Girls Will Be Girls gives these strong actors something to do. Not all of the jokes work, and occasionally the movie’s low budget origins peek through.

But the “asteroid” scene, when Evie finally reveals the secrets of her sordid past, is one of the most interesting I’ve ever seen in any movie, low budget or not. And the “reveal” at the end of the sequence, when we see proof that Evie may not be the drag queen we assumed she was, is as funny as it is shocking.

Meanwhile, many of the project’s other scenes are just as inspired.

I almost bust a gut laughing during the movie when Coco finally reunites with “Dr. Perfect,” her supposedly perfect lover, and they kiss for the first time while a wonderfully sappy song intones “Dream Lover.” But almost immediately, Dr. Perfect wants her to "service" him. She smiles shyly. He grows more persistent, refusing to even kiss her until she goes down on him. Finally, they’re openly wrestling, she trying to kiss him, his hands on her head, pushing her down to his crotch — all to the beautiful strains of the suddenly ironic love song.

The webisodes, meanwhile, are even more tightly written than the movie. Ji** Party” includes a scene (co-starring The Sarah Silverman Program’s Jay Johnston) that is far too raunchy to be repeated here, but has the words “comic genius” running through my head.

Girls Will Be Girls won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. But throw a splash of whiskey into my chamomile, because, to my surprise, I guess it's mine.

"cutting off my toe with a nail file!"

There is certainly a very wide gamut of drag queen representation in films (almost every one of which I find magical to one degree or another), but Girls Will Be Girls is one of, if not the smartest. I'm quite attached to this film for emotional reasons, and am happy to see that it's finally getting a wider and wider recognition. Plus, I think Coco Peru is tops.

I love all these actors

I too loved Coco in "Trick" as the anti-Tori Spelling.

I've seen Varla in Boston and Ptown many times. Her shows are smart, hilarious, and she happens to be a talented, classically trained singer.

Jack Plotnick had a brief, memorable role on Buffy, and his "Astrophysicist!" scene from this movie makes me laugh and laugh and laugh...

(And I use "actor" the same way I use "doctor" - I don't say "doctress" because it's a woman!) (Though maybe I should? There is such a thing as an ogress, after all...)

Brilliantly done...

I saw Girls Will Be Girls a few years ago at a film fest in Manhattan and was blown away.  The camp, though over-the-top at times, is wickedly funny and brilliantly executed by all three actors.

The one-liners abound, and you'll find yourself looking for opportunities to use them yourself.

"I'll get your duffle bag... oh, I'm sorry, it's just your ass."

"I've had more children pulled out of me than a burning orphanage."

DEFINITELY a must-OWN!

Drag Rocks

It's sad that Logo decided against putting Girls Will Be Gilrs on as a sitcom.  They were afaird that it would cast gays in a bad light, as if people who hate gays discriminate good gay sterotypes from bad ones.  It was a great film, I thought very smilar to old school John Waters.  Am I the only who thought his productions went downhilll after finding mainstream acceptence? Drag has and will contiune to serve a very important role in the community.  Just look at the International Order of Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and The Imperial Court, I can't think of another gay group or orginization that have been there or done as much as either group.  We could also go back to the berdeche, two spirits and cross dressing priest and priestess of all preChristian societies.

Also if you are searching Youtube Jeff has started putting up his Varla vidoes under the account JTRoberson.  I love Eating Out with Varla Jean.

This movie is classic

I'm not sure what kind of classic, but classic nevertheless.

And Brent, the next time Dina Martina is in town (Seattle anyway), I will buy you a ticket. Michael can come too, but AE will need to pick up his ticket ;) .

Dina is a not your regular Drag Queen and her shows are, hmmm, well...
not easily described in a comment. (That is the best I can do)
