Boxers or Briefs: A Gay Look at the Evolution of Underwear in the MoviesMeanwhile, independent cinema increasingly gives openly gay men a chance to feature their own unapologetic, and specifically gay, sensibilities in movies like Quinceañera (2006), East Side Story (2006), the Boys’ Shorts (1993) series, and even an actual gay teen sex comedy, Another Gay Movie (2006). When it comes to boxers or briefs, is it any wonder what these gay directors tend to choose?
Another Gay Movie
What will men in the movies be wearing under their clothes in the years to come, and how will directors be showcasing it? Whatever the answer, you can bet that gay and bisexual moviegoers will be watching closely. Submitted by on Tue, 2008-03-04 21:46. |

the evolution of underwear?
AfterElton covers popular culture not
maybe it was funnier @ 4 am
I so know how that goes! Half the time something
LOL, well it IS a site about
Undies
P.S. I've uploaded this pic 10 times, and it's still not my avatar. was'up?

Thanks so much.

Undies. And Michael Jensen.
I enjoyed the article! I (and hopefully other readers) come to this site for reasons that differ from those of, say, a visit to the New York Times or NPR. That said, I love that Michael Jensen is in the shadows, caring about this ol' site enough to speak up with us mortals! (It doesn't hurt that we get to see his delighfully geeky mug!)
Okay, on the Undies...Does anyone remember "Miami Blues" with Alec Baldwin and Jennifer Jason Leigh? It was around 1990. Baldwin looked pretty sweet in those lil' pink 'kinis. :) I'm pretty sure I turned gay the day I saw that...
Geeky? Lurking in shadows? No-o-o-o-o....
Gollum...
...who wore that loincloth type underwear and nothing else throughout the trilogy...hmmmm if only they had Aragorn wearing that....
Seriously - a great article - perked up a pretty dull Wednesday here at the office for me. Thanks!
Praise for Geekery and other corrections...
I prefer the term "nerd" but I'm told that's offensive and that geek is, well, chic. You and Brent are my role models for the relationship I'll never have! (Don't worry, bitter is not contagious.) Now, go! Lurk with confidence, you delightfully quirky, engagingly eccentric nerd. (And keep up the good work--both of you!)
Thanks
What a refreshing break from it all. I enjoyed your nice choice of clips. I have a picture etched in my mind of watching Tom Cruise's nice round ass in his briefs as he bent over the bathroom sink in Top Gun. The young Paul Newman in his white boxers was also nice. I sat through a movie Gregory Smith (Everwood) was in called "Near Grace" just so I could see him prance around in his orange briefs (that's right they were orange). Now if only we could get a documentary made on the subject of men's underwear through the ages(maybe there already is one) and get it played on IFC I would be happy.
Thanks Brent, Lets have some more lighthearted but revealing topics.
Love the article
Brent, I uploaded one of my favs to youtube
OH MY GOD! That Scott Wolf
OH MY GOD! That Scott Wolf video just fused my brain.
Wish I'd know about that one for the article...

If I remember correctly,
and that's always questionable, Scott Wolfe has a scene in the film GO where a policeman is taping a wire to his thigh that might be worth checking out also...couldn't find it on You Tube.
I like the article; nothing can get me interested in history like underwear.
Well actually....
...taken from a sociological standpoint (yes, and I am a geek and proud of it), there is a great deal of meaning in choice of underwear. It's literally fraught with culture, which seems positvely absurd for an artticle of clothing that we don't usually see. But yes, here in the US, undergarments say a lot about sexuality, age, even class. And most of us thought the article was just fun!
By the way, thank you to the author for using the phrase "gay and bisexual sensiblity". As a bi man, I appreciate the pointed effort at inclusion.
I dunno
I don't think very much about underwear. I just wear what's comfortable for me.
But I must admit it's kind of a turn-on when I'm at the store and some hunky guy infront of me reaches up to get someting and exposes a nice stomach with his boxers just above the waist of his pants.
Oh no, I have a fetish!!!
Don't trouble yourself Doctor -- I'm a celebrity, I'll write my own prescription.
Boxers or Briefs?
I much prefer briefs. They are so revealing and the package of a man just makes my knees weak. They leave just enough to the imagination to excite and boxers are too grandpaish. I hate when I see gorgeous men in boxers. The male body is to be seen in all it glory and not hidden by something that looks like shorts.
Men in briefs are more sexually enticing to me than a man in boxers. I hope that briefs come back since it shows a man's body off much better.

Freaky Undies
Who doesn't remember Alice's Restaurant when Arlo Guthry jumps up and down in his briefs? I don't because I never saw it, well, untill I found it a second a go when I was surfing You Tube for Alices Reataurant, the sone. The scene is pretty hot, if you like pasty hippy boys. I mean, who doesn't?

.
I like variety
both in the guys I scope out, and their underwear.
Yes, briefs are more revealing. But on the other hand, boxers offer more access to what's underneath. There's more hand room...
I've said WAY too much, haven't I?
Oh, and mikey, don't feel bad-I usually have the same reaction when I catch a glimpse of the undies wasteband peeking out.
How do we talk about boxers and leave out Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting? I can't be the only one who wanted to follow that treasure trail on his back, can I?
(Sigh. There I go again, offering Too Much Information.)
Question: why was the clip from Another Gay Movie dubbed in Spanish?
Scotty the hottie...
snicks, on behalf of the rest of us, thank you for that link to Scott Wolf.
What about
