Review: "Ice Blues" brings gay couple front and center

Some of the action sequences in Ice Blues might be a little too pedestrian, and the resolution to mystery itself isn’t exactly mind-blowing (though the movie includes a nicely unexpected twist at the end, revealed to the audience, but not Strachey).

And as in previous entries, the production values are bare-bones. The “ice” of the title seems to come and go. There’s an occasional establishing shot of snow, though in most of the actual scenes, it seems to be raining (even in a scene at the airport where a plane is supposedly grounded by non-existent ice).

But after four movies, I feel a genuine affection and a real fondness for these characters. More, please!

You'll love "On The Other Hand, Death"

This series has been great. I love what Chad Allen and Sebastian Spence bring to the roles of Donald and Timmy.

I'm quite fond of the series

I know some ppl find the movies a bit dull and the mysteries not so mysterious but I am a fan of the series.  Ppl loved Murder She Wrote and I solved those mysteries in the first 10 seconds...that's not really the point.  It's just entertaining television with a regular, non-stereotyped gay lead role played by a gay man.  Chad Allen is worthy of a leading role and we know he ain't gettin one on network TV anytime soon given the stupidity of their fears so this series does do him some justice.

It's worth checking out simply for the actors, the humor, and the interplay between them.

My biggest problem with this

My biggest problem with this series is that Richard Stevenson cannot seem to write a good plot to save his life.  "Third Man Out" had me so annoyed at Jack Wetherall's character that when the twist at the end was revealed, I vowed never to watch it again (and I haven't).  I'm still not sure if his character was supposed to be sympathetic or not, but he seemed to be portrayed as at least partially heroic, which was a huge miscalculation if you ask me--and he was much worse in the book.  "Shock to the System" was better, but the ending made no sense at all.  The cast and crew of the movies make me long for something better; they're definitely worth better core material.  Even the production values are better than I would expect for TV movies.  What they should do is take the same actors and characters and put them in an all new story, not something that Stevenson wrote.  No offense to the guy, but I remember reading the books all the way back when they were written and I was just coming to terms with being gay, and even in my blind desire for gay fiction I always felt disappointed and a little cheated.

I do like Nelson Wong as Kenny, although I haven't seen the latest two movies as my area doesn't carry here! anymore.  Any word on a DVD release?  I still consider myself a loyal fan of the movies, if not the plots.

A great review of Ice Blues

This was a great review. I just watched Ice Blues. I love this series of films because of the characters and the reclaiming of the genre. It's fun to have an ongoing development of the characters from movie to movie. Chad Allen and Sebastian Spence are terrific as devoted couple Don and Tim. And it's hard not to love Nelson Wong as Kenny.

On the Other Hand, Death

I've been trying to find any information regarding this movie on either Here!TV's website and on blockbuster.com and I can't seem to find any mention of it.  Even my cursory look on Here's message board doesn't even list it by name.

The review says the movie was released two months ago.  It is listed in Wiki, but there's minimal information.  Any idea where I could find it?  Or any information on it?

That being said, I have Here! TV and did watch Ice Blues yesterday and I must say I loved watching it and can't wait to actually own it.

On the Other Hand, Death

@ Samuel G I found info on the Donald Strachey series here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Strachey This lists info about all that is part of the DS series. Also, a brief bit of info is at IMDB here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1130987/ Remember, GOOGLE is your friend. Tons of hits there.

Best of the series

'On the Other Hand, Death' is the best of the four by far.  We watched Ice Blues over the weekend and neither of us thought it was good.  The plot was a real mess and I just didn't care what was happen.

I wonder if 'Death' having a co-writer is why it was so much stronger.

I'm curious about that too

What made DEATH so good? It wasn't just Margot Kidder (who was great). I thought the script was much tighter than the other entries.

I love these movies

I absolutely *love* the Donald Strachey movies, for all of the reasons Brent mentioned.  I'm not able to watch them on Here!, though, so I'm waiting (very impatiently) for On the Other Hand, Death and Ice Blues to come out on DVD.  I'm dying to own Kiss Me Deadly on DVD as well, speaking of Here! movies.  I hope they come out soon.

Ice Blues

I just finished watching Ice Blues and it was great but what is it with these two films (on the other hand, Death and Ice Blues) and the ATWT attitued with no kissing. The first two films Donald and Timmy kissed quite a few times and then there were only pecks on the cheek and hugs and at the end of Ice Blues a very pathetic kiss that looked almost like a side of the mouth kiss.

I hope the next one they do show more affection and they don't go the ATWT route. I even wonder if Sebastian Spence wanted no kissing anymore. If this is the case he should be replaced for the next movie.

If anyone (this means you Flying Monkey) knows why there is no kissing in these movies please make it known.

What?

I can`t believe this! Why would they do this on a gay channel?Sebastian Spence seemed very comfortable with the intimate scenes in the first two films.I really hope this is not the case.

Are you sure about this?

I distinctly remember lots of affection between the characters, even if no actual kissing. There's a scene in the hotel room when they're clearly frisky, isn't there?

You're right, Brent

I just finished watching Ice Blues, and while there weren't any "tonsil hockey" kisses, there were plenty of moments in the film showcasing the intimacy between the two men. As is appropriate for a couple that has been together as long as Don and Timmy, the fevered face-sucking has given way to more subtle forms of physical affection - the sweet moment in Timmy's office before the Senator interrupts, Don's enjoyment of Timmy's "adrenaline rush," and the obvious comfort level that leads to one partner intuitively knowing when his man needs an embrace.

I think the thing I enjoyed most about Ice Blues is that it was mainly focused on the Strachey/Callahan family. The previous films seemed to skimp a bit on the goings-on in their relationship and in Don's office, so I was very glad to see the emphasis shift away from guest stars this time. We got some nice character development for both Don and Timmy, including how they each feel about the work the other does, as well as some wonderful moments for Don's adorable assistant (and hopefully future partner) Kenny. This one is definitely a winner in my book - I'm definitely looking forward to future installments!

Okay series of movies

Even though the acting is sometimes weak, and the plots even weaker, and the lighting and camera work is unflattering to some of the minor characters, I enjoyed watching all of these movies.  Mainly for the interaction between Timmy and Donald, which is sweet.  I found their romantic scenes together to be like those of Christian and Olli in Verbotene Liebe.  Started out with heat and passion, then wound right back to little affectionate pecks and hugs.  *sigh*

What I want to know, though, is what happened to their cute little puppy?

I'm not much of a movie critic...

But I thought this was a great movie.  I think it was the best in the series, maybe because with every movie there comes more depth to all of the characters.  I especially like Donald's assitant played by Nelson Wong.  (ok, he's kinda cute).  Anyway, I think ths was a good movie.  It may not have had the suspense of 88 minutes, but it was a pretty good movie.

Kisses between Donald and Tim

I just watch On the other hand and ice blues todays and i like them both.

Like you guys i love Chad and Seb in dontim roles. I think that story line getting better than the third man out.

Just a question : I notice that Kisses between DonTim is less sweet than in Third man's out. I mean affection is very good acted and very tender but kiss lost its magic.....

In "ice blues" the end kiss was a lightly touch from the tip of the lips and i was quiet disapointed by this kiss....

Did you notice that too? or have i high expectation?

I just love Donal Timmy couple

I just recently watched all 4 Donald Strachey movies and on my opinion it was a best US mystery movies I watched for the long time. I love mysteries, but most of time I prefer to watch classical mysteries, with good actors in it. It's sad but Hollywood hardly have many actors, who can really play. This movies was a big surprise for me, because they were very good done and the actors was excellent. I also liked that the main character is a gay PI, who have long lasted partner. Donald & Timmy relationship in this movies are the best parts of them. They are so loving, tender and so much touching than any relationships I saw on TV. Most movies directors think that sex scenes could maid any movie watchable and that's' why they forget that love between 2 people is not just sex. It's the small things like caring about your partner, take care about him or her when they need it, be a crying shoulder and hug them when they break down. That's what I saw in this movie. It was very good done in very tasteful way. Donald and Timmy is a dream couple, the people who really love and respect each other. They really revive my faith in people. Actors Chad Allen and Sebastian Spence created such a great couple. The chemistry between 2 of them was palpable. When you watching this movies, you can hardly believe that this actors just playing their parts  and not really in love with each other. Good job done.

What`s the twist

at the end, revealed to the audience, but not Strachey?I`m not sure I get it.
