The Week in Film: Oscar Bait

And for last, but surely not the very least, it’s Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. Nothing animated about this…

... unless you count Nicolas Cage. I’m sure he does a very good job like the little excerpts say in the trailer, but for some reason, in my mind, he’s always playing a crazy, unhinged, psychopathic scene chewer. I’ve always liked dark material, but a good cop turning bad is something we’ve seen many times before, and I’m not sure how or if they can make this fresh or put a new twist on it. Then again, it’s acclaimed Werner Herzog. So, who knows? Val Kilmer co-stars.

BITS AND CRUMBS

For those of you who are excited like me for Alice in Wonderland, here’s the poster to whet your appetite until the movie comes out next year.

And here’s another pic, a spread.

And in the “why I haven’t heard about this sooner” pile, there’s apparently a movie coming out next year called Burlesque. And if I had to take one guess, I’m going to say that it’s going to be about Winnie the Pooh, isn’t it?

Kidding aside, I’m sooooo looking forward to this. I mean, Cher, X-tina, and one of my faves, Kristen Bell are all in this! Ahhhh! *head explodes*

Excuse me while I put my head back together. It may take me a week. So, see you then! That is if I manage to put my head back together and get my eyes working again.

Mr. Fox

When I first saw the trailer for "The Fantastic Mr. Fox," I was excited.  Now I don't know if I'll be able to see it-- it might be hard to enjoy a cute, funny movie when I know that the director supports the freedom of a child rapist.

Pirate Radio

This is called "The Boat That Rocked" here (in New Zealand) and we got it on DVD a couple months ago! Very unusual for us to get a movie before the US!

I highly recommend it, everyone in that movie is really funny and I thought the whole thing was just awesome (as long as you don't expect it to be realistic in any way).

Gotta mention...

I saw Pirate Radio last night and there's quite a bit of queer content in the film.

The only woman on the ship is an out and proud lesbian whose love life is explored as explicitly as any other character in the film. She's much loved by everyone on the boat and never ostracized as a result of her sexual orientation.

On top of that, another male character admits a youthful gay experience in a "never-have-I-ever" game and none of the characters on the ship react with anything but curiosity.

All in all, it's a very queer-inclusive and friendly film.
