The Best Summer Movie Preview Ever!
Believe it or not, summertime is nearly upon us, and with it the loudest, most profitable and most popcorn-friendly movie season of the year. In this May-August romance, we take a look at the films of gay interest headed our way in the warm weather months, from gay-friendly blockbusters to indie fare to must-see documentaries. May: Outrage, X-Men, and that gay Robert Pattinson movie The gay movie summer actually started a week early with the release of The Informers (April 24), the film adaptation of bisexual author Bret Easton Ellis's collection of nihilistic, '80s-set short stories. While the gay content isn't huge (there are several bisexual threesomes and Chris Isaac plays a father who thinks his son might be gay), the plunge into the tanned, cocaine-fueled despair of 1983 Los Angeles is classic Ellis (or, as Roger Ebert describes it, "a soap opera from hell, with good sets and costumes"). Featuring spot-on turns by Mickey Rourke, Kim Basinger, Winona Ryder, Amber Heard, Jon Foster and the late Brad Renfro, this one might appeal to both those who miss the excess and style of the era and those who aren't old enough to have survived it themselves.
Hugh Jackman as Wolverine But Ray-Bans and sports cars aside, the gay summer movie season truly hits the ground running on May 1 with the highly-anticipated X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a.k.a. "107 Minutes of Hugh Jackman's Chest in Various Degrees of Exposure". Joining the gay-friendly Aussie is a cast of hotties including a worked-out Liev Schreiber (Sabretooth), gay-fave Ryan Reynolds (wisecracking Deadpool), Lost's adorable Dominic Monaghan (Bolt), Friday Night Lights' Taylor Kitsch (Gambit) and the always-excellent Danny Huston as William Stryker. With so many gay-friendly folks in the cast, it's probably safe to say that this is testosterone-fueled action that won't backhand its gay viewers (yes, 300, we're talking to you) ... and offers some serious eye candy, to boot.
Javier Beltrán and Robert Pattinson in Little Ashes Once you've had your fill of battling beefcake, give your eardrums a rest on May 8 with the quieter, gentler and decidedly more twee Little Ashes, which details the odd romantic triangle between artists Luis Bunuel (Matthew McNulty), Salvador Dali (Twilight's Robert Pattinson) and Federico García Lorca (Javier Beltrán).
