Gay
Drummers Rock
(page 2)
by Robert Urban, September 22, 2005 At age 17, gay drummer Grant Hart was co-founder and co-leader of one of rock’s all time great bands--Hüsker Dü, with Bob Mould. Sadly, they were two great songwriters who just couldn’t work together. The famous friction and bickering between the two led to the band’s breakup, after which Hart formed his own bands The Swallows and then Nova Mob. He’s also produced some releases of his own. Hart still performs sporadically, and has shared the stage with such varied celebrities as as Patti Smith, Charles Plymell, Philip Glass and the late William S. Burroughs. Hüsker Dü made several albums for the fabled "SST" label including the beloved Zen Arcade, New Day Rising and Flip Your Wig. Signed to Warner Brothers Records in 1985 they made two more albums, 1986's Candy Apple Grey and the band's second double album, Warehouse. In addition to drumming and songwriting, Grant also produced all the visual art for the band, including all the record covers, some of which won awards and helped secure the band’s artsy following. New York City’s Mike Fass (aka Drummer Bear) is a well-known professional freelance musician, whose encyclopedic knowledge and vast experience in all styles of rock and pop have made him a popular recording session and “hired-gun” live-in-concert player for a variety of recording and performing artists. He specializes in 1960s-70s popular music and tribute acts, and has gained a solid reputation as a life-saving last-minute replacement. Mike Fass specializes as a "power hitter", using heavier gauge rock sticks and hitting primarily with the wide or "bat" end of the stick. This gives the drum kit the thunderous power needed to cut through amplified instruments no matter how high their volume level. It also imparts a real aural presence and bottom-heavy punctuation to the beat. Mike’s playing style has been praised by the UMA (United Music Associates) as "...the energy of Keith Moon with the power of John Bonham." Some of Mike’s favorite drummer inspirations include Mel Taylor of the Ventures, Matt Betton of Sonny & Cher, Ron Tutt of Elvis, Nigel Olssen of the Elton John Band, Bobby Figueroa of the Beach Boys and Dennis Bryon of the Bee Gees In the 1980’s, Mike was a major force behind the creation and popularity of one of pop music's dance genres--Freestyle. Using real drums instead of drum machines or “loops”, Freestyle blends the melodic, harmonic and structural sensibility of straight pop music with the experimental patterns of electro funk. Over the
years Mike has played many of New York City’s most famous rock and
comedy clubs, and has performed with and/or shared the bill with such
notable stars as Pat Benatar, Richard Belzer, Joe Piscopo, Andy Kaufman,
Paul Reiser, and Billy Crystal. Born in Detroit, raised in Puerto Rico, and currently based in Raleigh, North Carolina, drummer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Dave Montana began his musical journey very early in life, playing a toy drum set at age four. He’s been percussionist for marching bands and was a member of the long-lived, popular synth-pop group No You Turn. No You Turn enjoyed much success after the release of their single "I Still Love You" which was remixed by world known remix artist Pablo Flores (who has worked with Madonna, Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera and others). While still playing with NYT, Dave played bass for Taone and went on a tour of Cuba with them in 1991. Dave has already recorded several songs for his next project; one of them is included in the Woobie Bear Music compilation Bear Tracks 3. In the meantime, his debut album Such Things As Love And Pain peaked at number 2 on the Outvoice Top 40 in May of 2005. For Dave, this has been a dream come true, a representation of his journey and what he is all about. |
