Gay
Drummers Rock
(page 3)
by Robert Urban, September 22, 2005 Washington, D.C-based. Peter Moffett has drummed for the bands Government Issue, Wool, and most recently the indie-rock, post-hardcore Burning Airlines (who split up in 2002). Upon forming Burning Airlines from his previous band Jawbox, guitarist/songwriter J. Robbins welcomed Peter Moffett into the band, referring to him as “a badass drumming wunderkind and one-man music school”. Moffett has appeared at events for the Chesapeake Bay Bears. In addition to drum kit drumming, he also plays modern, avant-garde percussion at more serious, “legit” music recital events. California’s Bil Yoelin is drummer for The Gay-Gays, the amusingly camp pop tribute band who’s sacred mission in rock is to preserve the memory of their favorite pop heroines--The Go-Go’s--by channeling through their queer selves classic Go-Go’s songs including the hits “Our Lips Are Sealed”, “Vacation”, and “We Got the Beat”. In 2003, after a two year stint as drummer for the popular Los Angeles queercore band Best Revenge, Bil and Gay-Gays co-founder guitarist Matt McLaughlin ditched the headache and frustration of collaborative songwriting and instead opted for the fun and outright tartness of creating a full force Go-Go’s tribute band made up of 100% gay men (hence the name Gay-Gays). An experienced percussionist, Bil has eagerly adopted the role of Go-Go’s drummer Gina Schock. After being featured in a Los Angeles Times cover story, (including the now-legendary full-band in towel turbans steam-room cover shot), offers started pouring in from everywhere. Since then the Gay-Gays have Go-Go’d at such famous venues as The Knitting Factory, Spaceland, Cafe du Nord, the Troubadour and the House of Blues. They’ve headlined various GLBT benefits including the Marriage Equality California fundraiser with Bow Wow Wow’s Annabella Lwin. 2005 has already brought a 3-song Demo and music video. California gay drummer Chris Ohnesorge helped create the power pop trio Ex-Boyfriends. As their press release proclaims, “Armed with a truckload of stick-in-your-head songs about their own ex-boyfriends and girlfriends, love gone wrong, addiction, drama-addled friends and the need for you to dance at their shows, Colin, Peter and Chris are poised to be everyone’s favorite Ex-Boyfriends”. As the ever wise-cracking Chris says, “We love the handclaps, descending bass lines, three part harmonies and the beer. We've been playing for about two years now. We are finishing up the recording of our first full-length album but Colin needs to smoke a few more packs before we get the vocals just right. It should be done in the spring. Seriously. We'll be releasing our CD early next year on Absolutely Kosher records”. Chris' favorie things include “rocking, rolling, tattoos, mutants, Amazing Amazons, super heroes, watching celebrities self-destruct, drinking cheap beer, comic books, snacking, being faggoty, DIY hair dyeing, black nail polish, girling it up, dogs with bees in their mouth and when they bark they shoot bees at you”. Gay or straight, drummers everywhere are on music’s endangered species list. They are becoming more and more scarce as the technological “advancements” of drum machines, sequencers, digital percussion software and fake MTV rock culture encroache upon their musical territory. The next time you find yourself at a live music event that includes a drummer, take a moment to let them know they are appreciated. |
