News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

gay journalists

new member post. :)

i found this website through this fitting article:
"Life as an Openly Gay Journalist: CNN's Thomas Roberts"

after looking around here a bit, thought i'd sign up and post -- hoping to hear from some other men in the media profession. it was fitting too that today's homepage looks back on 'the best year ever' for gays -- because i do not feel this winning streak in 2007.

like roberts - i too am an anchor. i don't have half his good looks... but i am very good at my craft and have been a journalist for 25 years. at my job -- should upper management discover who i like to date - very gently i'd be shown the door. let's not get into what is legal or illegal -- this is a work-at-will nation remember "we just don't need you anymore" is a good enough reason for layoff.
what did stand out for me in roberts' case was his committed relationship... this point does tend to empower people.

so, what does one do in the media world who cannot risk being seen at a gay bar or on a gay personal ad?

it is important to note: despite the issue of forced privacy, i truly enjoy my job. it is challenging, evolving, stressfull, and rewarding. it pays the bills too, which is a rare statement to make in the journalism profession.

nonetheless have thought about switching jobs to a more open environment... but simply cannot afford an 80% cut in pay.

so, 2007 came and went, and nothing has changed in this chapter.

anyone else in a similar situation?

if you can relate - what was your work around?

A Backward Year

I agree with you.  2007 has been a down year for gay people.  From my perspective things have moved backward.  AOL and parents.com got rid of their gay blogs.  Tim Hardaway made his hateful comments about gay people and Snickers created a homophobic ad campaign.  Thomas Roberts was let go from CNN after coming out.  The press worshipped Mike Huckabee who hates gay people.  ENDA got shot down in Congress.  Hate crimes against LGBT people are up.  Their are less gay characters on TV this year and it's been going down for years.  Wal-mart backed out of a gay commerce organization.  Rosie O'Donnell was savagely attacked by the media for every word she said.

Just a note on the title, BEST.GAY.YEAR.EVER is

a riff on my weekly column BEST.GAY.YEAR.EVER! and isn't meant to imply that this was in fact the best gay year ever as much of our year end coverage noted in the year's lowlights.
