News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

CBS' online Daytime Forum gets it wrong again, but it's not just Luke and Noah.

While the Fan Panel results of which story keeps bringing viewers back to ATWT has not been posted yet as of this writing, the rest of the main page has been updated and at first glance I was excited to see that this week's poll (from today through 1/18) is about Luke and Noah; however I am frustrated at the framing of the question and made me think twice about voting at all. Here's the link in case as well as the question as posed.

Do you agree with Luke and Noah’s decision to move in together?
Yes. They are young and in love. Let them be happy.
No. It’s too soon. They should not rush into anything.
Not sure.

I understand that creative writing not easy and what is obvious to us may not have not ocurred to the writting team as they may be trying to churn out product to keep the show going, esp. with the strike; however.....

So many of us seem to be in agreement that Luke and Noah's "happiness" has nothing to do with whether they are allowed to "move in together" (as currently being framed on the show, which means living with Luke's shotgun carrying grannie) or having them become the next Gwen and Will, who received special legal treatment and were allowed to marry before they were of age!

The show itself put forth the idea of them moving into the dorms, a really cheap and already existing set. I would throw them a bone of not sharing rooms (nor think that they should) to keep things light  and go from not as much as sharing a third kiss to acting like a couple who have dated and know one another so well (including morning breath, having gone to second base, or even spent one night in one bed) to contemplate the next step of sharing quarters.

When AE has a chance to interview the creative team, I would be interested in learning how this "moving in together" is going to work. Will Luke and Noah be allowed to share a room upstairs? Or was the Gnat and Faithless will share another room reference an indicator that Noah (who's been sleeping downstairs) will get a separate room upstairs? If they are not sharing the same room, then why not the dorm?

If I were straight fan or a parent, my answer would certainly be they should under no circumstances live together. Even as a gay fan my answer is the same, but would I be voting against them by essentially responding no to what the poll frames as their "happiness?"

It's only a soap, but the answer is so easy. Send the guys to the dorms with other college age people on the show. They can keep they guys chastity belts in check via roommates and can even introduce any meledramtic weirdness that they want to now possible impose on Noah. Can't they wait for this neediness to take place after they truly act like a couple. The they can have anything as simple as a smile from Luke to another guy turn Noah into Col. Meyer is they want to be nasty. If they don't they can introduce the normal jealousy that may take place when we experience what may be arrested puppy love.

Guillermo, you make a lot of

Guillermo, you make a lot of great points.

I'm a writer who covers soaps and it is strange how most of the shows want to shove their teenage or young adult characters into really advanced adult storylines. They have a young straight female character on the show who's married and baby crazy and I'm fairly sure that she's not old enough to drink yet.

When the story has really worked, thus far, it's done a great job of showing the guys longing for each other and getting to know each other. It would be way more realistic to show them dealing with typical issues at this age, rather than becoming the 40something committed couple (and I am closing in on 40, so I don't mean that in a negative way - but they should have an age-appropriate story).

I worry that they will be coupled and become very affectionate - but also asexual. The show's production company (Proctor and Gamble) is clearly getting cold feet about showing them kiss.

Coupling and affection on ATWT

Thanks. I share your concerns. I want to be as mindful of the many challenges that arise in writing, esp. in a medium that needs to come up with 5 episodes a week no what.

With regard Luke and Noah, they are missing the boat that they themselves put forth as dorm life would be a perfect next step, thus extending the shelflife of an extremely popular young couple. ATWT already has cheap dorm sets and several characters that are supposed to be going to college or could be, thus creating the setting for many umbrella storylines.

There are certain steps that writers have a difficult/impossible time backing away from. This is likely to be one of them. In an interesting change of pace they could have used Luke and Noah to reframe how they handle young adults as the show has lost generations via age inappropriate clumping.

I already handed them a freebie: Noah's roommate has a little crush on Luke and makes it very hard for them to be together for too long. Luke's gaydar has always been non-existent so they can address Noah's jealousy if that's where they want to go first. I'd like to see Luke and Noah continue exploring one another as best they can and maybe even wait until the summer to be able to make love. It can even be old-fashioned but not with the false ringing narrative stops that they will have to pull out of their hats if they go ahead as planned.

I think that the writers need new eyes to help reframe two characters that they have done such a great job with in both casting and for the most part, writing for. I am not sure what's worse, if they put them in the same room upstairs (which I can't fathom can be the case) or living like wannabe incentuous brothers. It's a bad vibe.

Luke and Noah in the dorms

Hi, Guillermo -

The wording of the poll made it useless for me, for all the reasons you elucidated. I love your scenario of having Luke's roommate having a boner for him, with Luke oblivious and Noah jealous.

Maybe someone with a little common sense -- you? -- will get to write the show someday.

Good luck with your writing.

Noah at the farmhouse

I am having problems seeing the move into the farmhouse as bad. I don't recall seeing the dorms so I can't speak to that. As far as college age kids I only recall the one guy that was with Luke when Noah got jealous. The two guys that invited Noah to a party and the girl who asked Noah to dance. These were all walk-ons(if that is the correct term). The show seems to be pretty tight fisted when it comes to budget and that is being kind. Casting new roles does not seem to be their forte.

I think it is possible that bringing Noah into the farmhouse would work as an alternate to the dorm. There are stories they can tell as Noah becomes part of the household. Of course they will not be sleeping in the same rooms. Couldn't the story be about Noah's need for family and the effect it has on Luke and their relationship? Hopefully the intent is not to have Luke and Noah settle into the farmhouse as a romantic asexual couple. I would make the living arrangement and lack of privacy bring back the sexual heat and longing the earlier episodes had as they try to find the time and place to have sex. They could show Noah's reluctance to leave his surrogate family when Luke wants them to leave. I see endless possibilities. If the sponsers are backing off then I see nothing that can be done that we are not already trying to do. I am going to try my hand at writing some fanfic and see if I would be ablt to take the farmhouse idea somewhere.

They are definitely romantic and popular but not treated equally. This is just the way it is right now. I remain hopefull that the idiotic people that run the show will at some point give the audience what they want as oppoosed to what they think we want. So far the decision making does not seem to be based on anything that makes any sense to the average viewer. Whatever the amount of writing involved if there is a long range storyline it should not be a problem. Right now they seem to either slap together stories as fillers and others that drag on and on.
