I've been reading After Elton for a few weeks now. Really enjoy it!
I was wondering (for my first topic) if any non-Brits know about the tv series Shameless? I only started watching it the other week even though it's been quite big here for a while. I was struck by how the gay characters are written, very natural, and within the working class setting of the show, surprisingly frank. I feel that queerness is treated by most people (of whatever persuasion) as a rather bourgeois subject matter generally, so I found this quite refreshing.

Any thoughts?

rephrshing
I find the British media quite refeshing. they take a common occourence, such as gaynesss, and work it into thier everyday shows on the telly as an everday occurance.
I do aadmit I have been to england and most people are more homophobic than we are, but they aere more willing to admit it's there aand acccept as a neccary part of life.

Shameless has gotten some
SHAMELESS SEASON 5 - IAN and MICKIE
I am a huge!!!!! fan of Shameless which has to recurring fabulous gay characters and 2 (sometimes more) lesbians and yet get's so little coverage here. It's surprising to me because Ian is such a complex and layered character and his story has been handled with such fabulous writing.
Both Ian and Mickie are very sexually active (no more or less than your average late teenage /early 20's boy) and Ian's just had his first real "boyfriend" (which, ahem, met a bump in the road) but still...
I just love, love, love this show's handling of gay characters over all and I'm wondering if there's any chance folks on AE will be covering it more closely in the future.
Any word?
