What about the OSCARS...??!!

OK so ... I know that there aren't any gay-themed movies (or even movies with gay subtexts) among the major Oscar noms this year ... but ... gee--don't we gays LOVE the Oscars? The FASHION! The DRAMA! The PARTIES! (Husband is a party-pooper and doesn't want to celebrate the Oscar Ceremony like I do ... but a good Oscar party complete with a ballot for guests and some gawdy Oscar statuette for the winner is such FUN!)

And ... maybe I'm just totally LOST among all the Jack and Ianto and ATWT drama that I'm clueless about ... but why hasn't anyone posted on this topic yet? (Someone feel free to point me to the post I've obviously missed while talking about Scotty vs. Jason and everything else!

So no Brokeback Mountain this year. But at least there's the GORGEOUS and CAMPY Cap'n Jack, er Mr. Depp gracing the stage (nominated for a musical!) ... Mr. PLEASE DEAR GOD LET ME AGE THIS BEAUTIFULLY CLOONEY ... The splendor of Atonement ...

      OK that's all I've got.

Oscars 2008But STILL! It's the Oscars!
So who does everyone think is gonna win?!! That's what I really wanna know!
PS: I know this is lazy and also a little boring but Blockbuster has a great little ballot already done ready to print and make available at your Oscar fete!http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.128.0.0/media/academyAwards2008/printballot_2008_Full.pdf

Oscars 2008

OK I don't know what I'm doing.
That image is way too tiny and isn't where I meant for it to go.

So at least I'm not a POSTING virgin anymore; maybe I'll get better with experience?! haha

Another try at the image:

What about Daniel Day-Lewis

An amazing performance in There Will Be Blood. although not a "gay themed" movie, he did play a gay thug in My Beautiful Laundrette. I somehow don't see Johnny  Depp or Clooney ever doing anything like that.

Plus he's goregous.

tdubtx's picture

Day-Lewis should prevail...

I agree with you Staples. His performance was so intense. Almost too intense. He's very picky about his roles but when he does choose one--LOOK OUT...!

I don't see Clooney in a gay role...but Depp? Shoot, if the guy will wear eyeliner and act all campy, the guy totally would do a gay role (if it had some teeth)...maybe not a thug though... LOL

Thanks for the opinion!

Depp

Depp did play a crafty prison drag queen in Before Night Falls... and Bon Bon could have taken Day-Lewis' gay thug any day of the week!

ehhhh

"but ... gee--don't we gays LOVE the Oscars? The FASHION! The DRAMA! The PARTIES!"

^ eh, i know quite a few people, gay and straight, who don't love the oscars. turns out, the BBM loss really confused people about the true win of an oscar. a lot of people don't take the oscars seriously anymore and could care less.

with that said, i would say maybe ATONEMENT could win BP...but heck....the damn thing could go to some other movie that barely got good reviews. never know, never know...

tdubtx's picture

OK! OK! Not all gays love the Oscars!

OK first of all...and no one on here really knows me to know this...but my "...don't we gays LOVE the Oscars..." comment was tongue-in-cheek. I know all gays don't (hence my comment about the Husband's complete disinterest in the telecast altho the 15 yr old and I have managed to suck him into American Idol!) ... I was just trying to be funny. [TRY HARDER!] LOL
I don't think There Will Be Blood was well-liked enough to knock off No Country for Old Men ... Atonement was gorgeous and sweeping (and OH that no-CGI Dunkirk scene and its music have to rank among the most beautiful cinematic moments of all time .... link here if ya wanna watch...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtpKBDCKZxs&feature=related).
But Juno could be the pic that upsets everyone. And I would be OK with that.

Thanks for the dialogue even tho you're a little disillusioned. I get it.

me?

"Thanks for the dialogue even tho you're a little disillusioned. I get it."

^ are you saying I am a little disillusioned? or was this another tongue in cheek moment?

i just wanna make sure i am not taking anything the wrong way.....

tdubtx's picture

Uhm, maybe foot in mouth instead of tongue in cheek?

Your comments did give me the impression that you are generally disillusioned with the Oscars. Presumptuous of me to say so, I guess? SORRY if I offended!

 Perhaps I could have said,

"It's regretable that circumstances have caused people to become disillusioned with such an established event in movies. Nonetheless, thanks for the dialogue."

...cuz that's more like what I meant.

Friends? ;)

Zero interest in Oscars since...

the Academy caved against BBM a couple years ago.  I haven't paid any attention to them since that body blow.  Of course, it hasn't helped the Academy's chances of me watching when I haven't cared at all about any of the nominations since then either.  Yeah, I took GREAT offense a couple years ago.  Can you tell?  :P

Through the eyes of Oscar. Does he see progress?

Hey Dane (and others)...

I understand the gay community feeling outraged at the Oscar's "slight" of such a great piece of film-making, especially considering it went on to become the most honored film ever, winning more accolades than the 2nd and 3rd most lauded films combined.

Perhaps it's very well documented that the Academy denied BBM Oscar glory because of a hypocritical, non-progressive stance on gay themes. And perhaps Ang Lee's statue was merely a token award meant to satiate the gay community. Much like Halle Berry's and Denzel Washington's Oscars were awarded just to show how much progress they had made in the issues of race. [NOTE: TONGUE FIRMLY PLANTED IN CHEEK.]

This posting may make me the scourge of this site, but I'm gonna say it anyway. Is it possible that the Academy truly was split on this decision? Because it's not like it lost to a sh*t movie! Crash was truly a fantastic commentary on our times. Very well made. Creative. Tremendously well acted. Beautifully produced. And above all: COMPLETELY HONEST, just like BBM.

I'm glad my sons saw BOTH films because both present the truth about our culture and not in a flattering way! It's rather a shame both flicks couldn't share the award as I think both were deserving. Not one over the other just because it was gay-themed.

Honoring a movie that depicts the way we tend to interact and exhibit prejudice (using race in Crash versus sexual orientation in BBM to illustrate the theme) is hopefully a way to promote the overall message the film contains.  Finishing a strong second does not necessarily render BBM's message ineffectual. (I keep thinking about how many people were exposed to the pain so many of us have faced by seeing that movie...whether it won an Oscar or not.)

OK so...I'm not trying to negate the personal sense of wrong-doing you or anyone else feels by the big gay snub two years ago. But--this is just me--I continue to enjoy seeing the progress of our society (and a very narrow, closed community of people called Hollywood) through the eyes of that little golden statue. Inch by inch, we are all--black, women, hispanic, gay--getting there.

And that makes the Oscars worth caring about.

I agree...

....Crash was an amazing movie. BBM sits in my collection, but I am really glad I saw Crash, too. I think the Academy was really split. They've done lots of weird things in the past but in this case, I could understand. Two great movies, and BBM got all of the publicity it needed to go down in history as one of the great movies of all time. Just my two cents.

I Drink your Milkshake!

I haven't seen all the movies nominated for Oscars, but I think either No Country for Old Men or There will be Blood will receive the Academy Award for Best Picture.  I saw Juno and No Country, but not TWBB (the hubby saw it and liked it a lot.  It looked too depressing and violent for me, esp. after just watching No Country).

I thought there would be more hype and marketing for the Oscars, especially since the writers' strike just ended and the ceremony is going to take place, after all.  Perhaps I'm just stuck in my coccoon world of DVR and Netflix, and haven't paid attention to the commercials.  But I think it's my partner's monopolization of the television with CNN and MSNBC always on the tube that has something more to do with it.

DOES ANYONE CARE ABOUT THE OSCARS?!

LOL

CRASH was a laugh riot

As in a laughably pretentious, eye rollingly cringe inducing R rated afterschool special. I expected to see Sandra Bullock pop up on the screen afterwards and say "racism is wrong, and it affects us all. for more information, visit your local public library".

Okay...so...

...how DO you think people should express that racism is wrong? Do you have a better script?...have you produced a better movie?... or do you think people should just shut up about it altogether? When this movie came out, many people were banging on about how it insulted people's intelligence. This is a nation where people seem to need their "intelligence" insulted to get the point across. I welcome every attempt to "get the point across".

I am not being facetious, I am seriously asking.

thanks for answering

Hate to say this, but I am a little intimadated by you all. I almost didn't respond, but I loved TWBB and Day-Lewis so much I just had to.

I have seen all of Day-Lewis movies except for Gangs of New York. I've been following him since Laundrette.

I'm not sure how one can be too intense. I love that about him. I also love that he's so fearless.

Hmmm you may be right about Depp.

brian's picture

I agree

There Will Be Blood was absolutely, jaw-droppingly brilliant. So were many of the other films nominated this year. The group overall was a bit dark, which seems to have turned a lot of people off, but it's a solid year. It's a shame that some comedies and more unconventional choices didn't make it to the final list (how about Jennifer Garner in Juno? I'm not a fan and I thought she was amazing. Or Waitress, for Pete's sake? She was amazing!), but I'm still rooting for the stellar filmmaking behind Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Atonement, Sweeney Todd, There Will Be Blood, No Country, and more.
