The Wire Spoilers***SPOLIER ALERTS***
EDITOR'S WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS PIVOTAL PLOT DEVELOPMENTS FOR THE NEXT EPISODE OF THE WIRE. DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW ANYTHING.
I would warn you with a spoiler alert, but aside from the fact that I don't think anyone really cares because most of you probably don't even watch The wire, the title of this thread says it all.Yes, it's true.Omar Little is dead. This saddens me because he was definately one of the best, if not THE best, gay characters of all time.(BRIAN KINNEY DOSEN'T EVEN COME CLOSE TO OMAR.DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON JACK MCFARLAND)I will include details, so if you don't want to know what happens, there's your SA. Let me start off by saying I didn't watch the show at first either.I only dipped in it a few times just because of Omar, but one day decided, for some reason, to watch a whole episode. It was the season premiere of season 4.The next thing I know i'm marathoning the whole fourth season because I had to know what happens next, and by the time I was done I couldn't wait for the upcoming fifth season premiere.Initially, I thought it would be too gritty and depressing for me to watch, but it's actually a really good show once you give it a chance. In fact, the writing and plot style remind of Veronica Mars.Like Veronica Mars, despite being one of the best and smartest shows on TV it had low ratings, but managed to make it to it's fifth and final season. If you haven't been following, let me get you up to speed.Last season Omar and Renaldo, his boyfriend(this hot spanish guy with beautiful lips) rob Marlo Stanfield, a ruthless drug kingpin, during a card game.He won't let it go and tries set Omar up for murder.Omar gets arrested and sent to jail where he demonstrates why he's no easy target when another inmate attacks him. He's calls in a favor from a detective and gets cleared on the condition that he gives his word that he'll give up his killing ways. He, again with his boyfriend and a few others, steals a shipment of drugs that supply a bunch of drug dealers including Marlo Standfield. He then sells it back to them and retires.Season 5 starts and Marlo wants Omar bad.In an attempt to get to him he has Butchie, Omar's friend, adviser, and confidant tortured and killed. The next time we see Omar he's walking along the ocean in what looks like Mexico with his boyfriend then gets the word about what happened, and has this look with a mix of pain and rage on his face. He comes back to Baltimore as a man on a mission, knockin' motherfuckers around, and killing anybody who gets in his way, but Marlo's waiting for him and baits him into an ambush. The last few episodes is where it takes a down turn.Omar gets into a shoot out with a few of Marlo's soldiers, but escapes by jumping out of the 6th story window of an apartment building, breaking his leg in the process. That doesn't stop him from doing what he came back to do.Even with a makeshift crutch and a limp he roughs up some more dudes, robs and terrorizes Marlo's corners, and kills many of Marlo's enforcers. This brings us to Omar's anticlimactic end. I should point out this epsiode hasn't actually aired yet. This season they're showing episodes a week in advance on HBO ON DEMAND, so this is actually this sunday's epsiode. After hitting another one of Marlo's corners in broad daylight, Omar goes into a little convenience store. He asks for a pack of smokes, stands there waiting for a minute, and then says "oh, and let me get one of them...."POP!He's catches one to the back of the head. The shooter.....a little boy who had to be all of 7, or 8 years old.My heart stopped in that moment and I had so many thoughts running through my head that the only thing I could get out was "what the fuck just happened?" First, it was one those scenes where even though it was quiet and the character was doing something pretty mundane you just knew something was about to happen like they were setting you up for something.....a twist, or a surprise.....and boy was I surprised.Even going into that store I had a split second where I thought something was gonna happen, but was still so shocked at just how fast the whole thing happened.I was like "that's it?he's done?"I can't believe one of the baddest dudes on that show got taken out like that.I mean after everything he's done, been through, and survived on that show, including that jump out of that window, they're gonna wrap his storyline like this?Even if he wasn't going to get Marlo in the end I just didn't see it happening this way.Needless to say i'm pretty disappointed Just like that he got snuffed.Omar obviously wasn't exactly a role model, but he was kind of like a hero in my eyes as far as gay characters go.He may not have been as good looking as some, even though he pulled a few hotties over the course of the show, or as popular as others, but he was definately something far more interesting and different from the cliche and stereotype ridden characters i'm used to seeing. He was badass. He was respected and feared.Characters like Omar are rare.Talk about complex, 3 dimensional, and entertaining to watch.....even though he was a stick up artist and he killed people he was still somehow more likable than Brian Kinney. Even AfterElton didn't regularly update you as to what was going on with Omar like some other shows with gay characters. It's a shame that more people didn't watch this show, but I guess if it's not another reality show, or has an ensemble cast of pretty white people people aren't interested, but I digress.Oh well..... Rest in peace, Omar. You will be missed. Submitted by homoguy563 (1226 points) (194 posts) on Tue, 2008-02-19 17:18. |

F*** YOU DAVID SIMON
Omar dies at the hands of Kenard. Omar doesn't even pay him any attention because he's so small. All of this build up to a show down with Marlo and we get nothing. Below is a copy of what I just wrote about this over one AINT IT COOL NEWS.
Oh please don't give me that realism code of the street bullshit. The Wire is a fictionalized show plain and simple. David Simon could have killed of Omar anyway he wanted but he chose to give a big FUCK YOU to the fans of the show. Oh and I thought No Country for Old men was pretentious bullshit and the ending was crap. I bet I know what he was thinking that he would show everyone that no character is safe. blah blah blah. Been there done that. Actually keeping Omar alive would have been going against the grain and bold if you ask me. At least let him go out with his boots on. If were going to talk realism let's do it. I live in Baltimore. Lived here all my life. There has never been a drug organization that put 22 bodies in any vacant houses. Never! We've never had a serial killer on the lose in the city either which means we've never had a reporter or a detective fake a serial killer either. How much realism is that? Look. No one is saying that Omar couldn't die or shouldn't die, but as a FICTIONAL character that the audience had so much invested in I think the writers owed the fans more that's all.
I Have Never Seen This Show
we don't get HBO in Canada although we do get some its' shows (e.g. The Sopranos, Sex & The City). That is a pity because I would like to see some of the episodes (perhaps I will look online for DVDs of past seasons). You certainly hit the nail on the head when you said it was gritty!
I agree that gay people need to see more characters like Omar, not because he is a role model, but because he is a complex human being that does not fall into the same old tired gay stereotypes. To me being gay is not about being part of a sub-culture but being a human being that so happens to be emotionally and physically attracted to members of my own sex. It says nothing about what I wear, what I drink, who I vote for, where I work, or what personality traits I have.
Cheers

The Wire
This is the Best show on television, and I'm absolutly stunned by how Omar was done in. As far as I'm concerned he was the best gay character on television. I hate how little attention this show and this character get. Even when the gay community complains that we get little visibility on written shows. Unlike the other nonsense that's out there, this is a show that actually has something important to say. Just like the subjects that the show explores get ignored by society, this show has been ignored by the public and the media. I hate how people applaud Grey's Anatomy for having such a diverse cast. Let's be honest who are the main characters on that boring show? McDreamy and the white chick with the squinty eyes. The Wire is an ensemble cast, and about as diverse a cast as you can get. Why the hell hasn't Oprah addressed this show? I just don't get it. It's for this reason that I no longer have any respect for the Emmys or the Golden Globes.
In regards to Omar, it sucks that he couldn't get his revenge on friggin' Marlo. Oh, I do hope he gets his. From the previous episode, I had a gut feeling Kenard would have something to do with Omar's fate. But damn! Omar did say "You come at the king, you best not miss.", and sure enough little Kenard did not. Bottom line, people need to see this show. It will put you through the ringer, but it will be so worth it. I'll let Omar have the last word.
"...the game's out there, and it's play or get played. That simple." - Omar Little
I live in Baltimore
I'm not so sure how true the Wire is to the streets in Baltimore per say. I will say that Omar's death wasn't true to him as a character. Like I said. I don't mind him dieing though I would have preferred he lived, but his character deserved a better death.
Why bring him back at all? Why have him survive the jump out of a window? etc. The movie critic David Denby had the same complaints about the death of L. Moss in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. I think alot of writers forget that they are creating fiction and not reality. As realistic as the Wire is it's still fiction. Thing are exagerated. As a matter of fact the guy David Simon says Omar is mostly based Omar on is alive and well and recently got married to a woman. You can read about him in a recent edition of New York magazine.
