Boston Globe: P&G cave to AFA pressure.

Boston Globe published an article as a result of the media blitz

Their soap smooch made history. Fans ask: Will it happen again?

By Joanna Weiss Globe Staff /March 1, 2008

Once upon a time, in the melodramatic environs of CBS's "As the World Turns," there was a boy named Luke and another boy named Noah, and they fell in love. They shared in self-discovery, made it through a trying time when Luke was paralyzed from the waist down, celebrated his miraculous recovery, and kissed onscreen. Twice.

Then they stopped kissing. And some fans were happy. And some fans got very, very angry.

Just as a reminder, you can't copy an entire article from another site/source. Feel free to post a paragraph or two, but then always link back to the originalo source! Thanks.

Wow, shall we act

Wow, shall we act surprised? Tell us something we didn't know? Like who the ball-less wonders are at the top of P & G's idiot club and how long that extra ratings push will last? May to June, 2007 ~ lowest ratings in ATWT's history. Put on the Gay couple and you're the third highest rated daytime drama Feb, 2008. You know what this tells you. If your CBS or P & G, NOTHING! I'm tired of Bigots telling me what to watch and how to think. But I feel like I'm a minority in this because these hate groups continue to exist and to dictate! I feel very frustrated! When you try complaining to CBS, when message boards at CBS and P & G are ignored, enough is enough. I just keep wondering why people aren't turning off their sets in protest. When, I ask, When?

excuse my french....

excuse my french, but NO SHIT. (not directed towards OP, but in general)

i do wonder something - - luke and noah are obviously gay and a couple....yet them kissing would be offensive??? i would think them being gay to begin with would be offensive to these AFA people. ok, so as long as they're not kissing...that's perfectly okay, right?

and another thing...how is the sexual innuendo talk NOT offensive, but kissing is???

WTF? god, i hate trying to figure this crap out. sheesh.

Actually, in the article it

Actually, in the article it does state that the AFA wants the homosexual s/l removed completely! They are out to get the gays and anyone else who doesn't comply with their BS!

What P&G needs to realize, I

What P&G needs to realize, I think, is that this is one of those cases where doing what's right happily coincides with doing what's good for business.

As was posted above, the ratings are up. Any truly offended conservative activists likely stopped watching long ago and/or have already started boycotting P&G. There's really nothing to be gained by trying to hold onto them. Whatever they lose with those viewers, they more than make up with new viewers. The numbers show it.

TV is a business. Part of business is building a client base and then expanding it. That's what's been happening since they introduced the Luke/Noah story and that's what would continue to happen if they allowed the story to progress realistically. (Or as realistically as any soap involving a cowboy puppet and pits of deadly oatmeal.) They can only hurt their business in the long run by either catering to the offended or by trying not to offend anyone too much. No one's going to be happy.
