ATWT - Preview for the Week of March 17th

Here is a preview of next week's ATWT episodes (it's a three day week, because of March Madness), which includes Luke and Noah (Noah has a sporty new haircut, BTW), plus the usual gunplay, death threats and other daily Oakdale events......

Oh joy, more ATWT nonsense!

Cute. Noah has a "cover" to maintain as a "straight" and "married" man. That one should get real old, real fast!

Watch this one carefully kids. In St Olaf (Iraq) men and women show less public affection than even Nuke do. Even hand-holding is looked at negatively. So if Ameera starts trying to cling to Noah's arm or otherwise clutch him publically we'll know that either the writers suck when it comes to fact checking (oh, wait, we already knew that) or that she's a plant.

However, they now have an even better reason for Nuke to not kiss, hug or otherwise physically interact. I suspect that even the YouTube snippets are about to get very boring.

Wait!

Didn't the two Homeland Security torpedos see Luke and Noah making on on The Park Bench of Love? And didn't half the town see them dancing together on New Year's Eve? And wasn't the Crazed Colonel put in jail for bashing his son's BOYFRIEND? Did everyone take one of those pills Captain Jack keeps handing out on "Torchwood"???

The ATWT AU

Ah, but in the amazing cosmology of ATWT, every week takes place in an alternate universe wherein previous weeks' events may or may not have occured at all Therefore all the gay backstory can vanish from the minds of any and all witnesses.

Even better, Homeland Security agents are free to suggest illegal methods of getting a green card in order to advance terminally weak storylines, and nobody expects the Immigration people to be suspicious of Noah's sudden marriage to a woman he only just met, gay or not gay.

Only for the die hard Nuke fan

It's my own observation, but with the Nuke storyline currently sinking even further down the proverbial toilet, the numbers are down on the YouTube segments for this dying couple. Only the die hard fans are watching some of them to avoid having to sit through the daily broadcasts that are pure torture. Has the government considered forcing suspected terrorist prisoners to watch this crap? I think it would be worse than the water boarding we've heard so much about.

It's not only the Nuke segments that are unbearable. The rest of this sorry soap is like watching a really bad poorly planned high school drama. Everyone knows that soaps are about infidelity, screwing around on your partner, dropping babies and corruption, but ATWT seems to do it worse than all the competition lately. I thought Passions was the worse until I started watching ATWT when Noah came on board as a love interest for Pineapple Princess Luke. It was good at the outset, but since the Daddy Dearest "toss the fairy down the hill" fiasco late last year, it has been down hill ever since.

There are rumors that this aged soap could bite the dust come renewal time later this year. Its really sad that this classic soap might come to that. With the imbeciles running it now, they definitely deserve cancellation. They should get rid of Goutman, Passanante, and the rest of this inept bunch before it comes to that. If P & G is indeed running this show, they need to clear this crew immediately and get back on track before the last of the devoted viewers jump ship!

Nuke rumor

"There are rumors that this aged soap could bite the dust come renewal time later this year."

First of all, that is impossible. ATWT moved from 7th rank to 3rd place -they would have to take a nose dive in the ratings to not be picked up, which isn't going to happen. And even then they would merit a second chance.

That rumor is generated by people who want us to quit asking for fair depictions of gay people in the media. Damon Romine of GLAAD suggests that the lack of kissing and affection is necessary in order for the story even to be told, which suggests that if we demand kisses the couple will be cut. Fans who would rather have the couple remain neutered suggest that the whole program may be discontinued if we don't stop complaining. With this line of reasoning, if the story line or the show does get cut (both impossible) than I am to blame if I demand accountability.

Goutman and Passanante have brought the show the highest ratings, they aren't going anywhere.

ATWT needs more than Goutman or Passanante

I dunno where you get your information, but to update you on ratings; ATWT is no longer in 3rd place with some of the sources that I have read. Viewership to this debacle has slipped this soap down to 4th and some places down to 5th. All due to the asinine direction the major storylines are taking, Nuke included.

Goutman and Passanante may have initially brought this soap to it's highest ratings, but that was early on with the Nuke storyline. The past few months under their direction, the audience and the support have gone down the tubes. The treatment that Nuke is receiving is not keeping the "newer" audience that came on board. They are leaving in droves thanks to these two imbeciles.

It will take more than ratings to save this disaster. Obviously you need to read a little more. It's ALL about money and budget. P & G wants out of the daytime soap genre because of a decline in viewership.

I have had with with GLAAD also. If this Damon Romine wants us to go back in the closet or whatever and NOT demand kissing and affection, screw GLAAD. Why tell an abbreviated gay story if you can't at least show some kissing and affection. GLAAD has run it's course anyway. If all our bitching drives CBS and P & G to cut Nuke, so be it. At least they won't be shown as a castrated gay couple as they are currently! I and a lot of other gay fans would rather they cut them than see them die this slow death.

GLAAD? To quote a

GLAAD? To quote a politically incorrect non-role model gay character, they are so piss-in-their-pants afraid of "offending" homophobes and right wing nutjobs that they are basically worthless! I think GLAAD ought to grow a pair.

Ratings for the week March 3-7, 2008

(Compared to Last Week/Compared to Last Year)

Total Viewers
1. Y&R 5,477,000 (-311,000/+67,000)
2. B&B 3,983,000 (-178,000/+231,000)
3. ATWT 3,077,000 (-257,000/+99,000)
4. GH 2,919,000 (-96,000/-687,000)
5. DAYS 2,898,000 (-1,000/+58,000)
6. GL 2,745,000 (+3,000/+97,000)
7. AMC 2,559,000 (-29,000/-612,000)
8. OLTL 2,484,000 (-110,000/-555,000)

HH
1. Y&R 4.0/13 (-.2/-.2)
2. B&B 2.9/10 (-.1/-.1)
3. GH 2.3/7 (same/-.5)
4. DAYS 2.2/7 (+.1/+.1)
4. ATWT 2.2/7 (-.2/-.1)
6. AMC 2.0/7 (same/-.5)
6. GL 2.0/6 (same/-.1)
6. OLTL 2.0/6 (same/-.4) <------ ties low rating

So, by total viewers, ATWT is still #3, just ahead of GH, though total households has ATWT 0.1 point less than GH. I don't have the numbers at hand, but I do know that while ATWT performs well with women over 50, girls 12 to 17, and male viewers (ranking #3 in each demo), it doesn't do well with women 18 to 40 (ranking near the bottom with this demo).

However, as the numbers indicate, there HAS been a downturn in viewers; I suspect this is the result of a number of factors: the Nuke/Ameera débacle (which, as TV Guide has pointed out, managed to piss off BOTH gay/gay-friendly viewers AND anti-gay viewers!), the "firing" of Martha Byrne (Lily), and the overall insipidness of other stories (the boring Sofie sucking up airtime, the beyond-silly Carly/Jack/Kit mystery).

Personally, the only thing holding my interest on the show right now is having Henry/Vienna front and center and the fascinating Eric William Morris as the conflicted Matt. I'm almost to the point of fast-forwarding through the Nuke stuff--until they start kissing and having a REAL relationship, it pretty much sucks, and not in a good way.

(Side comment: the real shocker, to me, is how poorly AMC and OLTL are performing in the ratings; now, based on comments I've read elsewhere, AMC is in dire straits right now, with a now-notorious episode in which several female characters pole-danced, like strippers, for fun--and the ratings for subsequent days plummeted as a result; OLTL, on the other hand, is said to be very good right now, so why it's at the bottom of the barrel--the usual resting place of GL--is a mystery to me.)

The best part of ATWT for me is Luke and Noah. They are both excellent in their roles regardless of what they are given. I'm sure they will be backing off the Noah/Ameera s/l as I think they realize that it was not a popular move. While the lack of kissing is infuriating it should not be a reason to stop watching them. What they are allowed to do is made special by how the two actors are able to play off each other. I will continue to wish for kissing but I will still enjoy the couple. I find them the most fascinating part of the show.

I like Henry and Vienna but her sleeping with some other guy just because she was hurt was pretty bad. This was so wrong in so many ways. Luke and Noah kissing is controversial but sleeping with someone you barely know because you are hurt is no big deal.

Now Kit's hilarious death scene made the whole ridiculous s/l worth it.

Joseph's picture

Van and Jake are terrific...

...don't get me wrong, I love their performances as Luke and Noah--you can tell they're totally committed to the roles, doing their best with the material they're given, and their chemistry is wonderful. It's just this Ameera that annoys the heck outta me--she's even worse than Sofie, and that's pretty bad!

While I realize the Henry/Vienna s/l is purely plot-driven, it isn't entirely unbelievable that a flighty airhead like Vienna would sleep with another man out of spite. And Trent Dawson and Ewa da Cruz are so fun to watch that I'm willing to accept the developments; plus, Matt is on the periphery of that s/l.

And, yes, Kit's death was pure classic camp! Lauretta Vaughan really, um, threw herself into the scene, didn't she? :-)

Ameera Blows

I read that on a bathroom wall somewhere.

The whole show is plot driven! Vienna and Henry seem to be two of the only characters whose plot points derive from their characters and character flaws, lust, love of diamonds, sacrifice, compulsive behavior. All that fine soapy stuff. I have no idea who Jack and Carly are or why. The show would be number one if we could believe the plot twists because it seemed like something the characters might be capable of doing. We aren't defined by what we do in life, but what we're capable of doing. the current head writer has no concept of psychology and motivation.
Psionycx's picture

And not in a good way...

I agree.  The characters on ATWT lately seem to exist entirely in a vacuum, disconnected from any kind of interaction or motivation.

Things happen and the individual characters react to them in ways convenient to the writers pushing the storyline rather than in what would seem like a believable emotional or rational response.  Unfortunately, this causes the characters to behave in ways that make no apparent sense and the writers don't seemed inclined to spend time and effort building the surround needed to put their actions into context.

This is why Nuke have lost their luster I think, more so than even just the lack of kissing.  They're supposed to be deeply in love, and yet they seem oddly detached from each other.  Holden and Lily have been swerving around like a couple of drunk drivers from one crisis to the next with resolutions just happening spontaneously.  It's like the writers don't want to build up anything, they just want to throw in whatever sub-plot they can come up with, play it for a week or two, and then move on to the next.

What did TV Guide say?

What did TV Guide say? Enquiring minds what to know.

I can't remember the exact quote...

...but I believe it was Michael Logan discussing how each soap had managed during the writer's strike and said essentially that by pissing off both gay viewers and anti-gay viewers it was quite an achievement!

ATWT ratings

I don't have direct access to Nielsen ratings for daytime or soaps. So if you do have access to ratings please cite your sources, I'd be interested.

Soaps continue to hold the top 5 ratings for Women 18-49, for daytime programing. (TV by the numbers only rates this demographic) With The View occasionally coming into 4th or 5th place. It doesn't seem that ATWT has gained any ground with Women 18-49.

I found this posted on the CBS boards from a reliable source for daytime drama:
Nielsen Week of February 18-22, 2008
Total Viewers
1. Y&R 5,855,000 (+13,000/+151,000)
2. B&B 4,106,000 (+100,000/+122,000)
3. ATWT 3,342,000 (+136,000/+238,000)
4. DAYS 3,215,000 (+253,000/+214,000)
5. GH 3,061,000 (+179,000/-879,000)
6. AMC 2,896,000 (+200,000/-481,000)
7. OLTL 2,828,000 (+210,000/-398,000)
8. GL 2,808,000 (+51,000/+31,000)

According to Soapzone, Young and the Restless out-shined prime time shows like
"According to Jim" and "Lipstick Jungle."

I don't trust the soap journals when they foretell the death of soap operas, they have a stake in the business. The only time that I have heard that CBS has plans it dump it's soaps is from someone who was trying to make a point. Either a rabid fan tying to rally support for their "sure to be canceled" story or a disgruntled fan who's foretelling the demise due to crappy writing.

ATWT recently purchased new cameras and moved to new (supposedly cheeper) studios and has lost a couple of their higher paid stars. They should be turning a profit. The investment suggests that they are planning on keeping the show. Considering that soaps are still holding their own with an important demographic suggests they aren't going anywhere.

The recent spike in the show's overall ratings can be attributed to the current production staff; as much as you and I may hate them I would guess that P&G would give them a chance to create the same thing over again. If they aren't able to do it by the end of summer I wouldn't be surprised to see staff changes.

We seem to be of the same opinion, but I would like to get my facts right.
