News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Does alice live here?

I just want to thow this out there, like throwing out a rope and hoping somebody grabs the other end.

I have been impressed with AfterElton mainly because of the level of discourse on these forums. I've been to alot of forums on many subjects. The members I've met here are polite, articulate but more importantly value intelligent discourse. I'm talking about the folks I disagree with. I've felt like I had climbed a mountain and dipped into the last unpolluted pool of water. (sorry, I couldn't help that bit of drama) And now I feel like I am the one polluting the pool by engaging a unique breed of goons trolls.

I grew up in that odd, gay, pc world where ogling naked men was cool, but objectifying women was not. By association, objectifying gay men was also not cool. The way I've dealt with objectification is to separate my archetypes, if you will. I had porn and obvious beef cake on one side and then literature, movies, tv and everything else were different. Yeah, that line gets blurred and I have called on the authority of 'good taste' to determine the difference. To decide if it was entertaining, sleazy, or just down right offensive because some line had been crossed. Well, that's what I've been working with and maybe I need help with my boundary issues.

I don't expect people here to have developed an opinion on the slasher trend, or understand it. I'm sure that I don't completely understand it. The words to describe the trend fluctuate daily. I prefer to avoide a discourse based in the bullspit of commodities and trends.

The slang word "Slasher", terminologically as I learned it, has more to do with orgies at a comic con involving bi men in furry costumes than having anything to do with gay romance. Yes, the word relates to man/man (man slash man) sex or woman/woman sex, but I've only seen it used in the basest way. Slasher relates to SEX. I see slasher as a derogatory term which devalues gay love to the point of sexual fetishism. While I don't begrudge people their sexual fetishes, I do like to think there is an appropriate place for it. When a fetish leaves the bedroom and becomes an all encompassing force in someone's life -that's just wrong.

An attitude seems to exist that because men are dominate, it is okay to sexualize gay romance. It's not the same as sexualizing lesbian romance. And what follows is fetishizing gay love, to the point that it will just become another joke in Jay Leno's Repertoire.

There is a current trend involving straight women who fetishize gay love. As unique as that may seem, I still think it's kinda cool. But to commodify that fetish into a soap opera is derogatory and demeaning to gay men.

Bad afterelton editing

Sorry about this, I spent alot of time on writing the above commetary. I use Apple and Firefox and this system doesn't allow you to preview or correct a new forum topic. I meant to write "goons trolls." because I thought that would be a cute way to point out what I think is a unique type of troll to this site. sorry I goofed.

thanks from a mac

As a Mac user I know I have to be patent with the adjustments needed to make microsoft systems web compliant. I just gotta kvetch about it, kvetching is in the agreement contract that you have to sign when you buy a Mac.

Since we seem to be at odds over the whole ATWT flap, I was hoping you would share your opinion on the topic I wrote about, either here or in a pm. I've been thinking that you and I may be alot alike but with drastically different values. Wait, I guess that would mean we are not at all alike.

I believe that the ATWT flap could lead us closer to an understanding of how the new generation sees gay couples. I believe ATWT's writers are looking into that, but failing miserably. I dont' think they have much of a clue. But you may be in a position to help behemoths like Proctor and Gamble to deal with new archetypes in a respectfull way.

I thank you for making this a place where I can voice my differences. And I am smiling today because I know you read my posts.

fanfic

For me, the term slash is associated with fanfic. It's used in all kinds of ways, but to me "slash fiction" generally means fan fiction of any kind with same sex relationships (whether the pairings are cannon or not). I think they can run from sweet and romantic, to explicit and graphic. For example, from LOTR, a lot of Sam/Frodo slashers seem really into the emotional aspect of the relationship. Most women generally want to see relationships with a solid, emotional base. The complaint that they often get from men is not that their fiction is too sexual, but that the characters analyse and talk about their feelings too much, which is unrealistic to most men. (It can be difficult for a woman to get into the head of a man, and vice-versa because you often don't even realize the differences.) At the same time, these are not fictions of "neutered" characters. There is often sex along with the romance.

I think the "fetishizing" aspect is there too, among female slash fans. (IMO, these are more likely to be teenagers who can't spell, and shouldn't be reading/posting that kind of thing online in the first place). I don't see that kind of fan being drawn to ATWT, however... I mean, the characters never show any skin, let alone kiss. There's nothing to objectify.
