In GeneralGenerally, I prefer plot driven shows/epidodes over character driven ones, though I do like well rounded characters. The sort of Soap Opera-ish angle-who is getting divorced, cheating, why, etc...who will be the next to be kidnapped, and thrown in the secret room, etc-storylines annoy me. For that reason, NYPD Blue was never my favorite cop show. The Julien driven episodes of The Shield were ok, but rather predictable. The one exception to my general attitude were the Jodie Dallas driven episodes of Soap...of all things. I like that Torchwood can throw in a bit of character driving romance/etc without letting it completely take over the series. Too many shows would let the Capt. Jack-whomever thing completely eclipse all else. If he were straight, and into Tosh...or gay, and devoted to Owen, the show would soon become another Days Of Our Lives. Making Jack bi, and letting him try numerous flings with various humans, and aliens, keeps the show grounded in it's sci-fi origin. Whether an episode is straight, gay, bi, or asexually, oriented I prefer imaginative plots, and little preaching, with a bit of humor. On Are You Being Served?, John Inman's character-Mr. Humphries-seemed gay sometimes, and effeminate but straight other times, and the situations created some laughs. I once wrote a fan letter to Mr. Inman...and got a reply. He seems quite down to Earth compared to some celebrities. I'm an eclectic who: watches many types of TV shows/movies, and reads many types of books, and meets many types of people. I find British TV, and American Cable channels, to be more interesting, more realistic, less fad driven, and less patronizing. Sexuality-straight/gay/bi/other-is a part of life, and should be a part of TV...but should be only a part of it. TV also needs a bit of the non-sexual side of life for it to be as well rounded, and realistic, as it could be. People of all genders/colors/orientations/ etc have something to contribute, and should do so.
