News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Eurovision Song Contest 2008

Hey, it's, like, the biggest gay event in Europe that's not a Pride event!

Last year, Afterelton did an entry about ESC, shouldn't they do it this year as well? :D Here's a head's up of (IMO) the entries of gay entries this year (videos from the 1st rehearsals at the arena, stage shows most probably not all final and the clothes are not the ones she'll be wearing come ESC week either):

First the least "gay-important" ones:

Isis Gee - Poland - "For Life" - http://youtube.com/watch?v=IGkmKMvabPs

One of many divas this year, but the only one with a power ballad (besides Dima, that is). She just needs to wear a ball gown or something like in the music video. Very Celine Dion (not voice-wise, just the music and the way she looks). Other than that, not much gay interest here :P.

Dustin the Turkey - Ireland - "Irelande Douze Pointe" - http://youtube.com/watch?v=crErgFNE-As

It's disco, the wagon he's on has spinning disco balls and a disco light-ball-thingie (one of those that shoot out multi-coloured columns of light), people dressed up as turkeys and that female singer is probably going to wear something faaaaabulous. It's a crap song, though.

Nico & Vlad - Romania - "Pe-o Lumine de Lume" - http://youtube.com/watch?v=5pzcOxQMfLY

Umm... it's opera? That's pretty much the only gay interest I can find in the song :P

Kalomira - Greece - "Secret Combination" - http://youtube.com/watch?v=rJTbIY14FlI

Etno R n' B-ish. A young little divatastic girl. And look at that "book" and those glittery poles. There'll probably be a lot of glitter and fabulousness come ESC week. And look at those dancers go!

Now for the most "important" ones for us homos:

Dima Bilan - Russia - "Believe" - http://youtube.com/watch?v=aNO48xhobpI

Ignore the crappy English lyrics, just listen to the song and watch the stage show. It's Dima and he'll set many girls' and gay guys' hearts on fire. And there's even a little quasi-homo-erotic moment in there as well! I mean, grabbing someone with their back to you and turning them around to face you? I've seen that in tons of romantic/dramatic moves and music videos... always with a girl and a guy... not with two guys! :D Also, figure skating! Whaaaa?! XD Also, the song is produced by none other than Timbaland!

Euroband - Iceland - "This is my Life" - http://youtube.com/watch?v=quR6fc_xiF0

I'm a bad gay boy, I can't differentiate between certain "gay" music genres. What is this? Dance? Euro dance? Euro techno dance? Whatever, it's fabulous! And gay! Get  and dance!

Charlotte Perelli - Sweden - "Hero" - http://youtube.com/watch?v=nx5S01zY4x4

True Disco Schlager from Sweden (as usual). Schlagertastic! A diva who kinda looks like a drag queen impersonating her. Just overall very fabulous song. Her outfit will probably be fabulous as well.

Ani Lorak - Ukraine - "Shady Lady" - http://youtube.com/watch?v=OzbJa5qUl5Q

A song with a much more fabulous refrain! Fabulous disco, just slap on a sparkly red dress or something else glittery and it'll be the gay Eurovision song of the year! And look at that diva stage show! Also, all dancers are male!

Deep Zone & Balthazar - Bulgaria - "DJ Take me Away" - http://youtube.com/watch?v=HWq-Qv3gu2M

DJ take me away indeed. Fabulous whatever the hell that is (I told you I'm a bad gay)! Dance-tastic! And so very gay-friendly! And look at that fabulous red dress! Feathers!

Elnur & Samir - Azerbaijan - "Day After Day" - http://youtube.com/watch?v=suKgzGC40g8 (no rehearsal video on Youtube yet)

People dressed as an angel and the devil singing falsetto? That must be gay enough to qualify as a song of gay interest for you guys!

So, what do you guys think?

Well

I have not been involved much this year. Since Spains entry this year is really shamefull, I havent been that interested. Since today are the first semifinals, I might. One thing that I will say is that every year it is less about the music and more about shameless entertainment and shock value. Last year winner was good though. Well see how it goes today.

Of the gay content, only Russia and Azerbaijan go to battle today. The rest are in the second semi.

To be honest, only Sweden has merit on my view. But the eastern block might get their guys to the final.

I like the Bulgarian entry.  But, then, that's where I live!  Here's a live link:

I checked out the Dima Bilan video, which is very nice, apart from an unfortunate sound effect toward the end.  However, I believe you misread the shoulder grab.  What I saw was a man grabbing a girl's shoulder and turning her around, not another boy.  The girl is a photographer with very short hair; she is also very sexy.  No gay action to speak of, but, wait, isn't that Evgeny Pluschenko in those ice skates?  He doesn't look nearly as pumped up as he does in the following video:

The sports commentators are truly embarrassed by this.

Well, Dima and Yvgeny won, if anybody's interested.  Hello!  Anybody home?

Last year, Marija (a lesbian, I think she's come out now) won. She opened the final with a gay-tastic opening act.

This year, Dima (a gay/gay-seeming/meterosexual guy) won. If he just comes out and then we have a bisexual person/transgendered person win next year (the return of Verka Seduschka? Pulling a Dima? 2nd one year, 1st two years later?), we'll have a LGBT trifecta!
