News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Manga fandom

Are you a Manga maniac? Want to share your love of Yaoi, Bara, and/ or Yuri? Perhaps you're new to all of this. Why not post a comment here and share your thoughts on the subject. I've started this thread in particular because of the GAY GEEK post this week:

Author Lyle Masaki commented afterwords on several titles in particular for suggested reading:

"I'm actually kinda mixed about Gravitation. I didn't care for the manga but rather liked the anime, but it is one of the first titles to make it here. I really, really enjoyed Fake, which had an interesting romance. It has plenty of "so bad its good" aspects -- the police stories are badly done and the presentation of New York is a late 80s, exotified view of the city -- but those problems manage to be pretty charming and silly.

As for titles that are more realistic, The Moon and the Sandals manages to have quite a number of realistic touches while still offering moments of escapist romance... though Fumi Yoshinaga's visual storytelling takes a bit of adjustment. Two other interesting series that are character focused without any kind of outlandish plotting (which you'll find in spades in Gravitation -- it's like some really crazy soap opera) are Close the Last Door and Shout Out Loud. has a bit of realism to it, while managing to still offer escapist romance."

Thanks Lyle for your insights and will post what I find interesting here, too! :)

I'd suggest "Embracing Love"

I'd suggest "Embracing Love" by Youka Nitta. The two guys are porn stars, one gay, one straight, who are thrown together making a mainstream film playing lovers. Then they become lovers in real life, dealing with fame, family acceptance, other guys, etc. It's pretty adult and more "realistic" than, say, "Gravitation" or "Fake!"

OH! That sounds fun, actually. Thanks for the tip. But if I don't like it... I'm sending you the bill! ;-)

Boy Princess

I've been meaning to post this for a while now, but I recently picked up a title called "Boy Princess" that was originally a web comic series (I think) and is Manhwa (Korean) and Shonen-ai (less explicit than yaoi). Anyways, I loved the idea and the artwork, but found the story unbearable!

It's a story about a princess that is supposed to be married off to another royal family, but instead runs off with a common stable boy. So the family decides to try and disguise their youngest son as the bride!?! There are some funny moments, but the story is slow (I think) and unfortunately I just got bored with it. There are some gay characters, but they are shrouded in mystery for the most part and just add to my frustration. I wonder if the gay issues will ever be dealt with out in the open, but I fear I will never know as I seriously doubt I'll get the next book. :P
