Turns out that Dusty wasn't dead after all!  Greyson McCouch (Dusty) is returning to the show and will be back September 24th.  Even bigger news for long time fans is that uber-villian James Stenbeck, played by Anthony Herrera is also coming back and will return on August 27th.

Good News

This is great news--hopefully they will finally let Dusty know that he, and not Paul, is the true Stenbeck heir.

I have a soft-spot in my heart for all the characters who were so important when I started watching in the late 80's.

Now BRING BACK JOHN DIXON!

Are they saying for sure

Are they saying for sure that Grayson is returning "as Dusty"? I mean, this is a soap, and maybe...just for once....they will allow a dead character to stay dead.  I would be delighted to see Dr. Morgan Winthrop come to Oakdale Memorial, McCouch's Another World character.  Morgan was a sweetie, the sort of heroic doctor that Chris Hughes OUGHT to be, rather than the slimy liar we have right now.  Morgan's brother, Cass Winthrop, as well as a half-dozen AW characters have appeared on ATWT over the years, so the two soaps exist in the same "universe" and it would be interesting to see how everyone would react to a kinder, gentler (and clearly-enunciating) version of "Dusty".

Oh wow

Another World. You took me back for a moment. I loved that show.

It's Dusty.....

AFAIK, it is Dusty as we remember him.   Chris Goutman said when GMC left that if he wanted to come back, they'd find a way to bring him back.  I never much cared for the character/actor, but he was incredibly popular so having him and AH back might help those sagging ratings, which is clearly the intent.

My guess is that James somehow faked Dusty's death (even though we saw Dusty die, lie on the floor for days and there was an autopsy) and has been keeping him all this time.  As Dusty is the true Stenbeck heir, maybe it's somehow tied into that.

Since the show is ending the Holden/Carly mess and Holden and Lily are going to get back together sooner rather than later, my guess is that they'll reunite, or be close to it, just as Dusty comes back from the dead and throws their relationship in crisis yet again.

And I'd bet that this new character, James Wheatley, is also tied into this.  He probably is working for James and is using the money from Luke's foundation for some nefarious purpose.

Despite the silliness of explaining how Dusty is alive, this has the potential to be a nice umbrella storyline involving lots of characters (Lily, Holden, Dusty, Luke, Noah, Lucinda, Brian, James, Paul, Meg, Babs, Em and Casey), something sorely missed on this show.  It would be a nice balance while the other half of the show monitors Parker and Liberty's sex lives.

I wonder though that with these huge (and expensive) returns if we're going to see a few more lesser actors/characters being shown the door to save money.

springintoaction's picture

If Goutman could let go of his ego and reach out to Martha/JohnD

... the show would have the actors/characters to work with and focus on writing. I am all for letting go of other characters are Mike is a perfect example of wasted money as no matter how low his market value is, it all means nothing if the actor/material don't do anything. Now I suggest that they do the same with Aaron, Ali, Chris Hughes, Janet, and put all the kids on recurring. I'd add Noah to the list, but I am just being snarky to poke a few of his fans here :-)

I hope that they don't waste Anthony Herrera's return as the last appearance was so lame and I know that Herrera's health has been challenged for many years now. While I hate baby stories, it might be time to bring Lucy and Johnny back, BUT only if played by Peyton List as she was so boring with Aaron but loved her with Dusty and it made him be less monotone. I also see great possibilities between Emily and Casey with Dusty and Lucy around. A true love quadrangle...

The only thing that I disagree with many is on the Carly/Holden pairing. While it makes as much sense as Casey Emily on paper, to me they work, irrespectively of history. With Martha no longer playing Lily, this pairing was given some breathing room and almost feels like a natural progression, esp. as Jackass continues to trash Carly as the writers don't get that they don't need to get us to hate Carly or Jack and that it would have been more potent to have these two apart having old feelings even as they move on and then maybe...... some of us who liked Carjack could root for them instead of hating him and hearing yet more demonizing of Carly. I don't want Holden and Carly to end it fast as they and Casey and Em are the only thing that is keeping me watching

I Wouldn't Be Shocked....

.... to see some more exits in the wake of these big returns.  I think over the next month we might some some characters being positioned to leave town.

BTW, Julie Pinson (Janet), Meredith Hanger (Liberty) and Mick Hazen (Parker) are already recurring.  None of them are on contract.

I'm afraid with Dusty's return, Em and Casey are doomed.   The head writer has already said that Lily and Emily will be mixed up with Dusty when he comes back.  Which makes me wonder what they're going to do with Casey.

springintoaction's picture

Stab me yet again.....

If they break up Emily and Casey on top of Carly and Holden, then I'll only hold out hope that Lucinda gets some traction with her intended paramour.

With regard to players on contract versus recurring, my point was more "old-school" as these days contract players and recurring are treated the same when it comes to screen time. As you know recurring players on this show seem to get more airtime than contract players, which seems to be one of the issues bothering even the younger veterans and this fan.

Nuke is the perfect example as they both might as well be recurring as Luke may sneak a show or two a year more than Noah irrespectivelty of their contractual differences. I assume that queen Sofie Duran was also recurring, but she's a special breed as I am convinced that she's got some charm that is lost on everyone but Chris Goutman.

Lily and Emily mixed up with Dusty? Maybe there is hope for Holden and Carly if I start a campaign :-)

Sofie....

The actress who played Sofie was recurring for much of her run, but she was placed on contract early this year.  The show had big plans for her, but they suddenly realized that after nearly a year viewers still hated her and no amount of pimping could make them like her.  So she was fired shortly after getting a contract.

It's too bad the Casey/Em pairing is doomed.  I loved them, but I don't think the show was very committed to the couple.  I HATED the Dusty/Em pairing, but the show seems determined to revisit it.  I'm curious to see how NuLily and Dusty are together.  And I wonder if they'll start hinting at a connection between Dusty and Noah again.

In terms of Lucinda/Brian, I'm not so sure it's going to be a romantic relationship.  If it is, it's because of nefarious reasons, either related to James or somehow involving Luke's foundation money (or both).  I don't think the show is going to give a vet a long term love interest.  Casting notes describe them as friends and/or business associtates.  I think that'll be the extent of their relationship.  Hope I'm wrong though.

springintoaction's picture

I think that you are right on just about all.... What a waste...

You bring up the point of "commitment" and I started to think that one of the biggest problems in this show is the lack of commitment to what works or has potential along with an arrogant commitment to push elements that no one wants. I was not a fan of the Em/Dusty pairing either as it seemed to happen as there were no other male/female options left.

I think that the Dusty character is central to the show and hope that they loosen him up as the hero thing was tired. Maybe he and Fily can rekindle their fire, which would be interesting as now neither character would be played by their original portrayers circa 1985. I can see Fily and Emily having some good cat fights, leaving Carly and Holden ready for good love. <---- Just me wishing. I miss Martha a whole bunch, but I liked seeing a p.o'd Fily so as long as she's not with Holden, I think Noelle can grow on me.

I can't stand that a Lucinda can't aspire for a long-term love interest. Can you imagine a John Dixon/Lucinda Walsh mature pairing to contrast Nancy/Bob Hughes. Talk about mining history and strength manifested in different ways. Even the "kids" would be in awe and demand that Romper Room sex be kicked to the curb.

I am eager to see Herrera back on the canvas but with this bunch at the helm, I am going to lower all expectations as this character is very hard to write for as it needs the words and a well orchestrated plot. The former is not out of the realm but the latter seems impossible as this crew can't write anything resembling suspense, much less maintain it.

Any news on Vienna? Are they trimming more "fat" or is this an actual storyline that is lasting more than 2 days? It seems like she's hit the road for good given how the show moves?

Vienna Is Not Leaving....

.... the show is actually giving the couple a storyline.   Besides, the actress is recurring so it's not like she's costing them a lot of money.

springintoaction's picture

Good to hear as little makes sense. Thanks Anthony!

There were rumblings of Henry's portrayer being let go around the time that Dusty was shot and since the couple does not have any family on the canvas, it's always worrisome.

AFAIK,

Trent Dawson wasn't going to be let go, but the actor was talking about not signing a new contract.  Why?  The show wasn't using him and there seemed to be no storyline on the horizon.  But he did sign a three year deal and was given a storyline (the Grey Gerald arc) but was right back to propping Katie after that was over.  I just hope the new story is interesting.  Dawson is a fan favorite and a great actor with range.... it's a shame the show can't find more than him just being the comic relief, though I do think the upcoming story is more of the dramatic variety.

Bob and NANCY?!?

Now THERE'S a pairing I'd tune in to see.  It would explain so much about Bob.

Seriously though, let's see more Lucinda.  Bring back John Dixon.  Remind everyone that Kim stole Susan's husband (Dan Stewart, Emily's father) before Susan slept with Bob.  There's lots of history here.  They should use it.

I don't hate Liberty, Parker and Janet, but it does seem like the show has become all about them lately.  And why did Parker try to open the condom before he even finished unbuttoning Liberty's blouse?  Is he that afraid of premature ejaculation?

Sofie was a

non-starter from the get go. She clicked with nobody and Lord knows they tryed. Perhaps there was a shortage of youg female actors? Who knows.

As for Dusty coming back I hope they rekindle the Noah connection. I think it would be a good thing for the character. The misguided hero can get to be a bit tiresome.

As for Noah, he needs his own orbit. Having a screwed up dad in the form of Dusty would make for good viewing. I know I would watch.

WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

James Stenbeck is my all-time favorite character.  He chews scenery as voraciously as William Shatner, but is even more awesome while doing it.  His presence will make any other shortcomings of the show bearable.

James is also why I became able to watch ATWT despite all the goofy illogical stuff (teleporters, for example).  The first couple of times he came back from the dead I was nonplussed.  "NO, they CAN'T do that!" I'd say.  Then about the third time I was just so happy to have him back that I just went with it, and that allowed me to go with the other goofiness, almost as if I was in an alternate universe where the normal logic of life didn't apply.  So when people nitpick things that don't make sense I just grin knowingly....

Welcome back, James!  Please stay for awhile.

brcksvg's picture

Damn it

Getting rid of the actor who played Dusty was one of the few things ATWT did correctly recently. He was, by far, the worst actor I have seen in a very long time. I talking Andie McDowell bad. Why bring him back and fire Jon Prescott?

springintoaction's picture

I think "Mike" has no place on the canvas, but he's not alone

but I do feel your pain if you think his portrayer is hot and/or a good actor. I Dusty is a central character to the canvas with family and connections everywhere. It's like bringing back Bonnie when who we really want to see is her mother. The same applies to Vienna and even my beloved Henry, but they are such pros that they would be worth the effort if the writers figured out how to integrate them.

Talent is a relative term and I totally see how Dusty's portrayer is not every one's cup of ...... His attire and his demeanor became quite monosyllabic with time, but I think that he's good as his fire with two Lucy's ago brought out this tenderness as did his devilish ways with Lucinda. The whole turning him into Batman did him or the audience any favors.

BTW, I love the Andy McDowell bad snark ;-) So true. I loved her best in St. Elmo's Fire as she had nothing to say and just look like a video vixen version of a doctor as Emilio Estevez just projected all these qualities on her.

I really thought that the

I really thought that the storyline before Dusty was killed was leaning towards Dusty being Noah's real father since he (Dusty) had a past with Noah's mother. Did anyone else think this or am I WAY over-projecting?

I thought that storyline would explain (in a soap universe sort of way) the Colonel's psychosis - being cuckolded by Dusty.

I totally thought that too....

...and that would give the writers an out on Noah's messed up psychy regarding his father. Then, he could stop making excuses and get all "strong" and start supporting Luke in his travails, do some serious comforting.....well, you know, I can dream.

Off track, I know, but...

...did anybody catch Monday's episode? Casey invited Emily and his parents to lunch together, and it went as well as expected. (Sweet boy, but not the brightest bulb in the tanning bed).

When Emily tells her mom about it, Susan shoots back, "He's been a baaaad boy. You should spank him! Maybe you already have."

loved that. Not as funny as "Robbing the womb", but still a reminder that Susan is underused on the show. It's wasn't just the line, but the way she delivered it.

That was the show's highlight... More Susan zingers

The acrtress who plays Susan is master at making the pain in the ass "mother" more than just a nag as she peppers her nag/overprotection with an acerbic delivery that rocks. If the writers ever want great delivery of even the most tame of lines, she's the sure thing. I wish that Susan had walked into that lunch from hell and gave Margo a piece of her mind as the nag turns into a pit-bull if anyone messes with her trampy daughters. The way things are going, I'd rather see a ladies fight club with Susan, Babs, Lucinda, and Kim trampling on all of Oakdale's men as they are so weak.

I can't wait until Susan gets another line about Casey/Emily as the hopsital is so ripe for it. Here's my original contribution for today......

Emily: Hi mother

Susan: Why are you here? What did you do now?

Emily: Nice to see you too mom. I just came to have lunch with my favorite mother.

Susan: Yeah right. Did you lose Casey again? Try the maternity ward. Take Ali with you as all those newborns look alike and the last thing we need is another baby switch around here.

Marie Masters

That's her name. She began playing the role of Susan back in 1968(!), although she took a break from the role in the late '70's, due to health problems, returning in '86.

springintoaction's picture

Bill S - New fan or old school?

I ask as it make a difference in that she rocked the house when she was hitting the bottle (and not the one that she can tell Emily Casey drinks from) and sleeping with saintly Bob Hughes. What I love about Marie is that she's also a writer and scribed ATWT for a long time during her absence from the screen. Part of me wants to believe that the zingers that she's letting loose are based on her unique delivery and possibly her own "suggestions."

Dusty Which?

So, they Fired Brian Bloom, who originated the role, and hired Grayson McCouch to replace him, only to rehire Brian Bloom and after he was doing well fire him so they could rehire Grayson McCouch. It seems like the hirings and firings are more of a soap opera than the actual show..

Anthony D. Langford's picture

No.....

Bloom was not fired.  He left the show of his own accord.  GMC was not hired to replace him.  When Dusty came back about 7 years ago in the form of GMC, his character hadn't been in town since the early 80's.   When the show wanted to bring back Dusty after all those years, they asked Bloom, but he turned down the offer so they hired GMC.  Most current fans don't even remember that anyone else played Dusty.

I'm so Happy!

I'm so happy to hear that James is coming back! He is by far one of the best soap villians and Dusty's coming home! Yea!!!!

Anthony D. Langford's picture

The One Good Thing...

... about James return is more work for Colleen Zenk Pinter (Babs).  And there better be some James and Lucinda scenes.  But who knows with this show.  Does anyone realize that since the Holden/Carly reveal, there hasn't been a scene between Holden and Jack about his affair with Carly?   Jack and Holden used to talk about EVERYTHING.  Holden was the person Jack confided in when he suspected Luke might be gay.  They wouldn't talk about this?  Sloppy, ATWT, sloppy.

The Many Worlds of Oakdale

The characters on this show (and most soaps today) are written in isolation from the others.  Stories exist with four or five main players, and there's no overlapping of the stories even when it would make so much sense (and...drama!) to have people reacting to one another's problems/stories.  That was how you filled up time in the old days--have some big story development, then spend several days watching as the whole town tells each other and reacts. Now, it's like characters exist in their own bubbles and won't leave them.  These events could be happening in separate TOWNS and it would hardly impact the overall tone.

Besides the Jack/Holden chats, I miss the Kim/Barbara interactions; Aaron's with Holden; and Katie/Margo.  Katie might as well be dis-owned, given how isolated she has become from her family.  It would also be nice to see a few cast-wide events, where the Snyders, Ryans, Hugheses, and Stewarts could mingle once again.  But of course that would be expensive, and money trumps everything these days.

Stenbeck = hot

I'm so psyched for James to return.  I was thinking that all the mind control items had to be related to some Stenbeck, somewhere.  I love this mystery, even though it's very DOOL, and also they are making it go so quickly.  I just don't like the constant music a la Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.  I still remember the day that James returned from the dead dressed as a monk - chilling!
