ATWT ratings for August 18-22, 2008 - Ratings keep dipping but it's not just ATWT

I know that the Olympic coverage may have thrown a wrench in this, but it still looks pretty lousy for ATWT as the show is tanking in what the genre deems to be their bread and butter: females in the 18-49 and 18-34.

Also, if you focus on the audiences of tomorrow (assuming that there will be a tomorrow) it seems like OLTL and DOOL are the only shows that might be doing something that is making those little girls watch. It seems that ATWT's focus on tweers is doing little to reel them in.

The Real Concern.....

.... is that both Y&R and B&B, the show's lead in gained last week.... but ATWT continued to slide.  The fact that ATWT didn't pick up viewers right along with them is not good.   I wonder if James Stenbeck's return can turn things around.  I'm not sure.  Some fans might tune in to see James.... but when they see the horror show that makes up Oakdale, I can see them tuning right back out.  I thought the Parker/Liberty story bored me silly, but the Dani/Chris/Ali/Aaron quad is just stupifying.  We don't care about these people and who they are sleeping with.  That's the key to a quad.  We have to care about the people involved, who winds up with who.  There has to be something 'there'.... and there's no 'there' here, if you get my drift.
springintoaction's picture

In total agreement about the trends and the boredom of ATWT

ATWT should have gained viewers and it's odd as it's like people are choosing to turn the show off as if to send a message or something. It's not like they are turning the channel to OLTL as that show also lost viewers.

Remember ATWT last attempt at a quad? Not only did they wake Rosanna from a coma, but they brought back Cady McLain to play her. Then they canned the actor playing Craig and brought back his original portrayer. We all know the PAINFUL result as not only was it a mess onscreen but treated veteran actors like crap and left them jobless.

The fact that Chris' portrayer has been bumped down to recurring MAY say that this beyond boring quad may have already been put to sleep. Except it would seem that if Alison or Aaron's portrayers had been let go to live happily ever after in Seattle (as I keep suggesting) we would have also heard that bit of news along with the contractual changes that I am pretty sure will be the end of Chris.

I agree with you about Liberty and Parker as they bore me (pot brownies and stripped shirt-would be rapist and all), but they seem like GH's Luke and Laura circa 1982 compared to the quad. And look who is remaining from the last messed up quad... Meg and Paul.... Ugh. Even seeing the amazing Anthony Herrera chewing scenary when he was eating his sandwich with an evil eye on Paul and Meg, could not make up for how boring the show can get.

I know you have become a Katie and Brad fan, so I can only imagine how you hate seeing them being 5th bananas to a purse and bag of brownies. I don't love them, but I like them together and Jack and Katie, especially with katy becoming this new perfect person was to me worse than those who are appaled about Carly and Holden.

For two seconds, I was hoping that ATWT would shoot a remote in the Jersey Shore and sell it as Tahiti, and I'd laugh WITH them just to see certain adult characters not talking about, chasing, or supporting characters that should be tangential at best. Now even the Mauras and Michaels of the world must know how Elizabeth Hubbard has felt for years. I did not look at previews as I am going back to my old ways so that maybe not knowing something might add a twinge of surprise. I doubt it as I am sure the next show will have all sorts of Libery/Parker stuff as Brad will get charged with ..... for ......... Speaking of nothing, are the scribes so lame not to be able to come up with a different last name for the intern/rapist. Is he going to be a long lost brother of JJ's as he has the same last name as Julia #2 and Keith/Scottie Baldwin?

I'd Like To Hope....

... that Dylan Bruce (Chris) being dropping to recurring means the actor would be on his way out (and take this boring story with him).  The thing is, on this show they have so many actors (Julie Pinson, Meredith Hanger, Mick Hazen and Jake Silbermann) who are recurring who are seen regularly and have story.  So I'm afraid he'll probably be around, boring us silly with this dull quad.  The show really has a problem with Aaron, Ali, Dani and Chris.  The story clearly is not working.  It has spent much of the time on the backburner and now that we're getting more of it, audiences aren't exactly wowed and you can see how uninteresting it really is.  The problem is if you lose these actors, you lose most of your 20-somethings, not to mention the next generation of the show.  That would leave Luke, Noah and Casey.  Oddly enough, they are most popular and appealing of all the young folks currently on the show.  Yet, the three with the least amount of story.

If I'm writing the show I'd age Luke and Noah a couple of years (easy to do since both actors are well into their 20's) and bring back Maddie for Casey.  They could act as a quad, but their bond would be friendship, not romance, much like Maddie, Casey, Gwen and Will were.  I'd marry off Aaron and Ali and send them back to Seattle.  I would keep Chris and either pair him with Dani or bring on a new character for him.   Chris is a Hughes and Bob and Kim's son.  He should be on the canvas.  The problem is he's not being used effectively.  And the writing for his been awful.

I wouldn't say I'm a fan of Brad and Katie.  I like the couple and I see their appeal.  I have more of a problem with what has been done to them, which is shameful.   The show took one of their hottest couples, took away everything the fans loved about them and then backburnered them.  And for what?  A teen couple that isn't wowing the audience and had the rating tumbling.  I know you have to feature your teens heavily during the summer, but the show HAD a hot teen couple that brought in the ratings (and we know who they are).  And what has been done to them is shameful as well.  But it looks like Brad and Katie will have a new story starting in October (that is not about Parker and Liberty).  That, along with Jack and Carly back in one another's orbits, plus a new story for Luke and Noah (that looks to be promising) just might help with the ratings.  It's what worked last year.  Though, the show is pinning a lot of it's hopes on the returns of James and Dusty.

I agre about Chris being a critical character in the canvas

and while I am not a huge fan of his current portrayer, he's not Sofie-like bad, should have gotten something that he could work with or wait until they'd found a Paul Leyden-like actor to play "Chris". Maybe I am wrong in this, but the show is casting blandly instead of blindly. Maybe lookalike Mike would have made a better Chris, but he's also bland.

TPTB don't seem to get that no matter how hot an actor is, that the novelty wears off if they don't have the goods. They all can't be Simon-worthy but women, even more than men, tend to go for appealing actors who don't need to be cookie cutter pretty material. No one will ever accuse Anthony Geary or the guy that plays Victor Newman on Y&R for being pretty faces, but they have something that transcends these bland guys who, when put in a bland story with a bland leading lady are DOA.

I am with you 100% on the whole friendship element of the show that died with Maddie, Gwen/Will leaving. I was really happy to see the latter 2 go as the writers never let the characters breathe (Meg and Paul anyone?) and burdened them with the most annoying of never-ending baby sagas.

Will is Bab's son and I'd rather see Will than Paul any day. Gwen? She'd need something so extraordinary to offset the overexposure factor. And the idea of having to see Gwen crying about how her brother killed her baby's mother and would make me turn that TV off for good.

But maybe bring Will, Maddie, Luke, Noah, Casey, and a couple of other core characters, like Lucy, Duke, Andy Dixon!!!!!, and even Dani's mom. I'd throw in Jade and possibly a Bianca (recast of course) and blend in these 20/30/40 somethings in more than linear love interests that fall apart when they hire bland or annoying actors. The Aaron/Ali/Chris/.... cue get the heck out.

I guess the recurring theme here is that what captures my interest is left of center casting involving actors that pop out of the TV. I am a huge Casey fan and I can't say that it has anything to do with his story-lines/looks as he makes everything work his eyes and body movements. I'd also have Goutman BEG that Larry Bryggman rejoin the show as the show needs the male Susan back to play off Bob and cement the generational elements of the show. Heck he and Luci could have a second around....

with dusty coming back...

I think that they should spare the viewers and end things between him and emily, I wonder if they could pair him up with dani, that would probably make a good triangle, but I've always hated the emily charecter, so i dont know. the things that I would like to see on this easily redeemable show are:

1. Martha back

2. Paul and meg, broken up once and for all.

3. For the writers to turn meg into the charecter she was when she first showed up (No bitching in almost every single episode)

4. allison gone, shes useless, period.

5. Lucy back, its been too long, dusty shouldve found them by now, and I actually liked lucy.

6. For brad to get a divorce from katie after realizeing he loves janet, leaving town with both janet and liberty(yes, Id sacrifice Brad to get rid of those two)

7.Simon to come back- come on

8. carjack reunion almost, but before anything is offical, simon should show up.

9. Holden to be spanked by lily for being such a naughty boy. Im talking about angry wrestle sex to loosen that tight ass up!

10. Noah to cheat on luke, resulting in luke having to cry over fresh outta jail and back in town Matt, which leads up to a REAL relationship; discovery, dates, sex,all while shooing off noah who just wont quit bugging luke. I think that with matt, I would bring with him two Extremely rich and powerful worried sick parents who dont want luke dead, but try to keep matt and luke apart, but fail.

11. craig and rosanna to come back and for them to be no way involved with meg, I'd love to see a craig, rosanna, paul triangle (I could so make it work) just imagine craig saving rosanna for something so horrorifying(she'd have to be crying intensely, hugging him after he's saved her) that she'd fall back in love with him, I would tie james into this somehow.

12. Im outta Ideas! how'd I do? wait, I'd like meg to get involved with simon resulting in a katie/meg fight over the guy, and you'd have to pick a side too! ;) then I would have dusty get involved and ignore dani like he ignored meg with jennifer just b/c he says meg is his friend and he doesnt want to see her get hurt, but then accidentally ends up sleeping with katie, who then simon is disgusted with. I dont know, but SOMEWHERE in this all I add a physical fight between katie and meg. carly and jack would be reunited, but this time carly would have amnesia(due to the brain lesion coming back w/ a vengence, it'd be cured and all, but with a side affect), and not be made out to be the bad guy this time, I think that I'd have her tricked into falling in love with one of the villians(craig, or james? a new villian? I cant figure who to put in this role but if it was craig or james it'd be after they've been defeated in their other SLs) with jack fighting to get her to see the truth. just imagine when carly gets her memory back, it would foil the villian's plans and remind everyone of the power and magic between carly and jack.

WHEW! now I came up with these Ideas in what, 20 minutes? damn I wish I was the head writer.

With Dusty coming back...

There might actually be enough eye-candy on the show to make up for the pathetic state of Nuke. F*ck Dusty was SO hot!
Defft's picture

Duke would have to be a recast

The actor playing him died of autoerotic asphyxiation.

But I agree, some good core characters from awhile back.  Heck, I'd even settle for Caleb and that whiney Julie!

(And shouldn't Angel and Seth have kids old enough to be turning up on the show now?)

Anthony D. Langford's picture

Recalling My History

If I remember correctly, Angel couldn't have kids, but I can't remember why.  When she and Holden were married, they had adopted a little girl, Noelle, who was ultimately taken away from them.  It's shocking (and a little sad) that I recall that much about the storyline.

EDIT:   I had to find out why Angel couldn't have kids and it was because she became sterile aborting her father's child (her father had been sexually abusing her).  So she and Seth couldn't have any bio-kids, but they could've adopted a few.  But since so many of the Snyder kids are adopted (Luke and Parker to name two), they certainly could have done that.

Defft's picture

Right, thanks

I wasn't watching regularly during those years.  Really only saw the end of Holden and Angel's marriage when he was getting back with Lily (how many times have those two split up, messed around with others and gotten back together now?).

Actually, in Soap Opera time, Julie's older kids are probably old enough to have adult kids of their own.

And whatever happened to Ellie Snyder?  She was my favorite.

springintoaction's picture

Ellie rocked! I'd love to see her "replace" Meg.

.... and if she'd bring Kirk Anderson back with her, all would be so much better. The show needs also needs villains like Tonio Reyes and guys that all like alike and sound alike.

With regard to what happened with Ellie, here's the scoop as per soapcentral.com:

"When a sonogram revealed that their child would be severely malformed, Ellie unilaterally decided on an abortion. Angry, Kirk (as well as Ellie's sister, Meg) lit into her in front of several people at the Yacht Club. The next day, after talking to Emma and Iva, Ellie left town, realizing that she wanted to focus on her professional life rather than her family."

The actress who played Ellie left the show in 1992 and the character must still be working on that personal life.

Check out this clip below as it sounds like it would be up your alley. Check out the first Meg in action and how she interacted with Tonio, Lucinda at her most Lucinda, Barbara before they made her character more interesting, Emma looking like was weighed a 100 pounds, and MOST IMPORTANTLY.......

Evidence that the Snyder refrigerator was not always the size of a carton of milk. Unless I am off, this one is the only and only real Snyder fridge which was replaced for a few days by the one that John Dixon bought for Emma (she of course refused such a an "extravagant" gift) or this heap of _____ that is a miniature version of the old one and feeds half of Oakdale :-)

Defft's picture

Wow, thanks!

That clip really took me back.  It's around when I started watching ATWT occasionally.  I don't even remember the first Meg, but am amazed that her brother Holden has aged 21 years over the last 21 years, but she has apparently only aged 10 (and grown six inches).  Paul seems to have aged 25-30 years in that time.  Gotta love the way time passes on a soap.

Cool to see that the producers and casting agents had made a real effort to make sure that all of the Snyder girls resembled each other (even Lily).

And I don't remember much about Josh Snyder/Strickland (Lily's Dad).  Was he brain-damaged?  He certainly spoke slowly and awkwardly in that clip.  I know William Fichtner doesn't speak that way naturally.

As much as I liked Kirk and Ellie together, I'm a little dubious.  Remember when the brought Shannon and Duncan back a few years ago, and what a dud they turned out to be the second time around?

David Ehrenstein's picture

Let's face it --

Soaps stink on ice. And ATWT is no exception to that rule.
