as total viewers shot up (after a few lousy weeks) while most shows bled. The show continues its inability to reel in those prized 18-34/18-49 females, but maybe it should stop trying so hard with younger women. Who knows.... I have a feeling that the Dusty comeback might bring in a few more rubberneckers. Will they hit and run and DOOL viewers tend to do? We'll see.

Martha Byrne (real-Lily) speaks out on Nuke and ATWT
Great interview with the classy actress who played Luke's mom and was on the show since she was 15 years old.

I Agree
That was a wonderful interview with Martha Byrne. She is a class act all the way. The one thing that really got to me as a long time fan of the show was her comment about how Douglas Marland would've loved to have written the Luke and Noah storyline. I have no doubt that he would've loved writing it and the result would've been sooooooo much better than what we've gotten. I'm not talking in terms of kissing and stuff like that, but in terms of the way the characters were depicted and their portrayal and the writing. The really important details. But the show overall would be better than what we're seeing now to be sure.
But ATWT drives me crazy in how it sets things up great, then shoots itself in the foot over and over and over again by being sloppy, slipshod and just ignoring the little things. I've always felt this show's strength is in it's day to day writing. They do great writing and great scenes between the characters. They can have great scenes between Carly and Jack or Carly and Janet (who I'm truly starting to love as sort of friends) or Holden and Lily or even the boys (when they are actually on screen). That stuff works. But it's the overall storytelling and plotting that is awful. It's hard to be invested or care when stories jump from dumb plot points to dumb plot points. And what's particularly frustrating about ATWT is that there really are no repercussions, like in the Holden/Carly affair. As Martha said, it happened much too fast. But then this show has a whole moves way too fast in how it tells it's stories.
Though sometimes the actors do sabetoge themselves, such as Roger Howarth (Paul) who is absoutley awful. He has that same snarl on his face whether he's shouting, throwing things across the room or telling Meg he loves her. And is anyone looking forward to the Dusty/Meg/Paul triangle that we're about to be lucky enough to see play out? Not me. Yuck.
I also thought the same thing about Douglas Marland and Nuke
It was a little sad to read this amazing interview as the actress gets "it" even more than we do and it must suck to have been such an integral part of a show's success only to see it butchered in ways that most of us can't even see. She really gets the huge issues as per her take on the Carly and Holden thing needing to last soooo much longer as it was part of a bigger picture. Putting glue on Carly and Jack after all that has happened would feel so unearned and a total waste of why writers break up couples to begin with. It's all about the story swings, and not the destination.
I am glad that I got to see Martha and Jon (Holden) in action as their story invested me more than Nuke ever has, or probably ever will.

Martha is class
It's odd to hear Martha talk about character driven story lines, because I never saw that awareness at any of the soap fan sites and it's all we talk about here at AfterElton.
I have great respect for Byrne, I doubted my respect could grow but then she says, It’s like being in a bad relationship. Sometimes, they’re just not that into you, you know.
ATWT lost class, for some reason they weren't into it.
"Had any producer ever gone to the press to discuss people’s contracts?" They said, "Never."
"I don’t want to burden (the fans) with how [ugly] this industry can be at times. I had faith in the fans to know the difference between spin and the truth."
"I’m really blessed. It makes me very emotional to tell you how lucky I am and how aware of how abundant my spirit is."
I just gotta love that woman..
I am with you and credit also has to go to the out Branco for...
Martha's pain came across but her dignity and reality check of them "not being so into her" drives it home. It can sound cheesy out of context. While Martha has been among the most eloquent and has the lousy treatment by CG to prove it, you'd be surprised how many actors get it. Michael Park (Jack) and Ellen Dolan (Margo) have been pretty vocal about it and has also been the case with actors in shows which where never too character-driven.
They all want what we want as it's the most fun to play and what got them fans in the first place. They know that the best way to fight competition is by sticking to what they can do better than any other genre.

I think not
That triangle would be rancid....
If the writers managed to tap into Dusty's less dark side, he could be just what the doctor ordered. I am sure that they'll screw it up, but anyone who's seen Dusty with Lucinda (before he went all "Johnny-crazy) or in many scenes with Jen, might see that the actor can have appeal and at least looks different than Chris/Mike/Holden.
Your point about about bringing back old favorites is on the money, although most of these characters mentioned are recasts and even when they have not been, there should be a rule preventing show-runners from bringing back or introducing new characters unless there is a defined canvas-based need rather than throwing a "male" or a "female" love interest who might not pan out. Casting is everything so even is the story is there, they must wait until an actor who charms the pants of them and shows chemistry with several actors shows his mug. With regard to Mike, he was brought in exclusively for Meg, and as soon as that was going nowhere they dropped it and we had another body on board without need.
I think that Dusty's return could be great but he can't salvage this mess anymore than Martha Byrne or anyone else could. If P&G would can Goutman and Passanante, this show could still work so well as it has moments when it's like the movie Awakenings....
