Gay Gamers: RPGs and the like

Looking to chat about gaming, including: RPGs (esp. AD&D), LARPs, etc. Heck, I'd even post about board games or card games! ;)

sexuality in RPGs

So am I the only one who avoids pursuing my character's sexuality in AD&D? I've always avoided it... until now, that is! I had always played with straight male friends (and/or their girlfriends) and rolled my eyes in disgust whenever someone would run after the "elf maiden" or "bar maid".

Well, now I guess it's my turn because my flamboyant, theatre-loving romeo is getting his turn!

I'm interested to find out what kind of situations I'll find myself in now, and if it's going to make a difference in my enjoying the game. I can only predict it can (and hopefully will)!

Would love to hear similar stories from others out there, no matter what you're RPG of choice is! :)

What's a AD&D LARP?

I forget not everyone knows what I know?!  I certainly don't know what everyone else knows, you know!;)That said, I should probably define "AD&D".  That's "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons", and "No." I am NOT a Dungeon Master.  ;)I currently just purchased the "Neverwinter Nights" AD&D game (that you can play on PC or MAC, sometimes called a CRPG) and am LOVING IT!! :))I will also mention that since I created this thread, I should explain the other terms I used for it's description:RPG (Role Playing Game)LARP (Live Action Role Playing Game.  Also known as LRP)While I'm no expert in any of these, I enjoy talking about such things.(... Now where did I plut that Wand of Frost?)

Neverwinter Nights is

Neverwinter Nights is awesome, especially the new version. I can't wait until really well-done fan-made modules start popping up, like the Eternum series. (Have you played Elegia and Excrucio Eternum? Incredible stuff - really creepy!)

Neverwinter Mac

OMG! I am literally just beginning my first solo adventure, and eating it up!! I LOVE it, too. Unfortunately, I have a lot of trouble finding the latest modules, etc. because I'm on OS 10.3.9 and most of the new stuff is all PC. Perhaps when I upgrade to OS 10.4 I will be able to enjoy a true cross-platform capability.

I've heard from friends that play Neverwinter Nights2 that I can download patches via the site to be able to play online with them. I have no idea if this will work, but I will no doubt totally be all over this soon.

One of the reasons that I busted out and bought this game was the ability to design/ create your own modules! The software seems to make being a DM more manageable and FUN (which is the bottom line, isn't it?)!

I think it would be awesome to design a gay tavern and incorporate gay characters/ situations!

If you know any on-line, gay-friendly servers for this game, PLEASE DO TELL! I'll be exploring those options in the near future. :)

NWN1 modules which are LGBT-friendly

I have not much information about NWN1 multiplayer server. However, I do know there are several single player modules created which are LGBT-friendly.

- Citadel, created by the author of "Dream Boy", Jim Grimsley, and his team member, Madeleine St. Romain and Jeff Tyson features a city which consist of and accept misfits in other universe. The citizen in it are either LGBT or LGBT-friendly. The protagonist has been banished from their homeland and seek refegue in Citadel. However, the city, or accrately said, the founders of the city, have made many enemies and they want to invade the city...Up to now there are one male and one female henchpeople romancable for gay and lesbian PC respectively. The authors are now planning to enhance the romance plot and planning to have several henchpeople who are not romancable before available to the PC now.

- Engima Island Ch.1 & 2, the main theme of the series is about freedom, it can be living style, beliefs(religious or not). There are one female in Ch.1 and one male and two female henchpeople romancable with both sex. Also, there will have a marriage available to the PC at the end of Ch.2.

- Ch.2 in Island Adventure series is also LGBT-friendly - one of the male henchpeople and another female henchpeople are romancable with both sex. Apart from the romance, the plot of the series is fabulous and it is a must to play. The only setback is the authors have not determined whether to build ch.3 in NWN1 or NWN2 yet.

Unfortunately, I'm still

Unfortunately, I'm still with the Dark Side (Microsoft), so I can't help you with modules that work with Mac's operating system. But on another note, YES, there definitely needs to be some gay-themed NWN modules! One of the most annoying things about NWN1 was that a male character HAD to hook up with Aribeth and a female character HAD to hook up with Aarin. A little more flexibility might have been nice.

NWN guilds

I hope you didn't ruin anything for me by telling me I HAD to hook-up Aribeth!! I haven't completed the solo module yet! :(

Oh well, on another note, I was looking at the guilds and such and thought I should create my own GLBT friendly guild.

http://nwn.bioware.com/guilds_registry/viewguild.html?gid=15026

If you know of others, or gay-friendly portals, modules, etc. LET ME KNOW!!

:)

My hope is that by displaying I'm an "officially" registered gay-friendly guild on the BIOWARE website, that the creators might take notice and give it's users more options, etc.

;)

Oh no, you don't HAVE to

Oh no, you don't HAVE to hook up with Aribeth. You have the option of doing so, but she's your only option if you want a romantic sub-plot at all. Sorry for the spoiler.

I don't know of any other GLBT-friendly guilds, but cudos to you for making one. :-)

Aribeth = Drama Queen

OMG! Aribeth is such a drama queen! Even if I were straight, I don't think I would hook up with her. Now, Aarin I could definitely do!

LOTR online

Anyone playthe computer RPG Lord of the Rings ONLINE?
http://www.lotronline.com/

Well, if you do, I've discovered there is already a LBGT fellowship called the "Council of the Secret Fire." It's on the "unofficial roleplay server" called "Landroval".

There is also an LGBT kinship on Windfola called "the Stonewall Rebellion".

You can check out a lot of clips of this game on YOUTUBE if you're curious:

OH! BTW, I don't think it exists yet for MAC!! Humph! :(

Looks pretty spiffy, Dwiz

Looks pretty spiffy, Dwiz (and yes, that is a word! :P).

Doubt I'll have much opportunity to try any new games so long as I'm building out Battledale...

How to make your NWN PCs look good in the buff

I just discovered a great HAKPACK for Neverwinter Nights that allows you to see characters nude or in skimpy undies?! Sure enough I tested it out and could make my character show off what he was packing under his armor! I think it's kinda funny to add the adult humor to it, and maybe use it in a custom module, etc.

If you play NWN, go to the online vault and check it out for yourself!

Not quite an RPG but...

I did play a game called Singles once.  You were able to pick a gay character to play but he was a tad stereotypical to say the least.  I hear that in the sequel, you can play any of the characters as gay.

As for computer-based RPGs, I gave up on Fable pretty early on but I believe that you could marry other men in that game.  Also, I'm playing Enchanted Arms on the XBOX 360 and, although not playable, there is a gay character in that too - once again, he's pretty stereotypical...

I've been playing Warcraft

I've been playing Warcraft since the first game came out, and have played World of Warcraft since the open beta. And I actually had an incredibly positive experience in the game, as I was one of the leaders of the guild I was in, and helped to make it a very friendly environment. We had more girls in our guild than just about any other on the server, and more out gay guys than any guild I've ever encountered. It was incredibly gratifying to me, because I was able to provide a safe online community, with my ventrilo (voice communications platform) server for several boys who were in the process of coming to term with their sexuality. This isn't to toot my own horn, so to speak, but given how filled with casual and outright homophobia the online gaming world is, I fought long and hard to secure a place where anyone could feel safe and at home, and I made a lot of good friends and educated a lot of straight people along the way.

Right now though I mostly play custom Warcraft III games, with a community that of people that I've known for nearly 6 years now. And it was actually on a Warcraft III custom game forums that I first came out to people who weren't my parents/therapist. The guys from Tides of Blood were all supportive and welcoming, and just that simple acceptance even from people who I barely knew (at the time) and never met in person, was a great support. I was just glad that I could pass that support along to other people that needed it. Given how this side of the gaming community is rarely represented, I just wanted to also say that there are a lot of good, supportive people out there. Even if they know next to nothing of what it feels like to be a gay person, I enjoy educating them =)

all is fair in love and WARCRAFT

I've heard lots of positive things about WARCRAFT, and your story just adds to my desire to try it out sometime. Does your guild still exist? Can you post any info on specific guilds that are LBGT friendly, or any characters or players to look for?

Regardless, thanks for sharing your experiences.

I'm such a gaming recluse

I never got into the MMORPG's.  I did try once a few years ago and started playing Ultima Online, but it just didn't click.  I get really nervous that people are going to think I'm totally lame for not knowing which spell does what or wearing the wrong helmet in the wrong part of the forest, or something.  even playing Halo, I get a panic attack from the 12 year olds on there.  Funny thing is, in real life, I'm usually very outgoing and fun to be around, but in an online game, it's like I'm back in high school.

Inclusive roleplaying

Pen and paper roleplaying games are always funner when they include gay characters, especially if they are not immediately revealed so players have to figure out their motivation. www.gayroleplayers.org has a free online rpg tool for generating gay-inclusive characters so all referees and gamemasters can easily incorporate them into their adventures.

You guys

Smart guys are a plus.  Cute smart guys are a huge plus.  (Yeah I mean Dwiz & Ian).

But wtf are you guys talking about?  Is this like D&D?  I had friends who played it in high school, but they were into spells and shields -- not boys.

Don't trouble yourself Doctor -- I'm a celebrity, I'll write my own prescription.
