Beautiful Thing and other British movies with gay theme

I loved the article on Beautiful Thing. I forgot how much I loved that movie. I totally fell for Ste, and I loved their relationship. There is another British gay teen flick about an athlete and another fellow who have a secret relationship. I loved it, but for the life of me, can't remember the title, durn it all.

I love Brit flicks and am curious what other British gay films folks remember. My Beautiful Laundrette is one of my favorites and so is Billy Elliott.

The title you're thinking of is...

"Get Real," which I actually preferred to "Beautiful Thing."

A couple others I enjoyed were "Bedrooms and Hallways" and "Cowboys and Angels."

Cowboys and Angels . . .

. . . is an Irish film. Yeah, I know, but there are several Irish people who would never forgive me if I passed up a chance to make that distinction. No hard feelings? Good! ;)

I Hart Beautiful Things

Brian, you encapsulated the movie brilliantly in your article. It really wanted me to see this sweet film again.

A film I could recommend is “Apartment Zero” starring brit actor Colin Firth and … ahh – so dreamy – drool - pant – pant  - Hart Bochner.

I remember seeing this film in a theatre and the audience reaction was palpable when Hart Bochner struts around in a towel after the shower scene.

Apartment Zero

I actually reviewed Apartment Zero last month -- it just got a loving DVD release of the full uncut film (with all the homoerotic stuff!) for the first time ever. Be sure to check it out!

Uncut Apartment Zero

Thanks Brian for letting me know about your article on the DVD re-issue of Apartment Zero.

I just read it - excellently written - as always.

I can’t believe I missed your review!!!!!!!!!

And I call myself an avid, devoted AfterElton reader…tsk…tsk…on me. My Catholic upbringing compels me to feel shame and repent.

I will say three “Crocodile Rocks” and nine at full throttle (in my best Kiki Dee voice)  “Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart” before I go to sleep tonight.

Thanks!

That's very kind. If you can work in a "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", I'm sure you'll be absolved.

Get Real

Get Real is about two young boys at a high school in (I think) northern England -- one a quiet, dweeby lad, the other a handsome jock -- who become secret lovers. It's a good film, with a terrific self-outing scene at the end, so I'd imagine if you liked Beautiful Thing, you'd like Get Real. On the other hand, my roommate hated it, so what can one say....

Beautiful Thing, Get Real,

Beautiful Thing, Get Real, Bent, Maurice, Velvet Goldmine, My Beautiful Laundrette, Borstal Boy (Although it's really about bisexuality and it's Irish, not English). Those are all good.

Still Beautiful

I first saw this movie when it was released, and thought it was a very sweet, touching movie dealing with the coming out story of these two young British men.  It was both poignant and amusing, and the actors that played the rolls of Jamie and Steve were very unaffected and believeable.

I just watched the movie again on Logo, and I am happy to say it has withstood the test of time.  Perhaps because the story is ageless, the acting was realistic, and the plot remains believable and honest.

All in all, I think that it remains one of the all time best in portraying a young mans sexual awakening, and the bittersweet time that we all remember when to come out was difficult, but to no come out was more so.

"It takes a village (to make Village People)"

Ditto all these great films, but everybody needs to go back and see "The Leather Boys," a marvelous film of the Kitchen Sink school about sexual ambivalence and the lack of options available to gays in 1960s England.  It was directed by Sidney J. Furie (yes, he of "Iron Eagle" fame) and stars the beautfiul Colin Campbell (who then practically disappeared from film), Rita Tushingham (she of "A Taste of Honey" and "The Knack") and the great Dudley Sutton, who played Tinker on "Lovejoy."  It's in noirish black and white and the title refers to boys on motorcycles, so don't get the wrong idea!

"The Fruit Machine" is absolutley incredible.  One of my fondest movie memories is of Tony Forsyth winning the dance prize at Robbie Coltrane's club.  He does a modified strip to Man 2 Man's "Male Stripper" that is as sweet as it is sexy.  The movie is also known as "Wonderland" in the States.  Divine's "You Think You're a Man" and "I'm So Beautiful" are on the soundtrack.  The former was later featured on an episdoe of QAF.

And who could resist Lee Williams in "The Wolves of Kromer"?  The closing credits to this one are the best part.

Don't forget "if..."!

There's a beautiful gay love story inside this classic of 60's rebellion. I've always loved it (and I wrote the liner notes for the Criterion Collection DVD.) Lindsay Anderson was gay as was Richard Warwick -- the older of the film's schoolboy couple. He went on to work with Derek Jarman. And like Derek he died of AIDS.
