News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

The Amazing Race

Well Racers, our favorite show is half way through its All-Star Season – what do you think so far?

One of the highlights for me was when Danny and Oswald chased Phil around the pit stop!

What were some of your favorite moments?

Who do you think will win?

Who do you want to win?

Last week we saw Rob and Amber be eliminated from the race (none too soon say many gay fans) and this week Uchenna and Joyce finished in last place.

It was a non-elimination round so they can stay BUT they must be number one next week OR they will be given a 30 minute penalty.

Sometimes such a long penalty can really hurt because it allows the other teams a chance to get caught up. If Uchenna and Joyce don’t arrive at the number one spot this coming Sunday night, they will have to sit on the side lines as the clock goes tick–tick–tick. Ouch.

Charla and Mirna (cousins) surprised everyone, including themselves by coming in at number one! Way to go ladies!

Who are your favorite teams this season?

(My favorite two teams are Joe and Bill & Danny and Oswald)

Who is your least favorite team this season?

(My least favorite team is Eric and Danielle - here’s hoping they get eliminated next!)

Do you think the show is better with Rob and Amber gone?

or

Do you miss Boston Rob and Ambah?

Current team rankings:

1.    Charla and Mirna (cousins)

2.    Dustin and Kandice (beauty queens)

3.    Teri and Ian (married parents)

4.    Danny and Oswald (gay best friends)

5.    Joe and Bill (gay life partners)

6.    Eric and Danielle (dating)

7.    Uchenna and Joyce (married)

I don't much like Bill and Joe

But I love the Chas! Danny and Oswald are just great. And I really want to see them win. After this week, I want to see Eric get eaten by a lion in Africa. What a jerk! The others are all kind of not very interesting to me. Ucehnna and Joyce are all right, but really, for being the All Stars they're kind of blah. It's nice the gay guys are the most interesting~

Amazing Race's Eric to be eaten by lion in Africa!

“I want to see Eric get eaten by a lion in Africa"- Palmer

LOL

Last episode when Eric called Joe and Bill “old queens” …I thought to myself, yeah – they are – and they beat you to the finishing line for this leg of the race!! Eric can be such a moron.

I used to think he was cute…

How does that saying go…ugly is as ugly says…something like that.

Speaking of cute – I have such a crush on Uchenna.

Anybody else keep wishing that the roadblock instructions would say…”only one team member can perform the task and Uchenna must be shirtless…”  J

Team Cha Cha Cha all the way!

I'm voting for Team Cha Cha Cha to win this race. I loved them since season 2, and they were the ones that everyone learned to use the natives of the country for help...literally, but they were always nice and kind to the people. I was so disappointed they came in 4th place back then. I hope they can be in the top 3 this season.

Does anyone miss Rob and Amber on TAR?

Danny and Oswald make for a fun very entertaining hour of TV.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from these two Latin cuties:

Oswald: “Danny and I, we are two Cubans who came to this country with nothing. Sweetheart, if you get in my way, I will run you over. However, we are not going to do that out of maliciousness…”

Oswald: “My face is going through menopause.”

Danny: “I think I was a man in a previous life.”

Oswald: “Be the fish! Become the fish!”

The Amazing Race Recap

The Amazing Race: All Stars

On this 6th leg of The Amazing Race, teams left the port city of Maputo, Mozambique, flew 1400 miles to Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, and took a dhow (sailing vessel) to the island of Zanzibar.

Racers, are you ready?

Team Cha-Cha-Cha (Oswald & Danny) shared their philosophy of the race and then demonstrated their unique sense of style as they prepared to depart Maputo

Their Style:

Oswald, holding up their first clue for this leg of this race to the camera, demonstrated the opening of the clue pack with a lovely sweeping hand gesture, while Danny laughed and referred to him as “Mr. Hand Model”.

Their Philosophy:

Oswald: “The stress of the race is getting to people. When people get caught up in the competitiveness of it, I think you lose a part of who you are as a person…I think it’s really important to go back to what keeps you grounded in order to run the race a little bit better and really have fun with it”.

Team Guido (Joe & Bill) also shared their philosophy as they opened their clue pack: “There was a major mood shift as the race field gets smaller… in a field of very, very competitive racers. We know now that we cannot trust anyone.”

Off to Maputo Airport

Getting out of Mozambique initially proved to be the great equalizer as no one could get in line for tickets until 5:00 AM. The teams were told the earliest direct flight out was at 8:30 AM but that it was full and they would all need to go on standby. Everyone decided to wait and hope for the best.

Everyone but… Charla & Mirna.

Feeling very confident after their 1st place finish in the previous leg, the newly christened Too Hot to Handle, Charla & Mirna decided to investigate other flight options. They found an earlier 7:00 AM flight to Johannesburg, but the connecting flight to Dar Es Salaam was full. They took a big gamble and Mirna boldly booked Too Hot on the Jo-burg flight anyway, choosing to believe they would get their much-needed standby tickets.

The remaining teams were content to wait until 8:30 AM, at which time the airline informed them, again, that the direct to Dar Es Salaam flight was full. Why were they so surprised?

Meanwhile, having already landed in Jo-burg while the other teams were still waiting for the next flight out of Maputo, Too Hot seeks assistance from a cute, blond-haired male airport employee named Christo, who happily joins with them in an impromptu prayer circle! Lo & behold, Charla & Mirna get their tickets to the connecting flight. Divine intervention?

The remaining teams, still stuck in Maputo, are finally able to leave, but on a much later non-direct flight to Dar Es Salaam, via a connecting flight from Jo-berg.

Please standby (again)

Upon arrival in Johannesburg at 1:00 PM, the teams are told they will have to book standby for the next flight out.

Ah, airports, the great equalizer…

The teams’ frustrations are evident but are heightened when it is announced that there is limited seating and that Teri & Ian, Joe & Bill won’t get seats on the next flight out. They watch in dismay as the other teams board the plane for Dar Es Salaam

Cha-Cha-Cha, The Beauty Queens (Dustin & Kandice) and Eric & Danielle settle in to their seats on the plane, with Eric exclaiming, “I can’t believe it actually happened, we’re still waiting for someone to run after us and tell us to stop!”

Eric’s Kharma

No sooner does Eric speak then he & Danielle find themselves being escorted off the plane due to an airline error – they were given someone else’s seats! As they leave the plane Eric lamely shouts out that he’ll give 50 bucks to anyone willing to give up their seats! As if…

Strictly Standby

The next available flight out to Dar Es Salaam isn’t until the next day (!) but the airline gives Eric & Danielle priority standby as compensation for bumping them off. Teri & Ian and Joe & Bill get the same information from the airline but are told that seats are available to them on a “strictly standby” basis. They don’t even get offered complimentary peanuts.

On the road to Zanzibar… so to speak

Mirna’s big gamble back in Maputo paid off and Too Hot was way ahead of all the other teams at this point. But they were unable to sail to the island of Zanzibar the afternoon of their arrival due to an impending storm. This put Too Hot’s lead in jeopardy as they weren’t able to get on a dhow (sailing vessel) until 5:30 AM the next day. Oswald & Danny arrived at the dock ahead of Dustin & Kandice, Uchenna & Joyce, which meant the Cha-Cha-Cha’s sailed together with Charla & Mirna on the first boat out to Zanzibar

Hey, Sailor

While awaiting their 5:30 AM departure at the dock, Oswald & Danny hammed it up, tossing out pick up lines and informing an approaching Charla & Mirna that they’re “working this corner”, which goes over – pardon the pun – Charla’s & Mirna’s heads.

Oswald: What are you doing in this lonely dock this late at night?

Danny: Waiting for a boat.

Oswald: Are you looking for some company? I come cheap.

On the trip to Zanzibar, Charla throws up over the side of the boat and Oswald helps her out by applying a cold cloth to the back of her neck. Cheap and caring, that Oswald is a catch!

History Minute

On the second dhow to Zanzibar, Uchennna reminds wife Joyce and The Beauty Queens that at its peak, Zanzibar was a slave gateway to Europe; 500 years ago, African slaves travelled this same route.

Detour – Solve It or Schlep It!

Too Hot & the Cha-Cha-Cha’s arrived at Zanzibar in 1st and 2nd place respectively. Both teams chose to do the SOLVE IT task (completing a giant wooden puzzle) instead of schlepping 2 heavy logs a mile or so, on a wooden cart. The Cha-Cha-Cha’s finished the puzzle first and made their way to Kikungwi, a tiny village in bush country, to get their next clue. Charla & Mirna were not far behind.

Shop Before You Drop

On the way to Kikungwi, Oswald & Danny decide to shop for some replenishment at a roadside fruit stand before they dropped from dehydration and over exposure to the sun. This allowed Charla & Mirna to slip past them and arrive at the road block ahead of Oswald & Danny.

Rungu Roadblock

Here, the teams had to “hunt” a ceramic target using a traditional wooden weapon (a Rungu) of the Maasai tribe. Mirna quickly hit her target and then did an exuberant victory cartwheel. She and Charla screamed in joy as they grabbed their clue with the directions to the next Pit Stop.

Pit Stop at the Fortress

Oswald, on the way to the pit stop:

“Charla & Mirna are formidable competitors… they can beat the bejesus out of us.”

Danny chimes in, “We won’t stop for fruit.”

After a few minutes spent trying to find the right building and then the entrance to the fort, both teams made their way to the Pit Stop where Phil welcomed Charla & Mirna in 1st place for the second consecutive time, and shortly afterward, Oswald & Danny finished as team #2.

What did we win, Phil?

Phil: ‘…you’ve each won a 12-foot catamaran’.

Charla & Mirna (looking very perplexed): “Huh?”

Phil: “It’s a double-hulled sail boat”.

Charla & Mirna: ‘…oh, okay’; jumping and hugging follows as they are obviously thrilled just finishing in first place again.

3rd Place is the Charm

The Beauty Queens put their abs to work and haul logs while Uchenna & Joyce manage to get ahead and into 3rd place by quickly completing the puzzle task at the Detour. At the Rungu throw, Uchenna is clearly thrilled to have, “jumped with the Maasai”. He and Joyce make it to the Pit Stop mat in 3rd spot, but they had to take the mandatory 30-minute penalty imposed on them for finishing last in the previous non-elimination leg (at the end of last week’s episode). But, surprise, The Beauty Queens were further behind than they appeared to be and Phil welcomed Uchenna & Joyce as 3rd place finishers; Dustin & Kandice came in 4th

Back of the Pack

Despite being removed from the plane in Jo-berg due to an airline error, Eric & Danielle managed a respectable 5th place on the mat.  For the two remaining teams, Teri & Ian, Joe & Bill, it was well into the wee hours of the night before we saw them sail off together to the island of Zanzibar.

It had been a frustrating leg for the 2 teams, with Ian remarking:

“Team Guido’s are great people but we don’t want to be eliminated… anybody but us”.

At the island, Joe & Bill quickly completed the puzzle detour and dashed off to the roadblock but weren’t cocky about their lead, realizing that they could win or lose this leg on the turn of a dime. It was neck-and-neck from this point on, as Ian quickly “killed” his ceramic prey at the roadblock. He & Teri were soon on the road to the Pit Stop but it was Team Guido, Joe & Bill, hand-in-hand, that walked on to the mat in 6th place – they’re still in the race! Exhausted, they hugged each other.

Nobody Loves Me Like You Do

Sadly, Teri & Ian finished last (but it was close). It was bittersweet for them but they are a happy couple who are very much in love with each other.

Teri: “Ian loves me like no one else can”.

Ian: “I wouldn’t want to be in life without her”.

Two Hours

God, the second hour had me on the floor.  To go from the sombre sight of Polish concentration camps to the surreal sight of beauty queens and Armenian dwarves vomiting noisily on the floor of a kielbasa factory was delightful and gobsmacking.  And that was before Charla took two face-first naps in the dirt while wearing medieval armor and being dragged in circles by a very confused horse.

Oh, my sides.

At one point Joyce goes looking for Chopin in a public bathroom.

Now if the clue had said "Find Chopin's last movement"... I could understand.

Amazing Race Episode Results / Update

LEG 9 (Krakow to Kuala Lampur)

RESULTS:

1. Dustin & Kandice (Beauty Queens)-win Retro Scooters

2. Charla & Mirna (Cousins)

3. Eric & Danielle (Dating)

4. Oswald & Danny (Gay Best Friends)

Eliminated: Uchenna & Joyce (Married)

The connecting flight via Frankfurt left them only one hour to catch the flight to Kuala Lampur. Unfortunately, the flight from Krakow to Frankfurt was late by 10 minutes and Uchenna and Joyce were stranded in Frankfurt with the next flight not departing until the next day.

Since they were at least half a day behind in the race and it was an elimination round the producers allowed for Uchenna and Joyce to skip the roadblock and detour and go straight to the pit stop.

Ugh, Eric and Danielle are still in it and

Danny & Oswald came in last. That is definitely not good, but at least Eric was insulting someone else beside the gay time. I noticed he said nice things about Danny and Oswald, but I wonder if that's because he started to realize what a homophobic jerk he was sounding like. Speaking of Danny and Oswald, those two should totally get back together. I just marvel at how they manage to handle conflict between the two of them. They never get mean (like Eric and Danielle), but state their frustrations and then either solve it or just give the other time and space to get over it. You know, like actual adults!

Interesting spoiler...

I'm hearing that the winner for Amazing Race All-Star is a couple that is the least likely to be thought of as winning the race. In my mind, of the 4 couples, that would Mirna & Charla. What do you think of this spoiler?

Mirna and Charla? Oh, lord

I'm not sure I'd like that, but I can't really make up my mind about them. Sometimes they seem very nice and not that dim, then one of them says something completely off the wall that makes me think they are nuts. I guess I could live with anyone winning besides Eric and Danielle, but I have to say I wouldn't want to spend more than fifteen minutes with Mirna and Charla.

It's very interesting...

because the mild spoiler comes from uchenna & joyce's official website. They don't say who actually won, but uchenna hints that he was surprised by the couple who actually won and never thought they would be the ones to cross the finish line first. So, that made me believe to be Mirna & Charla, since they are the couple I would say least likely to cross the finish line first.

However, they have been very lucky the past couple of legs. I mean very lucky with the airplane and all that. With the detours and roadblocks, not so much, but planes...wow.

They do bicker a lot and they are kinda annoying, but bickering people make for interesting entertainment value.

The question I have is will Oswald & Danny get to top 3 this time around or will they up 4th again like last time? They are so good at this. They amaze me. And they're one of the top 4 couples left like last time.

The Amazing Race Update / Results

LEG 11 (Hong Kong to Macau, China) From Wiki: In the Roadblock for this leg of the race, teams had to perform the world's tallest Skyjump (Macau Tower), walking around the outer rim of the observation deck, and then take a tethered jump off of the tower.

The Detour for this leg of the race was Noodle or Dragon. In Noodle, teams had to make two bundles of traditional Chinese noodles. In Dragon, teams had to carry a dragon head and drum and carry it ¾ of a mile to the bay to find the one dragon boat  the dragon's head matched.

QTC: Oswald & Danny started this race with very little money and made a deal with The Beauty Queens to yield Eric and Danielle in exchange for $45.00.

From that point onward Danny & Oswald experienced bad luck and came in last.

Luckily, it was a non-elimination round.

Tsk tsk.

Karma bit the boys hard on this one!

LEG 11 RESULTS:

1. Dustin & Kandice (Beauty Queens)

Each won a "Wave Runner."

2. Charla & Mirna (Cousins)

3. Eric & Danielle (Dating)

4. Oswald & Danny (Gay Best Friends)

NON-Elimination round.

Phew for D&O

This round scared the bejeezus out of me since I was afraid that D&O will wind up 4th place again like last time. Thank goodness for non-elimination...last one too. But the next one is definitely a elimination pit stop. I'm hoping D&O will end up lucky and get first place because they deserve to be in the top 3.

And what Mirna said about Yield & Karma. So true. But if it weren't for their desperation for money, they would never have yielded Eric & Danielle ever. Ugh, I wish Mirna & Charla would have talked to them first and donated some money to them for free (without even yielding).

that many seasons of the show, so it's hard for me to say. But I am definitely enjoying this one. Lots of different types of folks and definitely someone to cheer for. It seems like the standings change everytime so hopefully D&O won't be in last next week. I also really wanted to jump off that tower as it looked like it rocked.
