Neil Patrick Harris onstage at the Bravo A-List Awards with Kathy Griffin's pimped-out mother
Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.
- Some simple celebrity math: Rupert Everett + live microphone = Gossip gold. Oh, and apparently he's great in Blithe Spirit, in which he's appearing on off-days between trashing gay parents and rhapsodizing about the penis sizes of media bigwigs.
- The Huffington Post on how gay marriages in Iowa ... and beyond! ... will actually strengthen hetero marriages.
Nick Adams in Broadway Bares 17
- Nick Adams, John Tartaglia, Jim Caruso and Nicholas Rodriguez are among the out performers featured in the upcoming Leading Men IV concert to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS on May 11. (And it just so happens that four of the guys made our Hot List of theater guys.) Tickets and more info available at Birdland's website.
- I know it's not exactly "Stop the Presses!" time when an instance of gay-baiting occurs near Ryan Seacrest, but when the baiter is Harvey Weinstein and the baitee is NBC president Ben Silverman, it's probably worth noting.
- And finally, just because it's a rainy Monday here in Brooklyn, some shots of some annual penis festival and parade in Kawasaki, Japan. Might be NSFW if you work at a company staffed entirely by people made of wood, clay or candlewax.
And today's Briefs are brought to you by...
This guy!
It's a nice gig
Occasionally GLADD will issue a statement to someone, or get their name associated with an act of discrimination in the news. But their real achievement is hosting a Ball. That they honor and invite people who promote a negative stereotype of gay people is not their real concern. Kudos to Tom O'Neil for pointing that out, and for Brian for letting me know that I'm not alone.
GLAAD honoring As the World Turns
When I was a teen watching soaps with my mother I would have killed for a Luke and Noah story line. I'm so tired of people complaining because it doesn't go "far enough." To suggest the show is anti-gay because there are no scenes of them dry humping in the sheets shows a logic that totally escapes me.
Besides, if they DID act like every other soap opera character (lying, cheating, jumping beds) people would complain because they weren't being positive role models and that ATWT was perpetuating the stereotype of promiscuous gays. It's such a loose-loose situation I wonder that they do it at all.
People need a refresher on the fairy tale about the goose that laid the golden eggs.
Dry humping?
The issue is with inclusiveness, (supposedly what the GLAAD award stands for) treating the gay characters as you do the straight ones. The fact that there was no problem throwing two 15 year olds in the sack while Luke and Noah "waited" for the right time is discrimination, clear and simple. That doesn't deserve an award and it's harmful to pretend that it does. By the way not all soap characters lie, cheat or jump beds, but all committed couples of Luke and Noah's age kiss and boink. If you can't stand the fact that people boink each other, you shouldn't be watching a soap, for gosh sakes! To keep the gays from boinking, was telling the world that the idea of two men having sex was somehow shameful and disgusting. Not a commendable notion, unless you are GLAAD.
As I have said many times before, if ATWT or their audience were unprepared to show a gay couple inclusively, they had no business exploiting them.
Well said nukely. I
Well said nukely.
I actually just posted over on the gays of SOAP blog how i'm at a complete loss of why ATWT received a GLAAD award. It was such a shameful year involving a kissing ban, very limited phyical contact, Ameera, crazy daddy, and Nuke limited to a day or so per week, if that. I mean, fans had to stage a huge protest with some news coverage just to get the guys to share a simple kiss, while all the time their hetrosexual counterparts are sucking face and bed hopping like rabbits. It was and remains insulting, not only to the gay community, but any fans of Luke and Noah. Yet, GLAAD STILL felt they deserved an award. Now the TPTB over at CBS are led to believe they turned in an award winning performance with their Nuke storyline.
Good for Tom O'Neil for stating the obvious.
what does that leave us with?
What is sad isn't so much what ATWT did or didn't do or that anyone gave them any kind of award. What is sad is that this award, GLAAD, has come to symbolize GLBT rights and it is now diminished. The award is meaningless when it can be given to anyone, even those who wish to exploit us. What it says is that this award has nothing to do with the people it is given to (how can I compare Judy Shepard to the producers of ATWT?, and yet they are both deserving of the same accolades according to GLAAD). The award has more to do with the people who are presenting it and who they wish to hob nob with. Like I said, it's a nice gig if you can get it, but it looks like a waste of the community's efforts and money, imho
Thanks, btw.
