No second season for "Sordid Lives"?

It's not too often that behind the scenes squabbles between TV creators and TV networks go public, but it's always interesting when they do!

Via TowleRoad comes word that Sordid Lives creator Del Shores is none too happy with Logo (AfterElton.com's parent company). Why exactly? Shores seems to have two issues — getting the second season of the series underway and payment of residuals.

Pleased with the show and the press it generated, Logo originally ordered a second season of Sordid Lives two weeks after the premiere of the first season. But Logo doesn't actually own the show — Shores' production company does — and Logo's order was contingent on all the financial partners involved continuing their financial contribution. So Logo was onboard, as was Shores, meaning the holdout was the third partner IMG International, which handles the foreign distribution.

Del Shores

At this point, IMG has not signed on, nor do statements by Shores and Logo make it seem likely that IMG will anytime soon.

Del's second issue concerns residuals he says he is owed and that is currently being dealt with by the various guilds that govern the issues. However, that can take several months to settle and in the meantime, Shores says the situation has left him in financial straits.

AfterElton.com contacted Logo to ask about the two issues and the network gave us the following statement:

Logo was committed to a second season of Del Shores’ series Sordid Lives.  However our production partners for this show were unable to obtain the necessary financing in the current economic climate.  We’re very disappointed because the show and all of its incredibly creative talent, including Del, connected so strongly with our viewers.

Still curious about the financial aspect, we followed up on that and were told:

Logo can’t comment on the financial issues that were raised, as these are between Del and a third party production company.

So what to make of all this? From Shore's letter of complaint, it isn't clear exactly who he thinks owes him the money, but Logo says it isn't them. As for the second season, Logo clearly seems to have wanted to go forward with the show, but apparently IMG International must have had some reservations.

What does seem clear, however, is that Sordid Lives has met an untimely death.

It's a shame

This is just so sad, because Sord Lives was honestly one of only two things I watched on Logo with any urgency.  It was creative, had stars, and was a show on a creative road not traveled. I'm certainly not qualified to judge who's right and who's wrong here, but I would think that contracts for these things would be very clear.

Sounds like the true losers are Logo's subscribers/viewers.

This is awful!!

I felt like there was some drama going on behind-the-scenes since it has taken so long. Guess this was it. Logo has even removed Sordid Lives from A-Z list of series. This is very, very, very, very disappointing!!  Is there anyone we can write or otherwise let know we want this show to return???

Sordid Lives

Man, this is a real shame;  isn't there any possiblilty that some other production company will step in?  I was so looking forward to a second series of this show!  "Sordid Lives" was, in fact, just about the only Logo programme for which I had any real enthusiasm.  I'll be buying the DVD, just as soon as it is available...

I'm like a superhero, with no powers or motivation...

Seriously

Letting this show die is a huge error on Logo's part. It has a great cast, the feedback I've heard about Season 1 was almost all positive, and it was one of the only things on Logo that several straight folks I know have watched. I would think there'd be a bit more effort to work the financials out on all sides for a project of this quality. Apparently the only type of shows  Logo is interested in nurturing are cheap reality shows, which is very short-sighted and a disservice to the community. I hope Del Shores is pursuing other avenues - maybe Here!TV would be more open to the idea of working together with him to get a good scripted comedy into their lineup.

Truly Dissapointing!

This show is fantastic.  Fantastic writing, fantastic acting, and a truly original series.

I have written Logo and have BEGGED it stays on!

I guess Logo needs...

...that half hour to show more stale episodes of coming out stories, or wisecracks.  Lame.  What's left on Logo that's worth watching??

reality tv & Logo

It's funny that Logo is focusing more and more on reality shows, when that's the one area of "mainstream" TV programming where gays and lesbians already have a strong presence (Amazing Race, Survivor, Big Brother, anything on Bravo, etc.), instead of offering original scripted programming by and about gay people.  For the price of acquiring "The Sarah Silverman Program," Logo could have developed and nurtured numerous scripted shows, acquired (or produced) original movies, or at least come up with reality shows that are interesting and uniquely targeted to our community.

If you could suggest programming for Logo, what would it be?

of course!

1 of the 2 shows i actually enjoy on logo gets cancelled... is rick and steve next?

i actually just moved and my cable provider doesn't have logo... but now i'm not to worried about trying to get them to add it. i mean most everyhting else on the channel is either 10 years old or just repeats from sister stations. Sordid lives was the beacon of hope

looks like even on logo the gays can only get second stringers, such a shame.

and no offense to afterelton, but i love how logo is doing nothing wrong in your version of the story when all the other versions i have read online specifically state that residuals from the airing of the show on logo haven't been paid... interesting isn't it?
