Breakfast with Scot

Has anyone elso seen the Canadaian movie "Breakfast with Scot"?  I just watched it the other night and it was a very touching movie.  It stars Tom Cavanagh (Ed) in a role that's far from his usual nice-guy characters.  In fact he plays a character that's hard to like most of the time.  Anyway, he was wonderful and the young boy who played Scot was fantastic.

Hooray for my local cable provder for having a whole Pride Week movie section, where I found this movie.  I might not have had the chance to see it otherewise.

It's quite nice, but

I much prefer a similarly-themed film released aournd the same time called Ready? OK! about a boy determined to be a cheerleader on an all-girls cheerleading team.

So glad we're seeing more stories about gay pre-teens these days.

I love Breakfast with Scot

I thought the film was really adorable, nice to see a movie where yes, it is gay themed, but it's more about them being a family then anything. And I was so proud of my Toronto Maple Leafs and the NHL for giving the movie permission to use the team logo!

It's based on a book by Michael Downing, which is really fantastic. I even emailed him to tell him that and was so surprised that he responded.

I interviewed director Laurie Lynd about the film for a school project, and he had a lot of great things to say about what it means to be gay, especially in the world of sports.

So yeah, great film, go read the book, you'll love it.

While I haven't had a chance to see the film yet, I know that the screenplay was written by Sean Reycraft, a former writer on DEGRASSI: The Next Generation, which I'm happy to see made the list of Top Reasons to Love Canada...

I'd also like to throw in a great band from Vancouver called Spirit of the West who hit it big with "Venice is Sinking" in the early 90s.  Not sure if any of the members are gay (I don't believe so), but one of their songs, "Take it From the Source" touches on the issue of human/gay rights and has always struck a chord with me:

I was sitting in Basil's with a friend and coffee
thinking the world a fine place to be
when the man on my right got up to leave
and left a little piece of his mind with me

He said, "Faggots like you should be put in asylums"
now tell me, who takes the blame
for his being scared, so unaware
that he would fire his fear without an ounce of shame

excellent film

I watched Breakfast With Scot for the first time last night and thought it was fantastic. I love films about hockey so I was glad when someone finally made a gay interest film about hockey (I say film because Degrassi already covered tv, Darco FTW!). Tom Cavanagh (Eric) and Noah Bernett (Scot) worked terrific together.

And if it's even possible, I love the Leafs even more (don't worry Leafs, we'll get em next season)
