Massive spoilers about the last two episodes of Torchwood Children of the EarthSeveral people got their DVD early and posted what happen in the last two episodes.
BIG SPOILERS!! STOP READING IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW! AND IF YOU DO READ, DON"T GIVE ANYTHInG AWAY IN YOUR COMMENT SUBJECT LIVE
During the episode, Ianto is killed. "They send a man into the tank in a hazmat suit with a camera. Its revealed that one of the children from 1965 is in the tank with the 456 still young and hooked up to the alien, the children are like drugs to them, in 1965 they gave them the children in exchange for an antidote to a virus that the 456 caused. The 456 send out a signal that kills Clem. The politicians decide to offer them a smaller number of children than 10% made up of asylum seekers and the like but the 456 refuse. So they put in plans to give them the 10%. Toechwood try and stop it with the help of Lois. Jack and Ianto go to see the 456 and tell it that earth won't give in and that they will fight so the 456 locks everyone in the builing and releases poison gas. Mr Dekker surives by using a hazmat suit. It kills Ianto and Jack though. Gwens goes to see their bodies and Jack wakes up. He's taken to prison and Gwen goes to inform Ianto's family. The politicians decide to go ahead with their plan of taking low acheiving children. They are using the excuse of an incocculation and are going to say that the 456 double crossed them when they go missing. Gwen and Rhys try to help Ianto's sister hide kids. The prime minister informs Mr Frobosher that to show the public they're sending their children away too his daughter will be taken. Mr Frobisher goes home with a gun and kills his family and then himeself (off screeen we just hear the shots). Alice convinces Johnson that Jack can stop this so the break him out. They come up with a plan to use the frequency the 456 used to kill clem to kill the 456 back. For the plan to work though they need to use the children and the child at the centre will die. Steven is the only child near and with no other choice Jack uses him. He's killed but so are the 456. The end is set 6 months later Gwen and Rhys go to meet Jack on a hill and give him his vortex maipulator which survived the blast he sends a signal into space and is teleported away he needs to travel for a while" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0485301/board/thread/142349857?p=1 Ok what happen they going to explore Jack and Ianto relationship. I feel we have all been misled by all the interviews they gave from John Barrowman to RTD saying Jack/Ianto "love story." And after Ianto death, Jack only mention him when he talk about all the people he lost so their relationship is really not explore. The only relationship they really explore and got the most screentime is Gwen/Rhys. Jack/Ianto didn't get a fraction of their screentime. Why am I not suprise, the straight one over the gay one. Sorry for the rant. Submitted by bth (51 points) (17 posts) on Thu, 2009-07-09 15:17. |

What is this?!...I'm being punk'd, right?
The ONLY way this could conceivably be possible is if RTD knew they were going to pull the, "Jack-goes-te-the-Doctor-and-finds-a-way-to-reverse-it" scenario in season four. Otherwise, I'm gonna have to pack some serious heat and go all postal during the TW panel at Comic Con.
Come on, where's the camera?...there's got to be a camera here somewhere. Someone is laughing behind a one way mirror...something.
why him?
sobs sobs sobs sobs sobs
wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
anyone but Ianto? and Jack didn't even say I love you back? He was off with him all season?
I can't get my head around it
I love you
torchwood spoilers
Maybe too detailed spoilers for episode 4
He didn't say I love you and that kind of sucked, but I think he did show Ianto that he loved him. He was willing to back up from the fight with the 456, not for all the people caught in the building but for Ianto. When Jack said "Not him!", I thought well, he does love the boy.
And then he's just heartbroken, crying and begging Ianto to stay with him, and Ianto's convinced he'll be forgotten but Jack reassures him, he could never forget him.
I'm angry that RTD did this, but it was well done and all of the scenes with Jack and Iantoin episode 4 were very "couple", IMO.
From Ianto running to Jack when he gets shot (just like in EoD), to Ianto getting Jack to open up about what happened (about his family), pushing Jack with his unwavering faith in him to get a grip and fight. The look Jack gives Ianto then is wonderful. And off they go together to fight, and they totally failed, but they were so fierce and cool and so much like equals standing there side by side, facing a terrible enemy. and it was utterly beautiful.
I think I'm going to cry again.
of course....
of course Ianto dies....Gwen is the favorite...the meredith Grey of this show....
whatever writers
Russell T Davies
spoilers
brings up possibilities though
1) Ianto becomes immortal.
2) not "really" dead & ready to make surprise return to save the day. Someone revives him (& becomes new TW medic) or he 'recovers on own
3) is dead but Jack'll revive him [3a see #1]
4) is dead along with this series as I won't be watching.
#Ianto on Twitter is for people looking to protest/comment. & there's lots posts there already.
All sound plausible.
I still hope for the highly unlikely chance he's somehow a time lord and that pocket watch was a chameleon arch.
Either way, he was the reason I watched the show so if he's gone for good, they lost a viewer.

Janto in Series 4...
I was one of the lucky few who got to watch the final two episodes and boy was I angry! I am still not over Owen and Tosh's death and then this...IHow can RTD do this to us. I was so invested in Janto and was very upset at what happened. But like brenrose and Nina said maybe Jack will go back intime and rescue Ianto. f that does happen Torchwood will be dead to me forever
Ianto is a trending topic on Twitter
Series 4
Is the Gwen show? Jack is gone, Ianto is dead, along with Tosh and Owen. So that leaves Gwen. Gwen the character who was probably the LEAST liked. I won't be watching series 4, let Torchwood die because they killed off the best character with Ianto.
Oh, and what's with all the darkness. Can't we have hope, some light? Seriously, children dying on this show, beloved characters dying. This isn't what I want, I want everyone to live, and a happy ending. If being an show for grown ups means it's going to have stuff like this, all darkness and horror, I'll stick with Doctor Who only.
I am so pissed at RTD and
I am so pissed at RTD and the BBC for this. Janto was the best thing in it and now they have gone and ruined it completely. And what disgusts me more is the fact that RTD is gay and yet he still conformed to traditional stereo types. He keeps the straight couple and kills off the gay one. Well Done RTD. You have just killed your own show and lost the respect of so many fans.
I have started a petition if any of you want to sign it and tell RTD and the BBC where to put themselves.
http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/janto#signpetition
Would love to here from you all, feel free to send it to others if you so wish.
I am never watching TW or any of RTD programs again after this.
Pardon?
You mean instead of giving a great twist to the story he has to keep the gay boy alive cause... well... hes gay?
That makes no sense, He owes us a great TV show and not a obligation to keep the gays in the show alive no matter what.
Your reasoning is flawed
Is this really necessary?
Well I totally got spoiled.
I've been watching the UK feed (the US won't even get to see series 3 until next week or something)
Someone left a comment called "JANTO" and I just clicked it.
I wish y'all had waited to post this until the end of the week AFTER the show had finished.
I know you have a right to post whatever you want but now it's ruined the rest of the week for me.
We only get 5 damn episodes.
I just saw "janto" in the comments and didn't even see the title before I started reading.
Sigh...
"That's our job today: to control the extent to which people can publicly manifest antigay sentiment." (Bayard Rustin) ** "Heterosexuality is not normal, it's just common" (Dorothy Parker)
The thing about spoilers is
Sorry about that. I've been warning people about spoilers.
Not Your Fault Michael
I've been watching the UK feed as well.
That's why I got so mad. I was just about to sit down to watch tonights episode.
The problem was I just clicked on the "Comments" which don't take you to the top of the page (if you understand what I mean) so I just started reading the comment before I realized what the thread was about.
I didn't mean to be pissy, it was just like getting sucker punched because I try so hard to avoid spoilers about certain things (sometimes I know it's unavoidable)
Anyway, here I go I guess at least now I'll be less "shocked"...
"That's our job today: to control the extent to which people can publicly manifest antigay sentiment." (Bayard Rustin) ** "Heterosexuality is not normal, it's just common" (Dorothy Parker)
I still feel bad. Nothing like having a show
It's big news
I know what you mean and you're right in terms of drama.
But this is like someone you love has died and you've just been gut-punched. You feel so angry and depressed that you just want to share the misery around.
The Jack/Ianto relationship was something special in sci-fi - but also in drama. And it's been sacrificed on the altar of sensationalism without ever being properly explored. This feels like such a Mel Gibson-esque 'kill-the-queer' plot twist that I can't believe it. It's a cop-out on creativity and it's a cop-out on new directions in drama.
I understand what you mean about spoilers, but if you'd just been as hurt as the the British viewers have been, you'd scream the frakking place down to express your pain.
I know death is never nice, but I feel so betrayed by this storyline on so many different levels. Frankly, if I had Russell T Davies in front of me right now, I'd have to be restrained to prevent me from kicking his frakking head in. He just can't use ground-breaking gay relationships to make a point about sexuality, only to simply dismiss them to make a weak point elsewhere about Jack and his immortality. That's not good drama and it's actually weak tragedy.
It's like all this money and all this creativity has been expended to shut down the series. Seriously, I don't see how it can come back from this.
Maybe it's because John
Maybe it's because John Barrowman wanted out. They can't kill Jack off because he's immortal and they couldn't just have the character leave without a good reason. Ianto dying is a good reason for Jack to leave Torchwood. It's sad though, because Ianto was the best character on the show, I liked him better than Jack really. Anyway, I'm thinking this is how Torchwood comes to an end.
Personally speaking, i think
Personally speaking, i think John wanted to do season 3 and was really excited about it but i think when he found out what was going to happen, i think then he wanted out. John liked Janto and thought it was a good thing for Jack. I do get the feeling that John and RTD have had a falling out because of what both of them have been saying. RTD was happy with season 3 and wanted to continue to season 4 and John has been more, i think it is unfair and wrong and with what happens, the show would end. Which, to be honest for a lot of us fans, it is over.
From what John has been saying recently, i don't think he wants to do season 4 if there would be one. I think he wasn't happy with what happens and he wants out. But that is just what i think.
Of course he can
Use the "ground-breaking gay relationships to make a point about sexuality, only to simply dismiss them to make a weak point elsewhere about Jack and his immortality" its his invention so he can use it anyway he likes and is under no obligation to anyone to justify it.
Although I loved Ianto and would like for him to come back it some plot twist, I also loved the fact he went the way he did, I did not see that coming! And the fact that the relationship was not wrapped up in a neat little package made it all the more heart breakingly interesting.
Jack is alone, he always will be alone.
Torchwood spoiler - Well, umm, no
Ultimately, it's a collaborative effort. If he's shutting down Torchwood, then he's done so following discussion with producers and commissioning editors and, presumably, writers, actors and directors. Also, the programme is an income-earner for the BBC and this is likely to effect that. Frankly, if all these spoilers result in the destruction of Torchwood's ratings on BBC America, then good!
Ultimately, the biggest collaboration Davies has is with his audience.
To go down the route of 'Jack is alone, he always will be alone' is a creative cop-out. Davies has already done that with the Doctor - and in Doctor Who, the point has been made consistently that Jack Harkness is a very human chancer, he's not a Time Lord. Also, in Doctor Who the companions have been treated so much better. Rose went off to live with her Doctor, Martha got married and promotion, Donna lived with amnesia. I reiterate, this is a Mel Gibson move of 'kill the queer'. The straights live, the gays die.
Davis has betrayed his audience and, frankly, I hope his audience return the favour.
[Please note: although the word 'frakking' has been used in my post above 'It's big news', that's an editorial intervention. Until today, I have never once written or uttered the word 'frakking'. Instead, I have relied on its Anglo-Saxon alternative 'fucking' or the Irish 'facking', both of which have served me well over the years and are the correct representation of my country's culture.]
But he is
Alone, He becomes "the face of bo" in the future, We are told the torchwood employees do not live very long due to the nature of the work, Apart from Jack that is who cannot die. And he hardly ever sees his daughter and grandson because of how painfull it is never to grow old like they do.
It seems the mother of his child lived a fairly long life but thats not the norm for TW.
Owen died and he was not gay, Everyone is dispensible apart from Jack and wether the series continues and he gets a girlfriend well thats the nature of Jack and I do not understand why that would be a problem, I watched it for the story and not the social commentary.
Glad I never started watching this show
Well this is certainly disappointing!
There go my plans to watch it and to buy the Blu-Ray!
I had my suspicions based on some of the interview remarks about the ending being "open", but I had hoped it was just paranoia.
Maybe RTD was taking the "It's My World and I can destroy it!" mentality? Regardless, it is very upsetting.
Same here.
There go my plans to watch it and to buy the Blu-Ray!
Yeah, I'm pretty much done with this show now.
same
but I've left my pre-order in. Gareth deserves that much.
I'm upset that they never once said the movie was the series ender - because it is. I'm used to British shows and their short life-span of about5 years. Some American show go on far too long. But Torchwoodshould have been able to make it to 5 years easily and through, what Ican only assume, is incompetence it's dead.
...sorry, still in the anger stage of grief here. :-}
Yes, he does
Gareth deserves that much.
Yes he does. I think the whole reason why I liked Ianto so much was because Gareth really brought Ianto to life with his layered performances.I hope that Gareth gets more acting work soon.
Some American show go on far too long.
Yeah, CSI been on for how long now.
But Torchwoodshould have been able to make it to 5 years easily and through, what Ican only assume, is incompetence it's dead.
Well from what I've heard, RTD might do a fourth series depeneding on how good the ratings for series 3 are, but I think that Torchwood as we knew it is dead. If anything, I'd be very weary about getting attached to any of the characters on New!Torchwood.
i have to say that it is an
torchwood spoilers - big ones
I watched the fourth episode, I'm still crying, calm down a bit and start crying again.
I had already read spoilers about Ianto's death late last year, but I was hoping. Most of all I was hoping that if they were going to develop the Jack/Ianto relationship, RTD wouldn't do what he did.
But he did it. He added another one to the old trope: Bury Your Gays.
They told the audience "that's the gay" several times through the first episodes, then dropped heavy anvils, including making Lois the perfect replacement for him.
They packed all the development they didn't give us before in a few minutes, Jack shown his feelings for Ianto. Real feelings. It was beautifully done, but I can't help feeling it was too late, just too late. Ultimately, Ianto's death was pointless, he was being brave and he was the one who made Jack pull himself together and go to stand up to the bad guys, but it wasn't necessary.
Maybe tomorrow I see things in a better light, right now I'm heartbroken a character I adored was killed, an angry that once again the message is only straight couples are allowed love and happiness.
Hey, What's the Big Surprise?
The Gwen show
Like I said over on the mini recap thread it's turned into the Gwen Show. It's what they always wanted it to be. I can't stand the character of Gwen and she's everywhere! She's on more covers of the Torchwood magazine then Jack (and really isn't Torchwood all about Jack?), she's in more promo pics for the show, and she's the main character in whole series.
As for John Barrowman wanting out of the show, no way. This show was made for him because of his character. He's said that he liked to do more Torchwood as long as he can. But what they can be doing is making it so he (Jack) goes back to Doctor Who. Jack is going to be in at least one of the DW special's this year (from pictures I've seen). So maybe this is a way to being him back to where Jack started...with The Doctor.
the Gwen show
It is what they always wanted. They have it now more than ever before, and not it's a huge ratings success too.
I knew I wasn't going to like this new "high profile" Torchwood when we were inundated with promo pics of Gwen, far more than there was of Jack. I felt a little pissed off that the Jack/Ianto promo pics were never posted on the official website, they were only meant for the gay oriented magazines.
This Torchwood has very little to do with Torchwood, I know a lot of people here didn't like it the wacky, dark, yet deeply touching Torchwood of all, but I loved it. CoE is a good show, but it's not Torchwood. The team are not even at the center of the story, that's reserved for the politicians (and it's well done too), but there's not enough of Torchwood team, and mostly when it's about them it's about Gwen and her husband. Gwen suddenly becoming Lara Croft, becoming super savvy with computers, even giving them tips for stealing things (as if Jack hadn't done any of that before!).
So there it is, a high profile show popular with mainstream audiences, with the good looking lady in the leading role, who has a lovely husband and who almost every male in sight gets the hots for, and best of all, it's now completely de-gayed. Clean and safe for the big audiences.
Good for them! And for the people who think fans opinion counts, it really really doesn't. If people liked CoE, and they did, and BBC has the money for it, it'll get another series, and it'll probably get good ratings too. A portion of the old viewers were never comfortable with Jack being in a relationship with another man, and the new viewers, well, RTD makek sure we get very little of Ianto in CoE, I doubt they will miss him.
I was reading the DigitalSpy forum, and there was one very telling post, someone was saying how their viewing of Ianto's death scene was ruined for them by their parents laughing and chanting "Die already!". I thought it was quite telling, as was a quick look at other forums, the homophobes are delighted, it's like Christmas came early for them this year.
Popular or not, it's over for me. I don't care what people say, Day 4 was the last Torchwood for me, and I won't buy the DVDs, or any other of the merchandising. I hadn't pre-ordered because I had read the spoilers and wanted to see how things turned out.
The audiobook read by Gareth David-Lloyd was my only concesion (sp?), because I had loved his reading of Lovecraft and MR James' stories
Looks like
Day Five [SPOILERS]
Haven't brought myself to watch it yet, but I read about it.
I can't decide whether or not to watch it.... sounds fucking awful, but possibly brilliantly creative.
Oh,and the heterosexuals get a happy ending. Imagine that. >:(

Torchwood Day Five [spoilers!]
Good writing, good acting, but I thought they'd bring Ianto back... Not so. With Ianto/Janto gone, I will never watch a Torchwood episode again. Hate sci-fi anyway.
CRAP!

Can't believe it
The acting was incredible, moving, touching, strong and wonderfully emotional. I cried, something I rarely do while watching a show or movie, and desperately hoped they'd bring Ianto back. What now? Without Ianto/Jack "Torchwood" isn't the same anymore. It was what made it special for me. It was what made a difference by showing a strong relationship and love between two men in a fascinating genre show. I loved the way the worked together, side by side.
I was so tired of Rhys interrupting and being annoying (he stole some possibly great moments with his damn food) and hoped for Jack/Ianto to have more scenes, more screentime.
Why the hell did they think killing of a favorite character would be a good idea?
I'm so disappointed and sad. Really. Sorry, I just had to say this.
episode five spoilers
Ianto loses his life.
Jack loses absolutely everything.
Gwen loses... not even her make up.
Maybe it's supposed to be
Maybe it's supposed to be the end of "Torchwood". The Hub is destroyed, Ianto dead, no new members recruited, Jack leaves with nothing left on earth to return back to (OK, his daughter, perhaps). Gwen happily pregnant. Perhaps RTD really intended to kill this wonderful series and I don't get why.
I haven't seen many good promo pics of Jack and Ianto (just annoying Gwen everywhere). Can you perhaps point me to the right direction? I'd really appreciate it. Need something to cheer me up after this.
I think all the promo pics
Thanks so much, Sarah! I

I can't believe that they'd
I can't believe that they'd kill off Ianto. Why is TV always killing off the characters I love the most, first Grey's George now Ianto. I haven't watched CofE yet as it hasn't aired here. I don't think I will now. Such disappointing news. Yes, working in Torchwood is dangerous business. I was sad that Owen and Tosh died, more sad about Tosh since Owen literally was a dead man walking anyway. But killing Ianto is overkill. Plus the Ianto/Jack relationship was what I've been looking forward to seeing, and it's awful that the only character out of the Torchwood team - Owen, Tosh, Ianto, and Jack - who has it all is Gwen?! What a waste. She should have been the first person they killed off.
Maybe this is a way to end the show but why end it with such little pay off for characters and couples that viewers have become invested in?
found this
