Likely Virginia Attorney General openly homophobicRepublican Attorney General candidate Kenneth Cuccinelli recently told the editorial board of the Virginian Pilot that it's "appropriate" to formulate public policy on the premise that homosexuals engage in behavior that is "intrinsically wrong" and offensive to "natural law." He also told the editorial board that homosexual acts are "intrinsically wrong. And I think in a natural law-based country it's appropriate to have policies that reflect that. . . . They don't comport with natural law. I happen to think that it represents (to put it politely; I need my thesaurus to be polite) behavior that is not healthy to an individual and in aggregate is not healthy to society." He also declined to say that he would follow in the footsteps of former GOP Atty General (and current GOP gubernatorial candidate) Bob McDonnell in following a nondiscrimination policy against gays and lesbians in the workplace. Cuccinelli was called out by the Washington Post in one of the harshest editorials I've ever seen against a candidate by calling him a "bigot" and said that he would be an embarrassment to the state of Virginia if elected. (To their credit, the editorial board at the Virginian-Pilot said many of the same things that the Washington Post said, and also said that Cuccinnelli was more fit for reality television rather than politics) Unfortunately, Cuccinelli is likely to be the next Attorney General of Virginia barring a massive upset by the Democratic candidate, Steve Shannon next Tuesday. Cuccinelli leads in all of the polls by anywhere from high single digits to double digits. Here's a link to the comments by Kenneth Cuccinelli and the editorial by the Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/10/29/AR2009102904197.html?nav=hcmoduletmv Submitted by karin1492 (380 points) (81 posts) on Sun, 2009-11-01 02:14. |

this would give me just one more reason to hate
this would give me just one more reason to hate Virginia. i really need to move.
*sigh*
Can I move with you?
Without even commenting on the bigot running for Attorney General (aside from saying I'm not going to comment on him :p), the Gubernatorial election isn't looking good for us. McDonnell (the Republican candidate, and front runner in the gubernatorial election) opposed Governor Kaine's nondiscrimination policy to ban
bias against gays in state hiring and employment. In his thesis he wrote "Man's basic nature is inclined towards evil, and when the exercise of liberty takes the shape of pornography, drug abuse, or homosexuality, the government must restrain, punish, and deter."
Virginia as a state...
...is openly homophobic. Their ban on same-sex marriage is possibly the broadest in the nation, denying not only marriage equality but anything that confers the benefits of marriage such as civil unions or domestic partnerships. Polls of their voter base generally show that people there support these anti-gay measures. So while this is unfortunate it's also demonstrative of why a candidate like Cuccinelli is likely to win. It's even more unfortunate because it sends a pretty clear message that LGBT folks cannot expect what few rights they have in Virginia to be defended.
